Total Ionizing Dose Effects on Voltage-to-Frequency Converters

This paper discusses total dose effects on voltage-to-frequency converters which impose different requirements on internal circuitry, and are also very high-precision devices (for example, linearity is typically specified between 0.002 and 0.05%).

Recent radiation effects activities at JPL: Coping with COTS

Radiation effects and testing programs on commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) devices and circuits, which are important for NASA programs, are discussed. Demands for increased performance levels in spacecraft systems is stimulating the use of electronic and photonic devices. Some advances in electronics to reach high performance will result in the miniaturization of devices, which will lead to increased radiation vulnerability.

Optimal 3D Viewing with Adaptive Stereo Displays for Advanced Telemanipulation

A method of optimal 3D viewing based on adaptive displays of stereo images is presented for advanced telemanipulation. The method provides the viewer with the capability of accurately observing a virtual 3D object or local scene of his/her choice with minimum distortion.

High-temperature-superconducting magnetic susceptibility bolometer

An infrared detector called the magnetic susceptibility bolometer is introduced which is based on the tmperature dependence of the diamagnetic screening of a high-Tc superconductor film near Tc. Results are reported for the response of a prototype model to modulated blackbody radiation. Possible improvements are discussed as is the potential sensitivity of an improved device.

Damping Seals Would Help Support Turbopump Rotor

Report describes engineering study of proposed use of damping seals as major load-carrying members of high-pressure-oxygen turbopump of Space Shuttle main engine. Incorporated into bearing packages at preburner-pump and turbine-end locations on pump rotor. Concept motivated by need to increase operating lives of ball bearings supporting rotor by relieving them of damaging transient lateral loads.

High Speed Balancing Applied to the T700 Engine

The work performed under Contracts NAS3-23929 and NAS3-24633 is presented. MTI evaluated the feasibility of high-speed balancing for both the T700 power turbine rotor and the compressor rotor. Modifications were designed for the existing Corpus Christi Army Depot (CCAD) T53/T55 high-speed balancing system for balancing T700 power turbine rotors. Tests conducted under these contracts included a high-speed balancing evaluation for T700 power turbines in the Army/NASA drivetrain facility at MTI. The high-speed balancing tests demonstrated the reduction of vibration amplitudes at operating speed for both low-speed balanced and non-low-speed balanced T700 power turbines. In addition, vibration data from acceptance tests of T53, T55, and T700 engines were analyzed and a vibration diagnostic procedure developed.

Analysis and design of a gas-lubricated, sectored, floating ring seal

Helium buffered floating-ring seals used in cryogenic turbopumps are subject to large temperature variations, shaft centrifugal growth, and dynamic shaft excursions. To prevent dangerous contact friction over a wide range of operating conditions generally requires liberal clearances with consequent high leakage. Reduction of helium consumption translates into lower space vehicle helium storage requirements and thus increased payload. A hydrostatic sectored floating-ring seal is described with self-adjusting clearance capabilities that enables the seal to operate with small clearances over the operating range to minimize leakage.

Integration and compaction of optical systems in the mid-infrared

Problems in the design of optical systems for use with mid-IR (MIR; 10.6-micron) lasers are reviewed. The cryogenically operated lead-chalcogenide tunable diode lasers currently used as sources emit complex far-field patterns and require sophisticated beam collection, shaping, and guide optics. Since conventional optics using large mirrors and Ge lenses are often awkward to use and sensitive to vibration, and since optical fibers for the MIR have not been perfected, current research concentrates on hollow flexible rectangular metallic pipes. These pipes are shown to provide transmission of 95 percent or better over a 1-m length, with beam shaping and polarization control. The low transmission losses and wideband IR transmission of single-crystal alkali halides suggest the feasibility of their use in MIR optical fibers and waveguides.

Thermionic energy converter investigations

This paper presents evaluation of a variety of thermionic converter configurations to obtain improved efficiency. A variable-spacing diode using an iridium emitter gave emission properties comparable to platinum, but the power output from a sintered LaB6 collector diode was not consistent with its work function. Reflectivities above 0.5 were measured at thermal energies on oxygenated-cesiated surfaces using a field emission retarding potential gun. Performance of converters with structured electrodes and the characteristics of a pulsed triode were studied as a function of emitter, collector, cesium reservoir, interelectrode spacing, xenon pressure, and pulsing parameters.

Organizing for low cost space operations - Status and plans

Design features of the Space Transportation System (vehicle reuse, low cost expendable components, simple payload interfaces, standard support systems) must be matched by economical operational methods to achieve low operating and payload costs. Users will be responsible for their own payloads and will be charged according to the services they require. Efficient use of manpower, simple documentation, simplified test, checkout, and flight planning are firm goals, together with flexibility for quick response to varying user needs. Status of the Shuttle hardware, plans for establishing low cost procedures, and the policy for user charges are discussed.

Amino acids in modern and fossil woods

The amino acid composition and the extent of racemization in several modern and fossil woods are reported. The method of analysis is described, and data are presented on the total amino acid concentration, the amino acid ratios, and the enantiomeric ratios in each sample. It is found that the amino acid concentration per gram of dry wood decreases with age of the sample, that the extent of racemization increases with increasing age, and that the amounts of aspartic acid, threonine, and serine decrease relative to valine with increasing age. The relative racemization rates of amino acids in wood, bone, and aqueous solution are compared, and it is shown that racemization in wood is much slower than in bone or aqueous solution. Racemization results for woods from the Kalambo Falls area of Zambia are used to calculate a minimum age of 110,000 years for the transition between the Sangoan and Acheulian industries at that site. This result is shown to be consistent with numerous radiometric dates for older Acheulian sites in Africa and to compare well with geologically inferred dates for the beginning of the Eemian and the end of the Acheulian industry in southern Africa.

Superradiant effects on pulse propagation in resonant media

Adopting the so-called genealogical construction, the eigenstates of collective operators can be expressed corresponding to a specified mode for an N-atom system in terms of those for an (N-1)-atom system. Matrix element of a collective operator of an arbitrary mode is presented which can be written as the product of an m-dependent factor and an m-independent reduced matrix element (RME). A set of recursion formulas for the RME was obtained. A graphical representation of the RME on the branching diagram for binary irreducible representations of permutation groups was then introduced. This gave a simple and systematic way of calculating the RME. Results show explicitly the geometry dependence of superradiance and the relative importance of r-conserving and r-nonconserving processes and clears up the chief difficulty encounted in the problem of N two-level atoms, spread over large regions, interacting with a multimode radiation field.
