Parameter identifiability under approximation

The problem of injectivity of the parameter-to-state map is discussed for Galerkin approximations of a linear parabolic equation. A necessary and sufficient condition is derived and illustrated by means of simple examples. Finally, output least squares identifiability of the Galerkin approximations is discussed.

The linear regulator problem for parabolic systems

The paper presents an approximation framework for computation (in finite dimensional spaces) of Riccati operators that can be guaranteed to converge to the Ricccati operator in feedback controls for abstract evolution systems in a Hilbert space. It is shown how these results may be used in the linear optimal regulator problem for a large class of parabolic systems.

Parameter estimation for the Euler-Bernoulli-beam

An approximation involving cubic spline functions for parameter estimation problems in the Euler-Bernoulli-beam equation (phrased as an optimization problem with respect to the parameters) is described and convergence is proved. The resulting algorithm was implemented and several of the test examples are documented. It is observed that the use of penalty terms in the cost functional can improve the rate of convergence.

The linear regulator problem for parabolic systems

An approximation framework is presented for computation (in finite imensional spaces) of Riccati operators that can be guaranteed to converge to the Riccati operator in feedback controls for abstract evolution systems in a Hilbert space. It is shown how these results may be used in the linear optimal regulator problem for a large class of parabolic systems.

Cubic spline approximation techniques for parameter estimation in distributed systems

Approximation schemes employing cubic splines in the context of a linear semigroup framework are developed for both parabolic and hyperbolic second-order partial differential equation parameter estimation problems. Convergence results are established for problems with linear and nonlinear systems, and a summary of numerical experiments with the techniques proposed is given.

Approximation of feedback controls for parabolic systems

An approximation framework is presented for computation (in finite dimensional spaces) of Riccati operators that can be guaranteed to converge to the Riccati operator in feedback controls for abstract evolution systems in a Hilbert space. It is indicated how these results may be used in the linear optimal regulator problem for a large class of parabolic systems.

An approximation theory for nonlinear partial differential equations with applications to identification and control

Approximation results from linear semigroup theory are used to develop a general framework for convergence of approximation schemes in parameter estimation and optimal control problems for nonlinear partial differential equations. These ideas are used to establish theoretical convergence results for parameter identification using modal (eigenfunction) approximation techniques. Results from numerical investigations of these schemes for both hyperbolic and parabolic systems are given.
