Application of Flex-QA Arrays in HTS Magnet Testing

Flexible PCB quench antennas have been very useful in providing high-quality high-resolution data in low temperature superconducting magnet tests. Similar multi-sensor arrays have been employed recently to cover a high temperature superconductor magnet tested at FNAL. In the present work, data taking conditions and magnet features to support the analysis framework are discussed. Then observations made during complete magnet powering cycles are described and analysis of quench antenna data are presented. Based on results, improvements to instrumentation and data taking are debated. Views on the future of flexible quench antenna sensors for HTS magnet diagnostics and operational support are shared.

First results of AUP Nb3Sn quadrupole horizontal tests

The Large Hadron Collider will soon undergo an upgrade to increase its luminosity by a factor of ~10 [1]. A crucial part of this upgrade will be replacement of the NbTi focusing magnets with Nb3Sn magnets that achieve a ~50% increase in the field strength. This will be the first ever large-scale implementation of Nb3Sn magnets in a particle accelerator. The High-Luminosity LHC Upgrade, HL-LHC is a CERN project with a world-wide collaboration. It is under construction and utilizes Nb3Sn Magnets (named MQXF) as key ingredients to increase tenfold the integrated luminosity delivered to the CMS and ATLAS experiments in the next decade. The HL-LHC AUP is the US effort to contribute approximately 50% of the low-beta focusing magnets and crab cavities for the HL-LHC. This paper will present the program to fabricate the Nb3Sn superconducting magnets. We are reporting the status of the HL-LHC AUP project present the results from horizontal tests of the first fully assembled cryo-assembly.

Development and Test of a Large-aperture Nb3Sn Cos-theta Dipole Coil with Stress Management

The design concept of the Electron Ion Collider (EIC), which is under construction at BNL, considers adding a 2nd Interaction Region (IR) and detector to the machine after completion of the present EIC project. Recent progress with development and fabrication of large-aperture high-field magnets based on the Nb3Sn technology for the HL-LHC makes this technology interesting for the 2nd EIC IR. This paper summarizes the results of feasibility studies of large-aperture high-field Nb3Sn dipoles and quadrupoles for the 2nd EIC IR.

Bi-Filar Coil Winding for Fast Quench Protection

As superconducting magnet technology is pushed towards higher performance, energy density and total stored energy follow exponentially. Protecting magnets becomes substantially more challenging with traditional methods being stretched to their limits. New technologies such as CLIQ promise to provide a robust method to protect advanced magnets, however they become inductance limited in large magnet strings or at low field, leading to more complex configurations. A technique to substantially reduce this limitation and improve response time is presented, by winding a coil in a bifilar fashion. This allows for extremely high di/dt. The concept is then demonstrated on a small REBCO coil.

Interlaminar Fracture Toughness Testing of Nb3Sn Insulation Systems

Epoxy cracking has been the main suspected contributor to training in Nb3Sn magnets for some time, as it leads to energy release and magnet quenching. Cracking in a superconducting composite can occur from several modes, and the likelihood of these modes is not well understood. Failure has been observed between insulation systems and the superconducting cable itself rather than within the cable or insulation. To target the behavior at the interface, samples have been fabricated and tested for mode I fracture toughness in an adapted version of ASTM D5528. This work seeks to better characterize the fracture toughness of this interface to better understand how to model and design insulation systems.
