Results are presented on the development of two coronal mass ejections (CMEs) obtained by comparing the observations of the large angle spectroscopic coronagraph (LASCO) and the extreme ultraviolet imaging telescope (EIT) instrument onboard the SOHO with those of the Nancay radioheliograph. The radioheliograph provides images at five levels in the corona. An excellent spatial association is found between the position and extent of the type 4 radio sources and the CMEs seen by LASCO. One result is the existence for these two events of discrete successive phases in their development. For these events, Ulysses and SOHO missions measured interplanetary particles of coronal origin. The coronal acceleration site was attempted to be identified, as well as the path of these particles from the corona to the interplanetary medium.
The solar observations from GOES-8, the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO), and the Yohkoh satellite concerning the events of the X-class flare are discussed. The Michelson Doppler imager (MDI) magnetometer shows a new region of magnetic activity in AR 7978. The rapid development and evolution of this region is shown by the MDI and the extreme-ultraviolet Doppler telescope (EDT) data. The coronal mass ejections (CMEs) observed using coronagraphs are presented. The possible association between the CME and the X-flare is considered.
The Halley Optical Probe Experiment (HOPE) will furnish in situ photopolarimetric data on Comet Halley's coma dust cloud and atmosphere. The optical probe concept involves measurements of the polarized spectral radiance in the direction of motion at two points on the spacecraft trajectory, parallel to the direction of motion; their difference is the spatial derivative of the radiance along the line-of-sight, as well as of the light scattered by dust or emitted by gas in a tube along the trajectory. HOPE is proposed for the Giotto spacecraft's flyby of Comet Halley.
