Softening of dd excitation in the resonant inelastic x-ray scattering spectra as a signature of Hund's coupling in nickelates

We investigate the effects of Hund's coupling on the resonant x-ray absorption spectra of the recently discovered family of layered nickelate superconductors. We contrast two scenarios depending on the relative strength of the ratio of the effective Hund's coupling ( J H ) to the crystal fields ( Δ ) in these systems. We carry out the cluster and DFT + DMFT simulations of the RIXS signal at the Ni L edge for different values of Hund's coupling. We find the latter dominates for the parent compound while the former becomes important for sufficiently large doping. Our results are consistent with the observations of a softening of a RIXS peak as a function of doping by Rossi [], only when the Hund coupling is sizable. To interpret the results, we separate the theoretical RIXS signal into spin conserving and nonspin conserving channels and conclude that the infinite layer nickelates are in a regime where Δ and J compete effectively and suggest further experimental tests of the theory. ComDMFT v.2.0: Fully self-consistent ab initio GW+EDMFT for the electronic structure of correlated quantum materials

ComDMFT is a parallel computational package designed to study the electronic structure of correlated quantum materials from first principles. Our approach is based on the combination of first-principles methods and dynamical mean field theories. In version 2.0, we implemented fully-diagrammatic GW+EDMFT from first-principles self-consistently. In this approach, correlated electrons are treated within full GW+EDMFT and the rest are treated within full-GW, seamlessly. Further, this implementation enables the electronic structure calculation of quantum materials with weak, intermediate, and strong electron correlation without prior knowledge of the degree of electron correlation.

Vacancy-Induced Tunable Kondo Effect in Twisted Bilayer Graphene

In single sheets of graphene, vacancy-induced states have been shown to host an effective spin-1/2 hole that can be Kondo screened at low temperatures. Here, we show how these vacancy-induced impurity states survive in twisted bilayer graphene (TBG), which thus provides a tunable system to probe the critical destruction of the Kondo effect in pseudogap hosts. Ab initio calculations and atomic-scale modeling are used to determine the nature of the vacancy states in the vicinity of the magic angle in TBG, demonstrating that the vacancy can be treated as a quantum impurity. Utilizing this insight, we construct an Anderson impurity model with a TBG host that we solve using the numerical renormalization group combined with the kernel polynomial method. We determine the phase diagram of the model and show how there is a strict dichotomy between vacancies in the AA/BB versus AB/BA tunneling regions. In AB/BA vacancies, the Kondo temperature at the magic angle develops a broad distribution with a tail to vanishing temperatures due to multifractal wave functions at the magic angle. Finally, we argue that scanning tunneling microscopy in the vicinity of the vacancy can act as a probe of both the critical single-particle states and the underlying many-body ground state in magic-angle TBG.

Charge self-consistent density functional theory plus ghost rotationally invariant slave-boson theory for correlated materials

We present a charge self-consistent density functional theory combined with the ghost rotationally invariant slave-boson (DFT+gRISB) formalism for studying correlated materials. Here, this method is applied to SrVO 3 and NiO, representing prototypical correlated metals and charge-transfer insulators. For SrVO 3 , we demonstrate that DFT+gRISB yields an accurate equilibrium volume and effective mass close to experimentally observed values. Regarding NiO, DFT+gRISB enables the simultaneous description of charge-transfer and Mott-Hubbard bands, significantly enhancing the accuracy of the original DFT+RISB approach. Furthermore, the calculated equilibrium volume and spectral function reasonably agree with experimental observations.

Infinite-layer nickelates as Ni-e $g$ Hund’s metals

The recent and exciting discovery of superconductivity in the hole-doped infinite-layer nickelate Nd 1-$δ$ Sr $δ$ NiO 2 draws strong attention to correlated quantum materials. From a theoretical viewpoint, this class of unconventional superconducting materials provides an opportunity to unveil a physics hidden in correlated quantum materials. Here we study the temperature and doping dependence of the local spectrum as well as the charge, spin and orbital susceptibilities from first principles. By using ab initio LQSGW+DMFT methodology, we show that onsite Hund’s coupling in Ni-$d$ orbitals gives rise to multiple signatures of Hund’s metallic phase in Ni-e $g$ orbitals. The proposed picture of the nickelates as an e $g$ (two orbital) Hund’s metal differs from the picture of the Fe-based superconductors as a five orbital Hund’s metal as well as the picture of the cuprates as doped charge transfer insulators. Our finding uncovers a new class of the Hund’s metals and has potential implications for the broad range of correlated two orbital systems away from half-filling.

Tetragonal Kondo Insulator EuCd 2 Sb 2 Discovered via High Pressure High Temperature Synthesis

Abstract Magnetic and electronic properties of quantum materials heavily rely on the crystal structure even in the same chemical compositions. In this study, it is demonstrated that a layered tetragonal EuCd 2 Sb 2 structure can be obtained by treating bulk trigonal EuCd 2 Sb 2 under high pressure (6 GPa) and high temperature (600 °C). Magnetization measurements of the newly formed layered tetragonal EuCd 2 Sb 2 confirm an antiferromagnetic ordering with Neel temperature ( T N ) around 16 K, which is significantly higher than that ( T N ≈ 7 K) of trigonal EuCd 2 Sb 2 , consistent with heat capacity measurements. Moreover, bad metal behavior is observed in the temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity and the resistivity shows a dramatic increase around the Neel temperature. Electronic structure calculations with local density approximation dynamic mean–field theory (LDA+DMFT) show that this material is strongly correlated with well‐formed large magnetic moments, due to Hund's coupling, which is known to dramatically suppress the Kondo scale.

Mn(Pt 1–x Pd x ) 5 P: Isovalent tuning of Mn-sublattice magnetic order

Here, e report the growth and characterization of MnPd 5 P, a rare-earth-free ferromagnet, with T C ≈ 295 K and planar anisotropy, and conduct a substitutional study with its antiferromagnetic analogue MnPt 5 P. We provide a solution route to grow large single crystals of MnPd 5 P and the series Mn(Pt 1–x Pd x ) 5 P by adding Mn into Pd-P and (Pt 1–x Pd x )-P based melts. All compounds in the family adopt the layered anti-CeCoIn5 type structure with the space group P4/mmm, and EDS and X-ray diffraction results indicate that MnPt 5 P and MnPd 5 P form a complete solid solution. Based on measurements of the temperature- and field-dependent magnetization and resistance, we construct a temperature-composition (T-x) phase diagram for Mn(Pt 1–x Pd x ) 5 P and demonstrate that the initial antiferromagnetic order found in MnPt 5 P is extraordinarily sensitive to Pd substitution. At low Pd fractions (x < 0.010), the single antiferromagnetic transition in pure MnPt 5 P splits into a higher temperature ferromagnetic transition followed first, upon cooling, by a lower temperature ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic transition and then by a re-entrant antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic transition at even lower temperatures. The antiferromagnetic region makes up a bubble phase that persists up to x ≈ 0.008-0.009 for T ≈ 150 K, with all samples x < 0.008 recovering their initial ferromagnetic state upon further cooling to base temperature. Over the same low substitution range we find a non-monotonic change in the room temperature value of the unit cell volume, further suggesting that pure MnPt 5 P is very close to an instability. Once x > 0.010, Mn(Pt 1–x Pd x ) 5 P undergoes a only single transition into the ferromagnetic phase. The Curie temperature initially increases rapidly with x, rising from T C ≈ 197 K at x = 0.013 to a maximum of T C ≈ 312 K for x ≈ 0.62, and then falling back to T C ≈ 295 K for pure MnPd 5 P (x = 1.00). Given that Pt and Pd are isoelectronic, this work raises questions as to the origin of the extreme sensitivity of the magnetic ground state in MnPt 5 P upon introducing Pd.

Accuracy of ghost rotationally invariant slave-boson and dynamical mean field theory as a function of the impurity-model bath size

Here, we compare the accuracy of the ghost rotationally invariant slave-boson (g-RISB) theory and dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) on the single-band Hubbard model, as a function of the number of bath sites in the embedding impurity Hamiltonian. Our benchmark calculations confirm that the accuracy of g-RISB can be systematically improved by increasing the number of bath sites, similar to DMFT. With a few bath sites, we observe that g-RISB is systematically more accurate than DMFT for the ground-state observables. On the other hand, the relative accuracy of these methods is generally comparable for the quasiparticle weight and the spectral function. As expected, we observe that g-RISB satisfies the variational principle in infinite dimensions, as the total energy decreases monotonically towards the exact value as a function of the number of bath sites, suggesting that the g-RISB wave function may approach the exact ground state in infinite dimensions. Our results suggest that the g-RISB is a promising method for first-principles simulations of strongly correlated matter, which can capture the behavior of both static and dynamical observables, at a relatively low computational cost.

Is the Orbital-Selective Mott Phase Stable against Interorbital Hopping?

The localization-delocalization transition is at the heart of strong correlation physics. Recently, there is great interest in multiorbital systems where this transition can be restricted to certain orbitals, leading to an orbital-selective Mott phase (OSMP). Theoretically, the OSMP is widely studied for kinetically decoupled orbitals, but the effect of interorbital hopping remains unclear. Here, we show how nonlocal interorbital hopping leads to local hybridization in single-site dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). Under fairly general circumstances, this implies that, at zero temperature, the OSMP, involving the Mott-insulating state of one orbital, is unstable against interorbital hopping to a different, metallic orbital. We further show that the coherence scale below which all electrons are itinerant is very small and gets exponentially suppressed even if the interorbital hopping is not overly small. Within this framework, the OSMP with interorbital hopping may thus reach down to extremely low temperatures T, but not to T = 0. Accordingly, it is part of a coherence-incoherence crossover and not a quantum critical point. Finally, we present analytical arguments supported by numerical results using the numerical renormalization group as a DMFT impurity solver. We also compare our findings with previous slave-spin studies.
