Virtual Anodes in Ion Beam Emissions in Space: Numerical Simulations

From introduction: Many space experiments and applications involve plasma beam emissions. For instance, electron and ion beam experiments have been conducted to study beam-plasma interactions, neutralization processes, spacecraft charging and discharge, etc. This paper is concerned with the physics of ion beam emissions from spacecraft to aq low density space plasma. The emphasis is on space charge effects.

Numerical Simulations of Virtual Anodes in Ion Beams Emissions in Space

Standard theories have shown that when the current density in a one-dimensional electron or ion beam exceeds a critical value, a potential hump will show up. This hump will behave as a virtual electrode to the beam particles. Measurements have demonstrated the existence of virtual cathodes and anodes. Results are presented of particle-in-cell simulations of ion beam emissions in space.

Spacecraft charging during ion beam emissions in sunlight

During ion beam emissions from the SCATHA satellite, the potential of the negatively charged satellite body shows a sinusoidal oscillation frequency of once-per-spin of the satellite. The minimum occurs when the ion beam is sunward. The processes that may be responsible for the voltage modulation are considered. Neutralization of ion beam space charge by photoelectrons is examined. The photoelectrons are accelerated by the negative potential of the satellite. Effects of electron impact ionization, excitation of metastable states, and photoionization of xenon neutral atoms in the ion beam are studied in detail. Critical ionization velocity interaction is unlikely under the condition considered.

Boom potential of a rotating satellite in sunlight

An interpretation is provided for the behavior of long boom potential measurements taken on the spinning P78-2 (SCATHA) satellite at near geosynchronous altitudes. This study uses data taken during a quiet day, with the satellite in sunlight. The data show periodic variations with a maximum amplitude of 6 V. The theory explains why the variations correlate well with sun direction but not with the geomagnetic field. A current balance model, assuming a Maxwellian distribution of photoelectrons, is studied. The photoelectron temperature, the degrees of positive charging of the boom and of the satellite, and the ambient electron flux are calculated. Deviations from the model are discussed.

Sheath ionization model of beam emissions from large spacecraft

An analytical model of the charging of a spacecraft emitting electron and ion beams has been applied to the case of large spacecraft. In this model, ionization occurs in the sheath due to the return current. Charge neutralization of spherical space charge flow is examined by solving analytical equations numerically. Parametric studies of potential large spacecraft are performed. As in the case of small spacecraft, the ions created in the sheath by the returning current play a large role in determining spacecraft potential.
