Ambipolar Electrochemistry of Pre‐Intercalated Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene in Ionic Liquid Electrolyte

Abstract Cation intercalation with or without redox remains the dominant charge storage mechanism for two‐dimensional (2D) Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene. Anion‐based charge storage remains unexplored due to intrinsic negative surface charge of MXenes preventing spontaneous intercalation of anions and irreversible oxidation of Ti at anodic potentials in aqueous electrolytes. In this work, we report on the ambipolar electrochemical behavior of the Ti 3 C 2 T x in ionic liquid electrolyte over a 2.5 V electrochemically stable window. The experiments are conducted on a thin Ti 3 C 2 T x film current collector coated with an electroactive layer of small flakes (∼150 nm) of Ti 3 C 2 T x pre‐intercalated with 1‐ethyl‐3‐methylimidazolium bis‐(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)‐imide (EMIM‐TFSI) ionic liquid. Couples of redox peaks with a very small potential separation during the voltage sweep are observed at high negative (−0.75 V vs. Ag wire) and high positive (+0.75 V vs. Ag wire) potentials. Our experimental electrochemical data combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggest feasibility of pseudo‐intercalation of TFSI anions between Ti 3 C 2 T x flakes. This study provides a pathway for elucidating anion intercalation for different MXene chemistries in solvent‐free electrolytes, which can lead to development of MXene based energy storage devices with improved performance.

Effect of pinholes in Nb 4 C 3 MXene sheets on its electrochemical behavior in aqueous electrolytes

Two-dimensional (2D) niobium carbide, Nb 4 C 3 T x (T x : O, OH, and F), a representative member of the 43 MXene structural motif, has shown promising electrochemical performance in acidic electrolytes. The capacitive performance of Nb 4 C 3 T x in neutral aqueous electrolytes has been reported as moderate, but little effort has been made to improve it. In this paper, we report a method to introduce nanopores (pinholes) in Nb 4 C 3 T x MXene flakes by adjusting the etching time. The pinholes generated during the etching process improve ion diffusion pathways, which are otherwise hindered by the restacking of the 2D flakes. The “holey Nb 4 C 3 T x ” shows a 50 % improved rate capability at charge/discharge time scales of 1–2 s in 1 M Li 2 SO 4 , Na 2 SO 4 , and (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 electrolytes. Our strategy of controlling the permeability of Nb 4 C 3 T x sheets can potentially be applied to other MXenes, providing guidance for improving the capacitance and rate capability of 2D materials.

Tunable electrochromic behavior of titanium-based MXenes

Two-dimensional transition metal carbides, nitrides and carbonitrides, popular by the name MXenes, are a promising class of materials as they exhibit intriguing optical, optoelectronic and electrochemical properties. Taking advantage of their metallic conductivity and hydrophilicity, titanium carbide MXenes (Ti 3 C 2 T x and others) are used to fabricate solution processable transparent conducting electrodes (TCEs) for the design of three-electrode electrochromic cells. However, the tunable electrochromic behavior of various titanium-based MXene compositions across the entire visible spectrum has not yet been demonstrated. Here, we investigate the intrinsic electrochromic properties of titanium-based MXenes, Ti 3 C 2 T x , Ti 3 CNT x , Ti 2 CT x , and Ti 1.6 Nb 0.4 CT x , where individual MXenes serve as a transparent conducting, electrochromic, and plasmonic material layer. Plasmonic extinction bands for Ti 3 C 2 T x , Ti 2 CT x and Ti 1.6 Nb 0.4 CT x are centered at 800, 550 and 480 nm, which are electrochemically tunable to 630, 470 and 410 nm, respectively, whereas Ti 3 CNT x shows a reversible change in transmittance in the wide visible range. Additionally, the switching rates of MXene electrodes with no additional transparent conductor electrodes are estimated and correlated with the respective electrical figure of merit values. This work demonstrates that MXene-based electrochromic cells are tunable in the entire visible spectrum and suggests the potential of the MXene family of materials in optoelectronic, plasmonic, and photonic applications, such as tunable visible optical filters and modulators, to name a few.
