Reversible Iron Oxyfluoride (FeOF)–Graphene Composites as Sustainable Cathodes for High Energy Density Lithium Batteries

Two large barriers are impeding the wide implementation of electric vehicles, namely driving-range and cost, primarily due to the low specific energy and high cost of mono-valence cathodes used in lithium-ion batteries. Iron is the ideal element for cathode materials considering its abundance, low cost and toxicity. However, the poor reversibility of (de)lithiation and low electronic conductivity prevent iron-based high specific energy multi-valence conversion cathodes from practical applications. In this work, a sustainable FeOF nanocomposite is developed with extraordinary performance. The specific capacity and energy reach 621 mAh g –1 and 1124 Wh kg –1 with more than 100 cycles, which triples the specific capacity, and doubles the specific energy of current mono-valence intercalation LiCoO 2 . This is the result of an effective approach, combing the nanostructured FeOF with graphene, realized by making the (de)lithiation reversible by immobilizing FeOF nanoparticles and the discharge products over the graphene surface and providing the interparticle electric conduction. Importantly, it demonstrates that introducing small amount of graphene can create new materials with desired properties, opening a new avenue for altering the (de)lithiation process. Finally, such extraordinary performance represents a significant breakthrough in developing sustainable conversion materials, eventually overcoming the driving range and cost barriers.

Probing of Local Structure in Laves Compound TbFe 2

Abstract The Laves compounds Tb 1‐x Dy x Fe 2 have attracted much interest due to the giant magnetostriction effect appearing at their morphotropic phase boundary compositions. Although previous studies have established the relationship between the average structure and magnetostrictive properties in these compounds, there is a lack of characterization of their local structures. In this paper, as a first step toward this goal, the evolution of the local structure of the terminal compound (TbFe 2 ) of this system is reported, in an attempt to provide useful information about interatomic bonding in this system. The pair distribution function (PDF) results suggest that the compound presents the rhombohedral local crystal symmetry. The lattice at the local scale shows abnormal thermal expansion which is different from the long scale structure. The different role of the Tb─Fe bond and Fe─Fe bond in affecting the crystal lattice is revealed. These findings highlight the important role of local structure in determining the magnetostrictive properties of the Laves compounds.

Amorphization mechanism of SrIrO 3 electrocatalyst: How oxygen redox initiates ionic diffusion and structural reorganization

The use of renewable electricity to prepare materials and fuels from abundant molecules offers a tantalizing opportunity to address concerns over energy and materials sustainability. The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is integral to nearly all material and fuel electrosyntheses. However, very little is known about the structural evolution of the OER electrocatalyst, especially the amorphous layer that forms from the crystalline structure. Here, we investigate the interfacial transformation of the SrIrO 3 OER electrocatalyst. The SrIrO 3 amorphization is initiated by the lattice oxygen redox, a step that allows Sr 2+ to diffuse and O 2− to reorganize the SrIrO 3 structure. This activation turns SrIrO 3 into a highly disordered Ir octahedral network with Ir square-planar motif. The final Sr y IrO x exhibits a greater degree of disorder than IrO x made from other processing methods. Our results demonstrate that the structural reorganization facilitated by coupled ionic diffusions is essential to the disordered structure of the SrIrO 3 electrocatalyst.

Magnetic transitions and magnetocaloric effect of Gd 4 Nd 1 Si 2 Ge 2

In this work, crystal structure and magnetic properties of the quaternary Gd 4 Nd 1 Si 2 Ge 2 compound were investigated using synchrotron X-ray diffraction and magnetic measurements. The compound crystallized into an orthorhombic structure in the temperature range 200-300 K. In zero field cooling, the compound undergoes a spin reorientation following a ferromagnetic-like transition at 276 K. The spin reorientation is hinted at by nonlinear changes of lattice parameters but is suppressed in a high magnetic field of 6 T. Magnetic measurements revealed a magnetocaloric effect with a high relative cooling power. It is suggested that Nd substitution for Gd enlarges magnetic anisotropy and induces a canted spin structure.
