Space Station Spartan study

The required extension, enhancement, and upgrading of the present Spartan concept are described to conduct operations from the space station using the station's unique facilities and operational features. The space station Spartan (3S), the free flyer will be deployed from and returned to the space station and will conduct scientific missions of much longer duration than possible with the current Spartan. The potential benefits of a space station Spartan are enumerated. The objectives of the study are: (1) to develop a credible concept for a space station Spartan; and (2) to determine the associated requirements and interfaces with the space station to help ensure that the 3S can be properly accommodated.

Black Brant X - The low cost development of an advanced sounding rocket system

During the late 1970s it became more and more apparent that an investigation of the regions extending above the earth's dayside polar cusp is very important from a scientific point of view. The feasibility of a mission for implementing such an investigation was studied. It was found that a sounding rocket vehicle having the necessary payload throw capability and the required low trajectory dispersion did not exist within the NASA inventory. It was, therefore, decided to develop a suitable sounding rocket, the Black Brant X (BBX), in a cooperative effort including NASA, the Canadian National Research Council, and a number of aerospace companies. Attention is given to a BBX vehicle description, BBX flight results, and the BBX flight capabilities

Recent sounding rocket highlights and a concept for melding sounding rocket and space shuttle activities

Highlights include launching guided vehicles into the African Solar Eclipse, initiation of development of a Three-Stage Black Brant to explore the dayside polar cusp, large payload Aries Flights at White Sands Missile Range, and an active program with the Orion vehicle family using surplus motors. Sounding rocket philosophy and experience is being applied to the shuttle in a Get Away Special and Experiments of Opportunity Payloads Programs. In addition, an orbit selection and targeting software system to support shuttle pallet mounted experiments is under development.

Console test report for shuttle task 501 shuttle carrier aircraft transceiver console (SED 36115353-301)

Performance tests completed on the Space Shuttle Carrier Aircraft (SCA) transceiver console, verifying its design objectives, were described. These tests included: (1) check of power supply voltages for correct output voltage and energization at the proper point in the turn on sequence, (2) check of cooling system (LRU blower, overload sensors and circuitry, and thermocouple probe), (3) check of control circuits logic, including the provisions for remote control and display, (4) check of the LRU connector for presence of correct voltages and absence of incorrect voltages under both energized and deenergized conditions, and (5) check of the AGC and power output monitor circuits.

Engineering support for the Space Processing Application Rocket /SPAR/ project - Preparation for effective Shuttle utilization

Sounding rockets are being used in the Space Processing Program to develop the scientific, engineering, and management expertise to effectively use the Shuttle. An extensive vehicle selection study was necessary to optimize the payload weight, cost factors, and low-g time. The vehicle and subsystem development for each of the flight vehicles is described along with analyses and programmatic considerations peculiar to the Space Processing Program. Several early Space Processing payloads are described along with available flight results.
