Dynamic crystallization experiments on the Angra dos Reis achondritic meteorite

The types of cooling histories necessary to produce the porphyritic texture and the observed mineral assemblage in Angra dos Reis (ADOR) achondritic meteorite, which, on the basis of its trace element characteristics was considered to be a cumulate with a recrystallized texture, while a recent model suggested that ADOR is a porphyry. Dynamic crystallization experiments were conducted with nucleation conditions varied by melting the starting material at different degrees of superheat. The results show that, at low pressure, a volcanic or hypabyssal history of ADOR is possible. The most likely history involved cooling from a slightly subliquidus temperature with a relatively high and irregular nucleation density resulting in a granular texture with the poikilitic fassaite growing late; accumulation of some crystal is tought to be probable.

Dynamic crystallization characteristics of enstatite chondrite chondrules

Although the chemical properties of enstatite and ordinary chondrites are distinctly different, they both contain chondrules with a similar array of textures. This similarity suggests like origins. Textural studies using chondrule compositions from ordinary chondrites suggest that these chondrules have an igneous origin: either by crystallization from melts or from partial melts of crystalline material. In contrast, the cathodoluminescence (CL) properties of the enstatite from enstatite chondrites were interpreted to mean that mechanical aggregation played an important part in their formation. An alternative interpretation of these CL properties, however, suggests that variations in the minor element content of the enstatite, a probable result of igneous fractionation processes, could also produce different CL colors. An attempt was made to evaluate the two models by performing dynamic crystallization experiments on an average enstatite chondrule composition and by looking at the resultant CL. The textures grown on experimentally crystallized E-chondrite melts confirm that formational processes are similar to those for the ordinary chondrites with the obvious exception of the oxidation state.

Dynamic crystallization study of barred olivine chondrules

The 'classic' barred olivine (BO) texture was defined by Donaldson (1976) as a single-plate dendrite which shares the entire chondrule with the remaining glass or subsequent crystallization products. This paper describes experiments in which BO textures were produced experimentally from two starting compositions: one modeled after the average BO chondrule composition in L-chondrites determined by Weisberg (1987), and the other after an olivine-rich composition (CH-1) studied by Lofgren (1989). It is shown that most of the textural features observed in natural BO chondrules are replicated in the experimentally produced chondrules. Several new constraints on models for the chondrule-forming process are proposed.
