Demonstrate Viability of Accelerated Fuel Qualification Approaches

This presentation summarizes the research under LDRD grogram, Demonstrate Viability of Accelerated Fuel Qualification Approaches. It is demonstrated that the fabrication process of uranium carbide fuel has been developed and neutronic, thermal and hydraulic analysis have been conducted for the Fission Accelerated Steady-state Testing (FAST). This program provides basis of expansion of FAST as an efficient platform to broad nuclear fuels.

Modeling and Measurement of Axial Gas Transport in Nuclear Fuels

This document is an American Nuclear Society (ANS) transaction for the ANS annual conference. This transaction provides an overview of the Modeling and Measurement of Axial Gas Transport Laboratory Directed Research and Development project including preliminary modeling results. The goal is to provide model for axial gas transport in the Bison Fuel Performance code to support industry's desire to achieve higher burnups in existing light water reactors. A brief overview of the experimental approach and associated modeling activities is presented.

Spark plasma sintered, MoNbTi-based multi-principal element alloys with Cr, V, and Zr

MoNbTi, MoNbTiZr, CrMoNbTiZr, and MoNbTiVZr multi-principal element alloys (MPEAs) were fabricated via spark plasma sintering (SPS) and investigated for use in high-strength applications. The fabrication method by SPS and powder metallurgy differs from those presented in the prior literature, where most MPEAs are fabricated using arc melting (AM) methods. Here cryogenic milling was used to maximize potential defect sinks (grain boundaries) for radiation resistance and to increase ultimate tensile strength through the Hall-Petch effect. SPS was chosen for consolidation in order to maintain a fine-grained structure during densification. Each alloy was characterized using x-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy for phase identification and compositional homogeneity. The base ternary alloy MoNbTi presented a predominantly single BCC system with minor cubic phases. The introduction of additional alloying elements—Zr, V, and Cr—heightened the phase complexity and increased the fractions of a secondary BCC phase and an HCP phase from Zr. The addition of Cr induced a larger fraction of the Laves phase to form. The addition of V caused the precipitation of small Mo inclusions. Thermodynamic analysis was performed to understand the separation of phases in each alloy. Discrepancies among the phase predictions generated by thermodynamic models, phases previously presented in the literature, and the characterization results suggest that MPEA fabrication methods, especially solid-state methods, require significant investigation to ensure that alloys can remain stable throughout their anticipated service lifetimes.

Decoding Early Candidacy of High Entropy Alloys for Nuclear Application using the Advanced Test Reactor through Predictive Methods and Combinatorial Testing

High Entropy Alloys (HEAs) are identified candidates for nuclear applications owing to their superb mechanical and thermal properties. In line with evaluating their candidacy, a challenge remains in their validity as structural replacements for extreme environments. Each compositional graded specimen consists up to four different compositions spanning the fueled zone for non-prototypical neutron irradiation testing in the Advanced Test Reactor (ATR) at Idaho National Laboratory (INL). We have fabricated a set of four compositionally graded specimens using spark plasma sintering that include at least five of the following elements: Cr, C, Al, Zr, Mo, Nb, Ta, V, Ti, W, and Fe. In time for this meeting the role of temperature expected to play a role in-pile cladding chemical interactions (FCCI), mechanical interactions (FCMI), irradiation damage, creep, and resistance will be reported. The irradiated portion has a scheduled irradiation date in April 2020 and with post irradiation examination (PIE) to follow.
