Constraining explosive nucleosynthesis by indirect reaction methods at storage rings using unstable beams in batch mode

Nuclear reaction studies on unstable isotopes can strongly help in improving our understanding of nucleosynthesis in stars. Indirect approaches to determining astrophysical reaction rates are increasingly common-place and undergoing continuous refinement. Of particular interest is the use of such indirect techniques at storage rings, which, among other aspects, allow to recycle rare unstable beams. Here, we propose to investigate the reaction rates of astrophysical interest using indirect methods (surrogate, Trojan horse, etc.) in reverse kinematics at the IMP-CAS storage ring. Long lived radioactive ion beams, produced remotely, can be accelerated, and made to interact with light targets. The proposed reactions are 85 Kr(p, p’γ), 85 Kr(d, pΞ³), constraining the neutron flux in an s-process branching point, 79 Se(p, p’γ), 79 Se(d, pΞ³), constraining the temperature in s-process nucleosyntheses, and 59 Fe(d, pΞ³), constraining core collapse supernovae.

𝐡⁑(𝐸⁒2) measurements in the yrast band of 28 Mg: Implications for the 𝑁 = 20 island of inversion

High-precision lifetime measurements in 28 Mg were performed to study neutron shell evolution in Mg isotopes and the onset of the N = 20 island of inversion. Here, using both the recoil distance and Doppler shift attenuation methods, five lifetimes were measured in addition to six upper limits. The observation of two long-lived, negative-parity states demonstrate the importance of studying Mg isotopes for the contribution of intruder configurations to sd-shell nuclei. Lifetimes of the $2^+_1$ and $4^+_1$ states of 1.81(5) ps and 172⁒($^{+11}_{–10}$) stat.⁒ (4) stop. ⁒(8) feed.⁒ (4) targ. fs, respectively, demonstrate a loss of collectivity with increasing spin in the yrast band, permitting for distinguishing between current theoretical models. These measurements also highlight the progression of yrast structure across the Mg isotopic chain from rotational at N = 12 to large shape mixing at N = 16 and back to collective behavior at N = 20 but with dominating intruder configurations.

Measurement of the Isolated Nuclear Two-Photon Decay in Ge 72

The nuclear two-photon or double-gamma (2 γ ) decay is a second-order electromagnetic process whereby a nucleus in an excited state emits two gamma rays simultaneously. To be able to directly measure the 2⁒ γ decay rate in the low-energy regime below the electron-positron pair-creation threshold, we combined the isochronous mode of a storage ring with Schottky resonant cavities. The newly developed technique can be applied to isomers with excitation energies down to ~100 keV and half-lives as short as ~10 ms. The half-life for the 2⁒ γ decay of the first-excited 0 + state in bare 72 Ge ions was determined to be 23.9(6) ms, which strongly deviates from expectations.
