Thiol- and Disulfide-Functionalized Polycyclooctene: Metathesis Polymerization, Degradation, and Reformation

The enormous global production and use of polymers and plastics, combined with slower and less efficient disposal and recycling methods, have led to a worldwide growth in plastic waste. Here, we describe an approach that builds degradability into macromolecular polyolefins through the design of telechelic oligomers with reactive functional groups that enables control over polymer deconstruction and reconstruction. Our work exploits disulfide-containing polymers that have emerged as promising cyclable materials due to their dynamic reversibility (bond formation and cleavage) driven by redox chemistry under mild conditions. Specifically, we describe the synthesis of a telechelic α,ω-dithiopolycyclooctene (PCOE) by ring-opening metathesis polymerization using a dithioacetate chain transfer agent, followed by deprotection to convert the chain-end thioacetates to thiols. This process was studied towards control over the degree of oxidation to yield disulfide-containing PCOE, followed by an evaluation of reductive degradation and oxidative repolymerization. Overall, this approach facilitates the production of disulfide-containing unsaturated polyolefins and the integration of degradable and reformable moieties into soluble, processable, metathesis-derived polymers.

Impacts of Disulfide‐Containing Monomers in Alternating Diene Metathesis Polymerization

ABSTRACT Among the classes of synthetic polymers, disulfide‐containing structures offer unique opportunities due to their accessibility to redox chemistry that allows for degradation or reversible disulfide formation and exchange under mild conditions. Here, we examine the role of disulfides in olefin metathesis polymerization, specifically alternating diene metathesis (ALTMET) polymerization, for synthesizing unsaturated polyolefins with embedded disulfides. Our synthetic strategy hinged on the use of α,ω‐diacrylate monomers, including those connected by a disulfide unit, via copolymerization by the ALTMET mechanism to yield copolymers containing a range of disulfide content. In addition, the potential impacts of sulfur‐ruthenium interactions on the ALTMET process were investigated spectroscopically, while the degradation of the resultant polymers was affected by mild reducing agents. Overall, this study contributes to the development of degradable synthetic polymers using olefin metathesis methods, with an increased understanding of the potential for further use of disulfide groups in such metathesis reactions.

Silylsilane‐Substituted Polymers: Fluorine‐Free, Liquid Repellent, and Hydrolytically Stable Alternatives to Siloxanes

Abstract Per‐ and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are omniphobic and exceptionally stable, making them ideal for a wide range of materials applications. However, as “forever chemicals”, their exceptional persistence and bioaccumulation have generated an increasing amount of environmental and health concerns, prompting the search for fluorine‐free alternatives. Siloxane‐based materials are therefore interesting to examine as PFAS alternatives due to their low surface energy and hydrophobicity but suffer from hydrolytic instability of Si─O linkages. To address this challenge, a novel methacrylate monomer, 3‐[tris(trimethylsilyl)silyl]propyl methacrylate (M‐silyl), is designed containing Si─Si bonds rather than Si─O bonds of siloxanes. Polymers derived from M‐silyl (P‐silyl) is prepared by controlled free radical polymerization and compared with their siloxane analogues after coating on silicon wafers. Contact angle (CA) measurements confirmed P‐silyl to be hydrophobic (advancing/receding water CA = 109.7°/83.0°), with a low‐hysteresis for oil (lyophobic) (hexadecane CA hysteresis = 2.0°), comparable to its siloxane‐based counterpart. Importantly, P‐silyl maintained these surface properties after exposure to acidic or basic conditions, while siloxane analogues lost hydrophobicity. Consequently, the incorporation of Si ─ Si linkages into the design of the polymer enables chemically stable, fluorine‐free alternatives for water‐repellent and low hysteresis surface coatings and advances the design of fluorine‐free functional materials.
