Exceptional magnetic and magnetoelastic behavior of rare-earth non-centrosymmetric Sm 7 Pd 3

Magnetic compounds possessing an intrinsic combination of near-zero magnetization with high magnetic anisotropy are highly desirable for spinronic applications and memory recording. A comprehensive study of Sm 7 Pd 3 binary compound uncovered a unique combination of strong magnetoelastic behavior, very low net magnetization, and exceptionally high magnetic coercivity. The temperature-dependent X-ray synchrotron powder diffraction study indicates the abrupt changes in the compound's lattice parameters at the magnetic ordering temperature of T C =169 K, although the crystal structure remains non-centrosymmetric hexagonal Th 7 Fe 3 -type down to 6 K. Density functional theory calculations confirm high intrinsic magnetocrystalline anisotropy of Sm 7 Pd 3 , which explains the extremely large coercivity of the polycrystalline sample, up to H cr = 130 kOe at 2 K. In conclusion, this discovery brings to life a novel class of highly anisotropic materials that are distinctly different from known spintronic materials, making them interesting future systems for magnetic memory research.

Stabilizing lattice oxygen redox in layered sodium transition metal oxide through spin singlet state

Abstract Reversible lattice oxygen redox reactions offer the potential to enhance energy density and lower battery cathode costs. However, their widespread adoption faces obstacles like substantial voltage hysteresis and poor stability. The current research addresses these challenges by achieving a non-hysteresis, long-term stable oxygen redox reaction in the P3-type Na 2/3 Cu 1/3 Mn 2/3 O 2 . Here we show this is accomplished by forming spin singlet states during charge and discharge. Detailed analysis, including in-situ X-ray diffraction, shows highly reversible structural changes during cycling. In addition, local CuO 6 Jahn-Teller distortions persist throughout, with dynamic Cu-O bond length variations. In-situ hard X-ray absorption and ex-situ soft X-ray absorption study, along with density function theory calculations, reveal two distinct charge compensation mechanisms at approximately 3.66 V and 3.99 V plateaus. Notably, we observe a Zhang-Rice-like singlet state during 3.99 V charging, offering an alternative charge compensation mechanism to stabilize the active oxygen redox reaction.

Thermal cycling induced alteration of the stacking order and spin-flip in the room temperature van der Waals magnet Fe 5 GeTe 2

The magnetic properties of the quasi-two-dimensional van der Waals magnet Fe 5–δ GeTe 2 (F5GT), which has a high ferromagnetic ordering temperature T C ~315 K, remain to be better understood. It has been demonstrated that the magnetization of F5GT is sensitive to both the Fe deficiency δ and the thermal-cycling history. Here, we investigate the structural and magnetic properties of F5GT single crystals with a minimal Fe deficiency (|δ |≤ 0.1), utilizing combined x-ray and neutron scattering techniques. Herein our study reveals that the quenched F5GT single crystals experience an irreversible, first-order transition at T S ~110 K upon first cooling, where the stacking order partly or entirely converts from ABC-stacking order to AA-stacking order. Importantly, the magnetic properties, including the magnetic moment direction and the enhanced T C after the thermal cycling, are intimately related to the alteration of the stacking order. Our work highlights the significant influence of the lattice symmetry to the magnetism in F5GT.

Laser Powder Bed Fusion of ODS 14YWT from Gas Atomization Reaction Synthesis Precursor Powders

Abstract Laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) additive manufacturing (AM) is a promising route for the fabrication of oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) steels. In this study, 14YWT ferritic steel powders were produced by gas atomization reaction synthesis (GARS). The rapid solidification resulted in the formation of stable, Y-containing intermetallic Y 2 Fe 17 on the interior of the powder and a stable Cr-rich oxide surface. The GARS powders were consolidated with LPBF. Process parameter maps identified a stable process window resulting in a relative density of 99.8%. Transmission electron microscopy and high-energy x-ray diffraction demonstrated that during LPBF, the stable phases in the powder dissociated in the liquid melt pool and reacted to form a high density (1.7 × 10 20 /m 3 ) of homogeneously distributed Ti 2 Y 2 O 7 pyrochlore dispersoids ranging from 17 to 57 nm. The use of GARS powder bypasses the mechanical alloying step typically required to produce ODS feedstock. Preliminary mechanical tests demonstrated an ultimate tensile and yield strength of 474 MPa and 312 MPa, respectively.

Multiple magnetic orders in LaFeAs 1-x P x O uncover universality of iron-pnictide superconductors

The iron-pnictide superconductors have generated tremendous excitement as the competition between magnetism and superconductivity has allowed unique in-roads towards elucidating a microscopic theory of unconventional high-temperature superconductivity. In addition to the stripe spin density wave ($C^a_{2M}$) phase observed in the parent compounds of all iron-pnictide superconductors, two novel magnetic orders have recently been discovered in different parent structures: an out-of-plane collinear double-Q ($C^c_{4M}$) structure in the hole-doped (Ca, Sr, Ba) 1-x (Na) x Fe 2 As 2 and Ba 1-x K x Fe 2 As 2 families, and a spin vortex crystal “hedgehog” ($C^{ab}_{4M}$) structure in the CaKFe 4 As 4 family. Using neutron diffraction, we demonstrate that LaFeAs 1-x P x O contains all three magnetic orders within a single-phase diagram as a function of substitution, all of which compete strongly with superconductivity. Our experimental observations combined with theoretical modeling demonstrate how the reduction in electronic correlations by chemical substitution results in larger Fermi surfaces and the sequential stabilization of multiple magnetic anisotropies. Our work presents a unified narrative for the competing magnetic and superconducting phases observed in various iron-pnictide systems with different crystal structures and chemistry.

In situ observation of thermal-driven degradation and safety concerns of lithiated graphite anode

Abstract Graphite, a robust host for reversible lithium storage, enabled the first commercially viable lithium-ion batteries. However, the thermal degradation pathway and the safety hazards of lithiated graphite remain elusive. Here, solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) decomposition, lithium leaching, and gas release of the lithiated graphite anode during heating were examined by in situ synchrotron X-ray techniques and in situ mass spectroscopy. The source of flammable gas such as H 2 was identified and quantitively analyzed. Also, the existence of highly reactive residual lithium on the graphite surface was identified at high temperatures. Our results emphasized the critical role of the SEI in anode thermal stability and uncovered the potential safety hazards of the flammable gases and leached lithium. The anode thermal degradation mechanism revealed in the present work will stimulate more efforts in the rational design of anodes to enable safe energy storage.

Band Engineering of Dirac Semimetals Using Charge Density Waves

New developments in the field of topological matter are often driven by materials discovery, including novel topological insulators, Dirac semimetals and Weyl semimetals. In the last few years, large efforts have been performed to classify all known inorganic materials with respect to their topology. Unfortunately, a large number of topological materials suffer from non-ideal band structures. For example, topological bands are frequently convoluted with trivial ones, and band structure features of interest can appear far below the Fermi level. This leaves just a handful of materials that are intensively studied. Finding strategies to design new topological materials is a solution. Here we introduce a new mechanism that is based on charge density waves and non-symmorphic symmetry to design an idealized Dirac semimetal. We then show experimentally that the antiferromagnetic compound GdSb 0.46 Te 1.48 is a nearly ideal Dirac semimetal based on the proposed mechanism, meaning that most interfering bands at the Fermi level are suppressed. Finally, its highly unusual transport behavior points to a thus far unknown regime, in which Dirac carriers with Fermi energy very close to the node seem to gradually localize in the presence of lattice and magnetic disorder.

Influence of the Cubic Sublattice on Magnetic Coupling between the Tetrahedral Sites of Garnet

Here, we present a study on the nuclear and magnetic structures of two iron-based garnets with magnetic cations isolated on tetrahedral sites. Ca 2 YZr 2 Fe 3 O 12 and Ca 2 LaZr 2 Fe 3 O 12 offer an interesting comparison for examining the effect of increasing cation size within the diamagnetic backbone of the garnet crystal structure, and how such changes affect the magnetic order. Despite both systems exhibiting well-pronounced magnetic transitions at low temperatures, we also find evidence for diffuse magnetic scattering due to a competition between the nearest-neighbor, next nearest-neighbor, and so on, within the tetrahedral sites. This competition results in a complex noncollinear magnetic structure on the tetrahedral sublattice creating a mixture of ferro- and antiferromagnetic interactions above the long-range ordering temperature near 20 K and suggests that the cubic site of the garnet plays a significant role in mediating the superexchange interactions between tetrahedral cations.

Canting of the Magnetic Moments on the Octahedral Site of an Iron Oxide Garnet in Response to Diamagnetic Cation Substitution

Using neutron powder diffraction and magnetic susceptibility measurements, we report on the preparation and characterization of the temperature- and field-dependent properties of CaY2ZrFe4O12, a composition closely related to the high-temperature ferrimagnet Y3Fe5O12. By diluting the concentration of paramagnetic ions on the octahedral sublattice of the garnet structure, we find temperature-dependent canting of the magnetic moments. This reflects the importance of the octahedral sublattice in mediating the magnetic interactions between the tetrahedral sites and offers insight into a large number of competing magnetic interactions in the garnet structure.

Long-range and local crystal structures of the S r 1 - x C a x Ru O 3 perovskites

Here, the crystal structures of the Sr 1–x Ca x RuO 3 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) perovskites are investigated using both long-range and local structural probes. High-resolution synchrotron powder x-ray-diffraction characterization at ambient temperature shows that the materials have orthorhombic long-range crystal structures to high precision, and we support previous work showing that Ca 2+ substitution for Sr 2+ primarily changes the tilting of rigid corner-sharing RuO 6 octahedra at their shared oxygen vertices. X-ray pair-distribution function analysis for SrRuO 3 , CaRuO 3 , and one intermediate composition show them to display monoclinic symmetry at the local level; when averaged over different domain orientations this yields orthorhombic symmetry in the long range, and no long-range or local phase transitions are observed between 80 and 300 K for materials with intermediate compositions. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy shows that the Sr/Ca distribution is random at the nanoscale. Lastly, we plot magnetic characteristics such as the ferromagnetic T c , Curie-Weiss theta, effective moment, and ambient temperature susceptibility vs the octahedral tilt and unit-cell volume.
