High Fidelity Computational Model for Fluidized Bed Experiments (Final Report)

MFiX was integrated with preconditioners and linear solver packages in Trilinos via MFIX, Fortran, C, and C++ wrappers. The MFIX wrapper interpreted the structure of the matrix and vector from MFiX while the Fortran wrapper transfers this information to a low-level language, C. C-wrapper transforms the memory semantic between Fortran and C++ language. C++ wrapper passes the matrix and vector to a Trilinos package and gets the solution. This solution was transferred to MFiX via C++, C, Fortran, MFIX wrapper. The framework is used to integrate first, second and third generation linear solvers in Trilinos with MFiX.

Data Assimilation Enhancements to Air Force Weather’s Land Information System

The United States Air Force (USAF) has a proud and storied tradition of enabling significant advancements in the area of characterizing and modeling land state information. 557th Weather Wing (557 WW; DoD’s Executive Agent for Land Information) provides routine geospatial intelligence information to warfighters, planners, and decision makers at all echelons and services of the U.S. military, government and intelligence community. 557 WW and its predecessors have been home to the DoD’s only operational regional and global land data analysis systems since January 1958. As a trusted partner since 2005, Air Force Weather (AFW) has relied on the Hydrological Sciences Laboratory at NASA/GSFC to lead the interagency scientific collaboration known as the Land Information System (LIS). LIS is an advanced software framework for high performance land surface modeling and data assimilation of geospatial intelligence (GEOINT) information.

Gravitational instability of a rotating partially-ionized plasma carrying a uniform magnetic field with Hall effect

The problem of gravitational instability of an infinite homogeneous self-gravitating medium carrying a uniform magnetic field in the presence of Hall effect has been investigated to include the effect due to rotation. The dispersion relation has been obtained. It has been found that the Jeans's criterion for the instability remains unaffected even when the effect due to rotation is considered in the presence of Hall effect carrying a uniform magnetic.

Imaging of molecular hydrogen and oxygen by single and two-photon fluorescence using laser and flashlamp sources

Two flow visualization techniques, i.e., simultaneous two-dimensional fluorescence imaging of H2 and O2 in a diffusion flame, and quasi-linear fluorescence imaging of O2, are presented. The first uses an injection-locked argon-fluoride excimer laser and a partial overlap of a two-photon ground state absorption in H2 with a single photon absorption from a vibrational level in O2. The second uses a simple, high-intensity ultraviolet flashlamp which provides a flux of photons in the 180-195 nm range, sufficient to produce a quasi-one-dimensional fluorescence image of hot/room temperature oxygen. Both techniques do not require that a seed material be introduced into the flow, they can image major flow constituents, and provide an instantaneous snapshot of the flow.
