Finite-element solution for a combined radiative-conductive analysis with mixed diffuse-specular surface characteristics

The finite-element method has been applied to solve a combined radiative-conductive heat transfer problem for a large space telescope similar to those used in orbiting satellites. The derivation of the underlying matrices and associated solution algorithm for a 2-D triangular element is presented in detail. The resulting expressions for this triangular element typify such an analysis, which yields constitutive matrices when the heat equation is cast in the matrix form. The relevant matrices include those pertaining to thermal conductance, internal heat generation, radiative exchanges, and all possible external thermal loadings. Emphasis is placed on the treatment of non-linear radiative interchange between surfaces in an enclosure having mixed diffuse-specular surface characteristics. Essential differences in governing equations describing these distinctive surface characteristics are identified. Concluding remarks are drawn from an example simulating a Cassegrainian space telescope.

Using the NASTRAN Thermal Analyzer to simulate a flight scientific instrument package

The NASTRAN Thermal Analyzer has proven to be a unique and useful tool for thermal analyses involving large and complex structures where small, thermally induced deformations are critical. Among its major advantages are direct grid point-to-grid point compatibility with large structural models; plots of the model that may be generated for both conduction and boundary elements; versatility of applying transient thermal loads especially to repeat orbital cycles; on-line printer plotting of temperatures and rate of temperature changes as a function of time; and direct matrix input to solve linear differential equations on-line. These features provide a flexibility far beyond that available in most finite-difference thermal analysis computer programs.

Application of finite-element method in the computation of temperature with emphasis on radiative exchanges.

Analyses pertaining to the solution of heat transfer problems in combined modes based on the finite-element method are presented. Two elements - a triangular element employing two spatial variables and a multi-faceted bar element employing one spatial variable - with nonlinear radiation on the boundaries are detailed. The radiative effects considered on the diffuse-gray surface elements include: (1) directional radiant fluxes from distant sources, (2) radiative exchanges including surfaces of prescribed temperatures, and (3) radiative exchanges including elements whose temperatures are not known a priori. The nonlinear part of the boundary condition is treated in two different ways: (1) a consistent linearization method, and (2) a direct energy distribution method. Applications of these elements together with solution algorithms to three sample problems exhibit solution capability and obtainable accuracy.
