Workshop on Comparison of Data and Derived Dynamical Quantities During Northern Hemisphere (PMP-1) Winters

Atmospheric temperature and geopotential height were compared along with the quantities derived from them for application to stratospheric dynamics. The data for comparison were those gathered from radiosondes and rockets. Data from the Northern Hemisphere winters 1978/79 through 1981/82 were discussed, but most attention was devoted to days during the winter of 1978/79.

PMP-1: A coordinated study of the behavior of the middle atmosphere in winter

The following observations of the middle atmosphere were available regularly: radiosonde data distributed through arrangements made by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO); radiosonde data; and the infrared radiances of the SSU (stratospheric sounding unit onboard the operational NOAA satellites). Other data of more experimental nature which are or will become available are, data from the Nimbus-7 satellite, especially from the Stratosphere and Mesospheric Sounder (SAMS) and the Limb Infrared Monitor of the Stratosphere (LIMS), but only for the winter of 1978 to 1979. These data are collected and integrated into the large-scale meteorological field analysis. Parameters necessary for the understanding of the large-scale dynamics of the middle atmosphere are derived.

The upper atmospheres of the earth and planets; Proceedings of the Topical Meeting, Ottawa, Canada, May 16-June 2, 1982

Various topics concerned with the upper atmosphere of the earth and planets are discussed. The atmospheres of the terrestrial planets are addressed, emphasizing Venus. The energy budget of the mesosphere and thermosphere is considered, discussing current and particles as energy sources, the radiation field, and neutral atmosphere dynamics. The results of Pre-Map Project One are covered, and the International Reference Ionosphere is discussed, including electron density profiles, the lower ionosphere, the plasmasphere, plasma temperature profiles, and ion composition. Finally, the mass spectroscopy of atmospheres is treated.

Examples of synoptic changes in ozone and circulation in the stratosphere

The Backscatter Ultraviolet (BUV) experiment on board the Nimbus 4 polar orbiting satellite has been measuring the total ozone content and high-level atmospheric ozone profiles since early 1970. Synoptic type analyses of these data are now being accomplished and compared with appropriate constant-pressure analyses of stratospheric circulation. Ozone changes during a stratospheric warming of early 1971 are investigated by comparison with circulation changes in the layer between 30 mb (24 km) and 2 mb (42 km). A general increase in ozone concentrations, more pronounced in the higher latitudes, is noted during the warming period. Plans for future investigation are discussed, including analysis of ozone observations beginning from 1970 on every two-day basis for comparison with constant-pressure height, temperature, and wind charts analyzed with the aid of radiosonde, rocketsonde, and satellite data.
