Dispersion of stored energy within a battery system at risk of failure

A method and system for dispersing stored energy in an energy storage system to delay or arrest propagation of thermal runaway and thermally-induced cascading failures. The system includes a plurality of battery sub-assemblies and DC-DC converters connected to a shared DC bus through which energy may be exchanged. The system may be interfaced to an AC power grid or DC power system through an additional power converter. The method of dispersing stored energy uses this system to charge and discharge sub-assemblies such that the system is less susceptible to propagation of thermal runaway. The method determines, based on awareness of current system state, battery types, and electrical and thermal structure, the sequence of charging and discharging actions to best inhibit thermal runaway while preserving the system's ability to perform subsequent energy redistribution.

A Comprehensive Numerical and Experimental Study for the Passive Thermal Management in Battery Modules and Packs

Cooling plates in battery packs of electric vehicles play critical roles in passive thermal management systems to reduce risks of catastrophic thermal runaway. In this work, a series of numerical simulations and experiments are carried out to unveil the role of cooling plates (both between cells and a bottom plate parallel to the cell stack) on the thermal behavior of battery modules and packs under nail penetrations. First, we investigated the role of side cooling plates on the thermal runaway propagation mitigation in battery modules (1S3P) and packs (3S3P) by varying the key parameters of the side cooling plates, such as plate thicknesses, thermal contact resistances, and materials. Then, three important factors for passive thermal management systems are identified: (i) thermal mass of side cooling plates, (ii) interfacial thermal contact resistances, and (iii) the effective heat transfer coefficients at exterior surfaces. The roles of bottom cooling plates on thermal runaway propagation mitigation in 1S3P and 1S5P battery modules are numerically investigated by comparing the thermal behavior of the modules with only side cooling plates and with both side and bottom cooling plates.

Support Vector Machines for Estimating Decision Boundaries with Numerical Simulations

Many engineering design problems can be formulated as decisions between two possible options. This is the case, for example, when a quantity of interest must be maintained below or above some threshold. The threshold thereby determines which input parameters lead to which option, and creates a boundary between the two options known as the decision boundary. This report details a machine learning approach for estimating decision boundaries, based on support vector machines (SVMs), that is amenable to large scale computational simulations. Because it is computationally expensive to evaluate each training sample, the approach iteratively estimates the decision boundary in a manner that requires relatively few training samples to glean useful estimates. The approach is then demonstrated on three example problems from structural mechanics and heat transport.
