Today’s Energy Challenges, Tomorrow’s Solutions: Circular Economy: Designing to Reduce, Reuse, and Upcycle

Transitioning to a Circular Economy the days of creating, using, and disposing of materials are rapidly coming to a close. This linear economy is not only inefficient and unsustainable, but the scarcity of resources we ultimately will face will make it impossible to maintain. That's why NREL is dedicating resources to research that will underpin a circular economy - designing materials with reducing, reusing, and upcycling in mind for energy-relevant and energy-intensive materials, processes, and technologies. This effort will help mitigate supply issues, promote upcycling, reduce waste, and add value to end-of-life products.

Today's Energy Challenges, Tomorrow's Solutions: Integrated Energy Pathways: Modernizing Our Energy Systems

Integrated Energy Pathways Today's electric grid was built for century-old needs, not the needs of tomorrow's emerging system. As the cost of generating electricity falls, products and systems that previously operated on other types of fuels are becoming increasingly "electrified." Instead of a one-way flow of electricity to systems that operate independently from one another, we are seeing more bi-directional connectivity between the grid and multiple end points. Integrated Energy Systems require a fundamental rethinking of grid infrastructure and the path electricity takes from the source of generation to the end point of use. Inevitably, the way the grid is managed today won't be the way it is managed 10-15 years from now. NREL is pioneering the fundamental research needed to guide this transition through renewable energy fuels and low-carbon electricity generation. Working with industry partners, we can collaboratively develop a fresh approach to energy generation, security, resilience, and advanced mobility.

Today's Energy Challenges, Tomorrow's Solutions: Electrons to Molecules: Building a New Foundation for Industrial Processes

The vast majority of global goods and materials we use on a daily basis are manufactured from fossil fuel precursors - chemical building blocks strung together using combinations of heat, pressure, and chemical catalysis. NREL, along with energy industry partners, is exploring the use of renewable, affordable electricity as the driving force for the conversion of low-energy molecules - such as water and carbon dioxide (CO2) - to generate other molecules that could be used as chemicals, materials, fuels, or energy storage.Through this research, NREL and its partners are working together to determine the most efficient and cost-effective solutions for energy storage as well as safer ways to create chemicals and plastics that do not rely solely on fossil fuels.

FY20 NREL Overview: Transforming Energy

At the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), we are transforming today’s energy challenges into tomorrow’s solutions. Our scientific research and technological innovation will shape a highly efficient and resilient energy future. Our world is transforming around us with energy solutions becoming cleaner, cheaper, renewable, and more resilient. As the population grows and new technologies and devices are added to the grid, we must examine the effects and enhance security within our most critical systems. As environmental threats expand and human demands on urban centers increase, we need more sustainable and efficient ways of generating energy that considers resource competition worldwide. We need our grid to be adaptive, autonomous, and responsive. NREL continues to anticipate these challenges, offering solutions through research, innovation, analysis, partners, and people. We are building the foundation of tomorrow’s energy landscape and inspiring the economic growth of the future.
