Contamination Control in Our Solar UV Sounding Rocket Projects: CLASP/CLASP2

In the CLASP / CLASP2 experiments, the contamination control was conducted mainly for the purpose of preventing molecular contamination. In particular, the organic contamination was successfully prevented. However, in the CLASP observation, the Lyα intensity decreased due to water molecules. Thus, we obtained the importance to evaluate the influence of molecules that can be easily removed and to quantitatively evaluate the vent path during the flight.

Wave-Front Error Measurements and Alignment of CLASP2 Telescope with a Dual-Band Pass Cold Mirror Coated Primary Mirror

"Chromospheric LAyer Spectro-Polarimeter (CLASP2)" is the next sounding rocket experiment of the "Chromospheric Lyman-Alpha Spectro-Polarimeter (CLASP)" that succeeded in observing for the first time the linear polarization spectra in the hydrogen Lyman- line (121.6 nm) and is scheduled to be launched in 2019. In CLASP2, we will carry out full Stokes-vector spectropolarimetric observations in the Mg II h & k lines near 280 nm with the spectro-polarimeter (SP), while imaging observations in the Lyman- line will be conducted with the slitjaw optics (SJ). For the wavelength selection of CLASP2, the primary mirror of the telescope uses a new dual-band pass cold mirror coating targeting both at 121.6 nm and 280 nm. Therefore, we have to perform again the alignment of the telescope after the installation of the recoated primary mirror. Before unmounting the primary mirror from the telescope structure, we measured the wave-front error (WFE) of the telescope. The measured WFE map was consistent with what we had before the CLASP flight, clearly indicating that the telescope alignment has been maintained even after the flight. After the re-coated primary mirror was installed the WFE was measured, and coma aberration was found to be larger. Finally, the secondary mirror shim adjustments were carried out based on the WFE measurements. In CLASP2 telescope, we improved a fitting method of WFE map (applying 8th terms circular Zernike polynomial tting instead of 37th terms circular Zernike fitting) and the improved method enables to achieve better performance than CLASP telescope. Indeed, WFE map obtained after the final shim adjustment indicated that the required specification (< 5:5 m RMS spot radius) that is more stringent than CLASP telescope was met.

Si III OV Bright Line of Scattering Polarized Light That Has Been Observed in the CLASP and Its Center-to-Limb Variation

The CLASP (Chromospheric Lyman-Alpha Spectro- Polarimeter) rocket experiment, in addition to the ultraviolet region of the Ly alpha emission line (121.57 nm), emission lines of Si III (120.65 nm) and OV (121.83 nm) is can be observed. These are optically thin line compared to a Ly alpha line, if Rarere captured its polarization, there is a possibility that dripping even a new physical diagnosis chromosphere-transition layer. In particular, OV bright light is a release from the transition layer, further, three P one to one S(sub 0) is a forbidden line (cross-triplet transition between lines), it was not quite know whether to polarization.

Measurements of the Magnetic Field of the Upper Chromosphere with Polarimetry

A major remaining challenge for heliophysics is to decipher the magnetic structure of the chromosphere. The chromosphere is the critical interface between the Sun's photosphere and corona: it contains more mass than the entire interplanetary heliosphere, requires a heating rate that is larger than that of the corona, and mediates all the energy driving the solar wind, solar atmospheric heating and solar eruptions. While measurements of the magnetic field in the photosphere are routine, the chromosphere poses several extra challenges. The magnetically sensitive lines formed in the upper chromosphere are in the ultraviolet, so space-based observations are required. The lines are often formed over a range of heights, sampling different plasma which complicates the inversion process. These lines are sensitive to the magnetic field via polarized light that is created or modified through the Hanle and Zeeman effects. There are a few observations of these lines, and a significant challenge remains in extracting the magnetic field from the polarization measurements, as detailed model atmospheres with advanced radiative transfer physics are needed. Real progress is obtained by a simultaneous improvement in both the observational side and the modeling side. We present information on the CLASP (Chromospheric LAyer Spectro-Polarimeter) sounding rocket program, and future prospects for these types of measurements.

Chromospheric LAyer SpectroPolarimeter (CLASP2)

The sounding rocket Chromospheric Lyman-Alpha SpectroPolarimeter (CLASP) was launched on September 3rd, 2015, and successfully detected (with a polarization accuracy of 0.1 %) the linear polarization signals (Stokes Q and U) that scattering processes were predicted to produce in the hydrogen Lyman-alpha line (Ly; 121.567 nm). Via the Hanle effect, this unique data set may provide novel information about the magnetic structure and energetics in the upper solar chromosphere. The CLASP instrument was safely recovered without any damage and we have recently proposed to dedicate its second ight to observe the four Stokes profiles in the spectral region of the Mg II h and k lines around 280 nm; in these lines the polarization signals result from scattering processes and the Hanle and Zeeman effects. Here we describe the modifications needed to develop this new instrument called the "Chromospheric LAyer SpectroPolarimeter" (CLASP2).

Solar Lyman-Alpha Polarization Observation of the Chromosphere and Transition Region by the Sounding Rocket Experiment CLASP

We are planning an international rocket experiment Chromospheric Lyman-Alpha Spectro-Polarimeter (CLASP) is (2015 planned) that Lyman α line (Ly(alpha) line) polarization spectroscopic observations from the sun. The purpose of this experiment, detected with high accuracy of the linear polarization of the Ly(alpha) lines to 0.1% by using a Hanle effect is to measure the magnetic field of the chromosphere-transition layer directly. For polarization photometric accuracy achieved that approx. 0.1% required for CLASP, it is necessary to realize the monitoring device with a high throughput. On the other hand, Ly(alpha) line (vacuum ultraviolet rays) have a sensitive characteristics that is absorbed by the material. We therefore set the optical system of the reflection system (transmission only the wavelength plate), each of the mirrors, subjected to high efficiency of the multilayer coating in accordance with the role. Primary mirror diameter of CLASP is about 30 cm, the amount of heat about 30,000 J is about 5 minutes of observation time is coming mainly in the visible light to the telescope. In addition, total flux of the sun visible light overwhelmingly large and about 200 000 times the Ly(alpha) line wavelength region. Therefore, in terms of thermal management and 0.1% of the photometric measurement accuracy achieved telescope, elimination of the visible light is essential. We therefore, has a high reflectivity (> 50%) in Lyα line, visible light is a multilayer coating be kept to a low reflectance (<5%) (cold mirror coating) was applied to the primary mirror. On the other hand, the efficiency of the polarization analyzer required chromospheric magnetic field measurement (the amount of light) Conventional (magnesium fluoride has long been known as a material for vacuum ultraviolet (MgF2) manufactured ellipsometer; Rs = 22%) about increased to 2.5 times were high efficiency reflective polarizing element analysis. This device, Bridou et al. (2011) is proposed "that is coated with a thin film of the substrate MgF2 and SiO2 fused silica." As a result of the measurement, Rs = 54.5%, to achieve a Rp = 0.3%, high efficiency, of course, capable of taking out only about s-polarized light. Other reflective optical elements (the secondary mirror, the diffraction gratingcollector mirror), subjected to high-reflection coating of Al + MgF2 (reflectance of about 80%), less than 5% in the entire optical system by these (CCD Science was achieved a high throughput as a device for a vacuum ultraviolet ray of the entire system less than 5% (CCD of QE is not included).

Simulation and Measurement of Stray Light in the CLASP

We are planning an international rocket experiment Chromospheric Lyman-Alpha Spectro-Polarimeter (CLASP) is (2015 planned) that Lyman Alpha line polarization spectroscopic observations from the sun. The purpose of this experiment, detected with high accuracy of the linear polarization of the Ly􀉲 lines to 0.1% by using a Hanle effect is to measure the magnetic field of the chromosphere-transition layer directly. For total flux of the sun visible light overwhelmingly larger and about 200 000 times the Ly􀉲 line wavelength region, also hinder to 0.1% of the polarization photometric accuracy achieved in the stray light of slight visible light. Therefore we were first carried out using the illumination design analysis software called stray light simulation CLASP Light Tools. Feature of this simulation, using optical design file (ZEMAX format) and structural design file (STEP format), to reproduce realistic CLASP as possible to calculate machine is that it was stray study. And, at the stage in the actual equipment that made the provisional set of CLASP, actually put sunlight into CLASP using coelostat of National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, was subjected to measurement of stray light (San test). Pattern was not observed in the simulation is observed in the stray light measurement results need arise that measures. However, thanks to the stray light measurement and simulation was performed by adding, it was found this pattern is due to the diffracted light at the slit. Currently, the simulation results is where you have taken steps to reference. In this presentation, we report the stray light simulation and stray light measurement results that we have implemented

Chromosphere, the transition layer of the sun is a region to switch to the magnetic pressure dominated from plasma pressure dominated, simultaneous observation of the detailed magnetic field measurement and plasma of dynamic phenomenon here is what is the frontier of the next solar physics. As This is a challenge that has just mentioned, even the next solar observation satellite plan SOLAR-C, in the experiments we had used a NASA sounding rocket for the first time in the SOLAR-C plan, will address the chromosphere-transition layer magnetic field measurement there. It is, is a Chromospheric Lyman-Alpha Spectro-Polarimeter (CLASP) plan, the linear polarization of Lyman 􀉲 emission lines chromosphere-transition layer shoots (121.6nm) were detected in 0.1 percent of high accuracy, a new technique called Hanre effect I get the magnetic field information of chromosphere-transition layer. In Japan, the US and Europe joint observation in November 2012 as a rocket experiment is adopted to NASA this plan that full-scale start-up, start from assembly work is 2014 spring flight observation device, currently, it is where the alignment of the optical elements have been implemented. After this, it is planned to continue with the performance evaluation towards the observation implementation of summer 2015. In addition to once again explain the contents of the plan In this presentation, we report an overview of the entire development and preparation current status.
