Integrated Phase Array Antenna/Solar Cell System for Flexible Access Communication (IA/SAC)

This paper describes recent efforts to integrate advanced solar cells with printed planar antennas. Several previous attempts have been reported in the literature, but this effort is unique in several ways. It uses Gallium Arsenide (GaAs) multi-junction solar cell technology. The solar cells and antennas will be integrated onto a common GaAs substrate. When fully implemented, IA/SAC will be capable of dynamic beam steering. In addition, this program targets the X-band (8 - 12 GHz) and higher frequencies, as compared to the 2.2 - 2.9 GHz arrays targeted by other organizations. These higher operating frequencies enable a greater bandwidth and thus higher data transfer rates. The first phase of the effort involves the development of 2 x 2 cm GaAs Monolithically Integrated Modules (MIM) with integrated patch antennas on the opposite side of the substrate. Subsequent work will involve the design and development of devices having the GaAs MIMs and the antennas on the same side of the substrate. Results from the phase one efforts will be presented.

Multi-beam Phased Array Antennas

Many of NASA's future missions require multiple accesses to work together as a single system. To accomplish these missions, multi-beam phased array antennas are required to communicate between satellites flying in fixed formation. In this paper, a comparison of different multi-beam systems will be given followed by detailed discussions of the lens array architecture and test results.

Impedance Matching of Tapered Slot Antenna using a Dielectric Transformer

A new impedance matching technique for tapered slot antennas using a dielectric transformer is presented. The technique is demonstrated by measuring the input impedance, Voltage Standing Wave Ratio (VSWR) and the gain of a Vivaldi antenna (VA). Measured results at Ka-Band frequencies are presented and discussed.

FDTD Analysis of U-Slot Rectangular Patch Antenna

The U-slot rectangular patch antenna (Figure I) has been found experimentally to provide impedance and gain bandwidths of about 300 without the need of stacked or coplanar parasitic elements [1,2]. In this paper, simulation results of the U-slot patch using FDTD analysis are presented. Comparison with measured results are given.

Effect of Parasitic Dielectric Resonators on CPW/Aperture-Coupled Dielectric Resonator Antennas

The effects of parasitic dielectric resonators on the HE (sub 11 sigma) and HE (High Efficiency) (sub 13 sigma) modes of a cylindrical dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) have been studied. The DRA was excited electromagnetically with a grounded coplanar waveguide through an aperture in the common ground plane. Strong couplings were observed for the HE (sub 11 sigma) mode with the parasitic element superimposed on the driven DRA, and for the HE (sub 13 sigma) mode with parasitic elements placed on both sides of the driven DRA. Results indicate significant enhancement in bandwidth for both modes, and good radiation patterns for the HE (sub 11 sigma) mode.

Directivity versus element spacing for a scanning array

The results of the present examination of the relationship of directivity with element spacings of linear, rectangular, and hexagonal arrays indicate that element spacings for optimal directivity vary with scan angles; this is especially true in the case of changes in aperture sizes and the appearance of grating lobes in the visible space. Grating lobe effects are more pronounced for isotropic than for directive element arrays. Directivity decreases as the beam scans off from boresight, and rapidly diminishes for scans over 30 deg. The hexagonal array has higher directivity for scans of less than 20 deg, and the linear array for those over 30 deg.

Input impedance of coaxially fed rectangular microstrip antenna on electrically thick substrate

A full-wave spectral domain analysis has been used to obtain input-impedance results for a probe-fed rectangular-patch antenna, modeling the source as a magnetic-current frill. Multiple modes are used in the probe surface current to account for axial and azimuthal variations. It is established that maximum resistance is dependent on the substrate loss tangent. The axial variation of the probe current must be taken into account for substrate thicknesses greater than about 0.02 wavelengths.

Spectral-domain moment-method analysis of coplanar microstrip parasitic subarrays

Basic characteristics of several configurations of coplanar microstrip parasitic subarrays consisting of one fed patch and two or more parasitic patches were investigated by means of a spectral-domain full-wave analysis and the moment method analysis. Results are presented for radiating- and nonradiating edge-coupled three-element linear subarrays and for a five-patch cross. A comparison of the theoretical input impedance results obtained by the analysis of a three-element linear array showed a reasonable agreement between computed and measured R and X values.

Mutual coupling between rectangular microstrip patch antennas

The paper presents a comprehensive study of the mutual coupling between two rectangular microstrip patch antennas. The cavity model is employed to give numerical results for both mutual impedance and mutual coupling parameters for the E-plane, H-plane, diagonal, and perpendicular orientations. The effects of substrate thickness, substrate permittivity, and feed positions are discussed.

Performance of a K-band superconducting annular ring antenna

Superconducting annular ring antennas operating in the TM12 mode at 21 GHz are designed and fabricated on a lanthanum aluminate substrate using a YBCO high-temperature superconducting thin film. The efficiencies and far-field antenna patterns are measured and compared with an identical antenna patterned with silver. The resonant frequencies and experimental far-field patterns agree well with published models, and efficiency measurements show a maximum improvement of 6 percent at 20 K in the efficiency of the HTS antenna when compared to the silver ring at the same temperature.

New Techniques for Exciting Linearly Tapered Slot Antennas with Coplanar Waveguide

Two new techniques for exciting a linearly tapered slot antenna (LTSA) with coplanar waveguide (CPW) are introduced. In the first approach, an air bridge is used to couple power from a CPW to an LTSA. In the second approach, power is electromagnetically coupled from a finite CPW (FCPW) to an LTSA. Measured results at 18 GHz show excellent return loss and radiation patterns.

A vertically integrated Ka-band phased array antenna

The design, development, and experimental demonstration of a small phased array antenna suitable for applications on communications satellites are discussed. Each of the vertical layers was optimized for performance, and MMICs on custom carriers were characterized prior to insertion. A vertical integration architecture is used which minimizes the size of the array with its associated beamforming network (BFN). The antenna features a four-element linear microstrip array that uses aperture coupling of the antenna elements to the BFN; a modified Wilkinson power divider BFN; and 32 Ghz, 4-bit MMIC phase shifters on customized alumina carriers. Performance data are presented for all components, and far-field antenna radiation patterns are given.

Coplanar Waveguide Aperture Coupled Patch Antennas with Ground Plane/Substrate of Finite Extent

Coplanar waveguide (CPW)/aperture coupled microstrip patch antennas constructed with ground coplanar waveguide (GCPW), finite coplanar waveguide (FCPW) and channelized coplanar waveguide (CCPW) are demonstrated. The measured characteristics show that the CCPW/aperture coupled microstrip patch antenna has the largest bandwidth, whereas the GCPW/aperture coupled microstrip patch antenna has the best front-to-back ratio.

Ka-band MMIC microstrip array for high rate communications

In a recent technology assessment of alternative communication systems for the space exploration initiative (SEI), Ka-band (18 to 40 GHz) communication technology was identified to meet the mission requirements of telecommunication, navigation, and information management. Compared to the lower frequency bands, Ka-band antennas offer higher gain and broader bandwidths; thus, they are more suitable for high data rate communications. Over the years, NASA has played an important role in monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) phased array technology development, and currently, has an ongoing contract with Texas Instrument (TI) to develop a modular Ka-band MMIC microstrip subarray (NAS3-25718). The TI contract emphasizes MMIC integration technology development and stipulates using existing MMIC devices to minimize the array development cost. The objective of this paper is to present array component technologies and integration techniques used to construct the subarray modules.

A 29.3-GHz cavity-enclosed aperture-coupled circular-patch antenna for microwave circuit integration

A circular patch antenna fed by an aperture-coupled microstrip line has been demonstrated at 29.3 GHz. The patch was enclosed by a cavity to reduce surface-wave interactions in an array environment and to improve heat dissipation when using active devices. The antenna exhibited a 2:1 input VSWR (voltage standing wave ratio) over a bandwidth of 12 percent from 27.52 to 30.95 GHz. The antenna should have applications in conformal phased arrays at millimeter-wave frequencies.

New coplanar waveguide/stripline feed network for seven patch hexagonal CP subarray

A novel CPW-to-stripline post coupler is demonstrated. This device couples the output power from a coax-to-CPW inphase seven-way radial power divider to a balanced stripline line stretcher and together forms a multilayer probe-type feed network. The feed network excites a seven-patch hexagonal circularly polarized (CP) subarray. The measured return loss and insertion loss of the coupler are better than 17 dB and 0.25 dB at the design frequency of 2.875 GHz. The measured on-axis axial ratio for the left hand circular polarization (LHCP) is 1.5 dB and the 3 dB beam widths are 36 deg in the principal planes of the subarray. The gain of the subarray is 13 dB. The input return loss of the subarray is better than 10 dB.
