GOT C+ Survey of [CII] 158 Micrometer Emission: Atomic to Molecular Cloud Transitions in the Inner Galaxy

We present the results of the distribution of CO-dark H2 gas in a sample of 2200 interstellar clouds in the inner Galaxy (l = 90 deg to +57 deg) detected in the velocity resolved [CII] spectra observed in the GOT C+ survey using the Herschel HIFI. We analyze the [CII] intensities along with the ancillary HI, (12)CO and (13)CO data for each cloud to determine their evolutionary state and to derive the H2 column densities in the C(+) and C(+)/CO transition layers in the cloud. We discuss the overall Galactic distribution of the [CII] clouds and their properties as a function Galactic radius. GOT C+ results on the global distribution of [CII] clouds and CO-dark H2 gas traces the FUV and star formation rates in the Galactic disk.

Submillimeter Astronomy Investigation of Line Specra (SAILS) - a balloon borne instrument

The Submillimeter Astronomy Investigation of Line Specra (SAILS) is a balloon-borne experiment under study for a 100 day ultra-long duration balloon mission. The experiment would survey the galactic plane with 1 arc minute angular resolution and 1 km/sec velocity resolution in the important submillimeter lines of CII, NII, and OI.

First astronomical detection of the cumulene carbon chain molecule H2C6 in TMC-1

The cumulene carbenes are important components of hydrocarbon chemistry in low-mass star-forming cores. Here we report the first astronomical detection of the long-chain cumulene carbene H2C6 in the interstellar cloud TMC-1, from observations of two of its rotational transitions: J(K,K') = 7(1,7) --> 6(1,6) at 18.8 GHz and 8(1,8) --> 7(1,7) at 21.5 GHz, using NASA's Deep Space Network 70 m antenna at Goldstone, California. In addition we also observed the shorter cumulene carbene H2C4 at the same position. The fractional abundance of H2C6 relative to H2 is about 4.7 x 10(-11) and that of H2C4 is about 4.1 x 10(-9). The abundance of H2C6 is in fairly good agreement with gas-phase chemical models for young molecular cloud cores, but the abundance of H2C4 is significantly larger than predicted.
