Comparing first-principles density functionals plus corrections for the lattice dynamics of YBa 2 Cu 3 O 6

The enigmatic mechanism underlying unconventional high-temperature superconductivity, especially the role of lattice dynamics, has remained a subject of debate. Theoretical insights have long been hindered due to the lack of an accurate first-principles description of the lattice dynamics of cuprates. Recently, using the r2SCAN meta-generalized gradient approximation (meta-GGA) functional, we have been able to achieve accurate phonon spectra of an insulating cuprate YBa 2 Cu 3 O 6 and discover significant magnetoelastic coupling in experimentally interesting Cu–O bond stretching optical modes [Ning et al., Phys. Rev. B 107, 045126 (2023)]. We extend this work by comparing Perdew–Burke–Ernzerhof and r2SCAN performances with corrections from the on-site Hubbard U and the D4 van der Waals (vdW) methods, aiming at further understanding on both the materials science side and the density functional side. We demonstrate the importance of vdW and self-interaction corrections for accurate first-principles YBa 2 Cu 3 O 6 lattice dynamics. Since r2SCAN by itself partially accounts for these effects, the good performance of r2SCAN is now more fully explained. Finally, in addition, the performances of the Tao–Mo series of meta-GGAs, which are constructed in a different way from the strongly constrained and appropriately normed (SCAN) meta-GGA and its revised version r2SCAN, are also compared and discussed.

Parameter-free treatment of a layered correlated van der Waals magnet: CrPS 4

The electronic and magnetic structure of CrPS 4 , a two-dimensional (2D) magnetic semiconductor is examined by employing the SCAN meta-GGA density functional. We find the resulting magnetic moment and band gap are in excellent agreement with experiment. From the bulk magnetic configurations, we confirm the experimentally observed A-type antiferromagnetic (A-AFM) ordered ground state with a magnetic moment of 2.78 µ B per chromium atom and band gap of 1.34 eV. To gain insight into the evolution of the ground state with layers, the total energy of each magnetic configuration is calculated for a variety of thicknesses. Monolayer CrPS 4 is predicted to be a ferromagnetic insulator with a band gap of 1.37 eV, and A-AFM for bilayer and trilayer, with band gaps of 1.35 and 1.30 eV, respectively. The electronic structure is reported for the single-, two-, and three-layer and bulk CrPS 4 . Finally, we explore the optical properties of the 2D structure and report the dielectric tensor components and Kerr parameters for the monolayer.

The Hunt for High-Tc Superconductivity: from Discovery to Breakthrough [Slides]

Summary/Outlook: BCS pairing theory of superconductivity is a prototypical example of a condensed matter physics problem. It has inspired the Weinberg Salam model for Electroweak interactions; So far there is no quantitative theory of superconductivity in strongly correlated materials. The limits on Tc are still unknown; Almost all known superconducting materials were found without theoretical guidance; The next-generation of first-principles approaches is beginning to captures a more holistic picture of correlated materials, giving way to a more quantitative theory of materials.

Using Magnetic Proximity Effects to Build Designer Quantum Materials [Slides]

The properties of naturally occurring materials are not necessarily commensurate with those needed for next-generation devices. Counter to conventional thought, we find magnetic proximity effects can be asymmetric. In fact, our experimental data and DFT calculations indicate this effect is universal, with material and heterostructure specificity being vital for predictive modeling. This work suggests routes towards rational design of device component materials via selective control over spin valley states.

Critical role of magnetic moments in the lattice dynamics of YBa 2 Cu 3 O 6

The role of lattice dynamics in unconventional high-temperature superconductivity is still vigorously debated. Theoretical insights into this problem have long been prevented by the absence of an accurate first-principles description of the combined electronic, magnetic, and lattice degrees of freedom. Utilizing the recently constructed r 2 SCAN density functional that stabilizes the antiferromagnetic (AFM) state of the pristine oxide YBa 2 ⁢Cu 3 ⁢O 6 , we faithfully reproduce the experimental dispersion of key phonon modes. Here we further find significant magnetoelastic coupling in numerous high-energy Cu-O bond stretching optical branches, where the AFM results improve over the soft nonmagnetic phonon bands.

Asymmetric magnetic proximity interactions in MoSe 2 /CrBr 3 van der Waals heterostructures

Magnetic proximity interactions between atomically thin semiconductors and two-dimensional magnets provide a means to manipulate spin and valley degrees of freedom in non-magnetic monolayers, without using applied magnetic fields. In such van der Waals heterostructures, magnetic proximity interactions originate in the nanometre-scale coupling between spin-dependent electronic wavefunctions in the two materials, and typically their overall effect is regarded as an effective magnetic field acting on the semiconductor monolayer. Here we demonstrate that magnetic proximity interactions in van der Waals heterostructures can in fact be markedly asymmetric. Valley-resolved reflection spectroscopy of MoSe2/CrBr3 van der Waals structures reveals strikingly different energy shifts in the K and K' valleys of the MoSe2 due to ferromagnetism in the CrBr3 layer. Density functional calculations indicate that valley-asymmetric magnetic proximity interactions depend sensitively on the spin-dependent hybridization of overlapping bands and as such are likely a general feature of hybrid van der Waals structures. Here, these studies suggest routes to control specific spin and valley states in monolayer semiconductors.

Colossal piezoresistance in narrow-gap Eu 5 In 2 Sb 6

Piezoresistance, the change of the electrical resistance (R) of a material in response to an applied mechanical stress (σ), is the driving principle of electromechanical devices such as strain gauges, accelerometers, and cantilever force sensors. Enhanced piezoresistance has been traditionally observed in two classes of uncorrelated materials: nonmagnetic semiconductors and composite structures. In this study, we report the discovery of a remarkably large piezoresistance in Eu 5 In 2 Sb 6 single crystals, wherein anisotropic metallic clusters naturally form within a semiconducting matrix due to electronic interactions. Eu 5 In 2 Sb 6 shows a highly anisotropic piezoresistance, and uniaxial pressure along [001] of only 0.4 GPa leads to a resistivity drop of >99.95%, which results in a colossal piezoresistance factor of 5000×10 –11 Pa –1 . Our result not only reveals the role of interactions and phase separation in the realization of colossal piezoresistance, but it also highlights a route to multifunctional devices with large responses to both pressure and magnetic field.

Acoustic plasmons and conducting carriers in hole-doped cuprate superconductors

The layered crystal structures of cuprates enable collective charge excitations fundamentally different from those of three-dimensional metals. Acoustic plasmons have been observed in electron-doped cuprates by resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS); in contrast, whether acoustic plasmons exist in hole-doped cuprates is under debate, despite extensive measurements. This contrast led us to investigate the charge excitations of hole-doped cuprate La 2-x Sr x CuO 4 . Here we present incidentenergy-dependent RIXS measurements and calculations of collective charge response via the loss function to reconcile the aforementioned issues. Our results provide evidence for the acoustic plasmons of Zhang-Rice singlet (ZRS), which has a character of the Cu 3d x 2 -y 2 strongly hybridised with the O 2p orbitals; the metallic behaviour is implied to result from the movement of ZRS rather than the simple hopping of O 2p holes.

Spin-polarized imaging of strongly interacting fermions in the ferrimagnetic state of the Weyl candidate CeBi

CeBi has an intricate magnetic phase diagram whose fully polarized state has recently been suggested as a Weyl semimetal, though the role of f states in promoting strong interactions has remained elusive. Here we focus on the less-studied but also time-reversal symmetry-breaking ferrimagnetic phase of CeBi, where our density functional theory (DFT) calculations predict additional Weyl nodes near the Fermi level E F . We use spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy to image the surface ferrimagnetic order on the itinerant Bi p states, indicating their orbital hybridization with localized Ce f states. We observe suppression of this spin-polarized signature at E F , coincident with a Fano line shape in the conductance spectra, suggesting the Bi p states partially Kondo screen the f magnetic moments, and this p – f hybridization causes strong Fermi-level band renormalization. Furthermore, the p-band flattening is supported by our quasiparticle interference measurements, which also show band splitting in agreement with DFT, painting a consistent picture of a strongly interacting magnetic Weyl semimetal.

Effect of Dilute Magnetism in a Topological Insulator

Three-dimensional (3D) topological insulator (TI) has emerged as a unique state of quantum matter and generated enormous interests in condensed matter physics. The surfaces of a 3D TI consist of a massless Dirac cone, which is characterized by the Z 2 topological invariant. Introduction of magnetism on the surface of a TI is essential to realize the quantum anomalous Hall effect and other novel magneto-electric phenomena. Here, by using a combination of first-principles calculations, magneto-transport and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), we study the electronic properties of gadolinium (Gd)-doped Sb 2 Te 3 . Our study shows that Gd doped Sb 2 Te 3 is a spin-orbit-induced bulk band-gap material, whose surface is characterized by a single topological surface state. Our results provide a new platform to investigate the interactions between dilute magnetism and topology in magnetic doped topological materials.
