Refractive Index and Abbe Number Tuning via 3D Printable Optical Quality Silica–Titania–Germania Glasses

The development of optical quality GeO 2 –TiO 2 –SiO 2 glasses compatible with direct ink writing (DIW) 3D printing is reported in this study. Colloidal GeO 2 and TiO 2 –SiO 2 core–shell feedstocks are prepared by a sol–gel method and converted to printable inks for DIW. Printed inks are subsequently densified to glass using heat treatment at temperatures up to 1100 °C in air. A series of print‐compatible glass compositions are prepared, yielding transparent glass with the highest refractive index n = 1.576. Herein, it is shown that more TiO 2 can be incorporated into the glass without haziness or scattering through the addition of GeO 2 . The mechanisms for this are discussed, and it is shown that crystallization persists in these glasses despite the lack of visible light scattering. Finally, the combination of both TiO 2 and GeO 2 into a ternary glass also is used to independently tune the dispersion properties of the glass, as demonstrated by measured refractive indices and Abbe numbers, which has potential implications for 3D‐printed optics.

Mass Transport in Binary TiO 2 :SiO 2 and GeO 2 :SiO 2 Direct Ink Write Glasses

The mass transport mechanisms of Ti in TiO 2 :SiO 2 and Ge in GeO 2 :SiO 2 direct ink write, additively manufactured glasses were studied. Due to the low solubility of Ti in SiO2 and high melting point of TiO 2 relative to SiO 2 , Ti transport was found to occur via solid state interdiffusion between adjoining SiO 2 and TiO 2 precursor particles. The diffusivity of titanium in SiO 2 measured over typical sintering temperatures (1000-1300 °C) using Rutherford backscattering spectrometry was D = 9.1 × 10 -7 [m2/sec] exp ($\frac{378[\frac{kJ}{mol}]}{RT}$. This provides an estimate of ~30 nm for the diffusion length under typical sintering conditions (2 hrs. at 1200 °C). Although Ti and Ge have similar diffusivities in SiO 2 glass at low concentrations, GeO 2 was found to be much more mobile during the sintering of printed GeO 2 :SiO 2 green bodies. This was evident in glasses with phase separated GeO 2 regions over length scales of ~10 μm and in experiments involving binary xerogels in which GeO 2 migrated over ~10 μm through cracked, porous SiO 2 layers. Large phase separated regions and long transport lengths in GeO 2 :SiO 2 suggest that the transport of GeO 2 occurs prior to the densification of the SiO 2 matrix via an alternative mechanism such as capillary flow. These results inform important considerations in the design of index modifying inks for the direct ink write process, namely initial precursor phase, mutual solubility with the base SiO 2 glass, and mass transport throughout the sintering process.

Quantized Grain Boundary States Promote Nanoparticle Alignment During Imperfect Oriented Attachment

Oriented attachment (OA) has become a well-recognized mechanism for the growth of metal, ceramic, and biomineral crystals. While many computational and experimental studies of OA have shown that particles can attach with some misorientation then rotate to remove adjoining grain boundaries, the underlying atomistic pathways for this “Imperfect OA” process remain the subject of debate. In this paper, molecular dynamics and in situ TEM were used to probe the crystallographic evolution of up to 30 gold and copper nanoparticles during aggregation. It was found that Imperfect OA occurs because (1) grain boundaries become quantized when their size is comparable to the separation between constituent dislocations and (2) kinetic barriers associated with the glide of grain boundary dislocations are small. In support of these findings, TEM experiments show the formation of a single crystal aggregate after annealing 9 initially misoriented, agglomerated particles with evidence of dislocation slip and twin formation during particle/grain alignment. These observations motivate future work on assembled nanocrystals with tailored defects and call for a revision of Read-Shockley models for grain boundary energies in nanocrystalline materials.
