Structure and Dynamics of Entanglement in Large Quantum Systems

Final technical report for he DOE QuantISED grant "Structure and Dynamics of Entanglement in Large Quantum Systems", awarded to Profs. Albion Lawrence and Matthew Headrick a Brandeis University. The work on this grant included entanglement in "matrix quantum mechanics", a system wih large numbers of degrees of freedom; the dynamics of a system coupled to a large environment; and the formulation of he "bit threads" picture of entanglement in quantum systems which are equivalent to a theory of quantum gravity.

Microscopic Origin of the Entropy of Black Holes in General Relativity

We construct an infinite family of microstates with geometric interiors for eternal black holes in general relativity with a negative cosmological constant in any dimension. Wormholes in the Euclidean path integral for gravity cause these states to have small, but nonzero, quantum mechanical overlaps that have a universal form. The overlaps have a dramatic consequence: The microstates span a Hilbert space of log dimension equal to the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy. The semiclassical microstates we construct contain Einstein-Rosen bridges of arbitrary size behind their horizons. Our results imply that all these bridges can be interpreted as quantum superpositions of wormholes of size at most exponential in the entropy.

Research in Quantum Field Theory, Cosmology, and String Theory

This project covered research in theoretical high energy physics at Brandeis University by PI Albion Lawrence and Co-PIs Matthew Headrick and Howard Schnitzer. The work of Albion Lawrence covered quantum field theoretic models of cosmic inflation and of quintessence-type dark energy, consistent with constraints on quantum gravity; the dynamics of open quantum systems, with an eye towards applications to holography; and the application of quantum information theory – particularly measures of quantum entanglement – to quantum field theories and quantum gravity. The work of Matthew Headrick covered the intersection of quantum information theory and quantum gravity, with a focus on the holographic encoding of quantum information theoretic concepts such as entanglement and computational complexity in field theory. Headrick also achieved significant technical results in closed string field theory. The work of Howard Schnitzer covered the computation of quantum information theoretic quantities in quantum field theories.

Target space entanglement in Matrix Models

We study target space entanglement in gauged multi-matrix models as models of entanglement between groups of D-branes separated by a planar entangling surface, paying close attention to the implementation of gauge invariance. We open with a review of target space entanglement between identical particles, which shares some important features (specifically a gauged permutation symmetry) with our main problem. For our matrix models, we implement a gauge fixing well-adapted to the entangling surface. In this gauge, we map the matrix model problem to that of entanglement of a U(1) gauge theory on a complete or all-to-all lattice. Matrix elements corresponding to open strings stretching across the entangling surface in the target space lead to interesting contributions to the entanglement entropy.
