Observation of orbital selective charge transfer in a Fe/BaTi⁢O 3 interfacial two-dimensional electron gas

Two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) states at oxide interfaces between two ferroic materials have been fertile ground to realize controllable multiferroicity. Here, in this work, we investigate the 2DEG states at the interface of ferroelectric BaTi⁢O 3 and a magnetic layer of iron using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Orbital-selective charge transfer occurs on the surprisingly robust 2DEG. Based on first-principles calculations, we show how the interfacial hybridization can give rise to the unexpected charge transfer in the magnetic 2DEG. Our study reveals a close interplay on a 2DEG between magnetic and ferroelectric interfaces, which sheds light on future design principles of multiferroic 2DEG states.

Low-energy electronic interactions in ferrimagnetic Sr 2 CrReO 6 thin films

We reveal in this study the fundamental low-energy landscape in the ferrimagnetic Sr 2 CrReO 6 double perovskite and describe the underlying mechanisms responsible for the three low-energy excitations below 1.4 eV. Here, based on resonant inelastic x-ray scattering and magnetic dynamics calculations, and experiments collected from both Sr 2 CrReO 6 powders and epitaxially strained thin films, we reveal a strong competition between spin-orbit coupling, Hund’s coupling, and the strain-induced tetragonal crystal field. Here, we also demonstrate that a spin-flip process is at the origin of the lowest excitation at 200 meV, and we bring insights into the predicted presence of orbital ordering in this material. We study the nature of the magnons through a combination of ab initio and spin-wave theory calculations, and show that two nondegenerate magnon bands exist and are dominated either by rhenium or chromium spins. The rhenium band is found to be flat at about 200 meV (±25 meV) through X-L-W-U high-symmetry points and is dispersive toward Γ.

Polarity‐Driven Atomic Displacements at the 2D Mg 2 TiO 4 ‐MgO (001) Oxide Interface for Hosting Potential Interlayer Excitons

Abstract Interlayer excitons in solid‐state systems have emerged as candidates for realizing novel platforms ranging from excitonic transistors and optical qubits to exciton condensates. Interlayer excitons have been discovered in 2D transition metal dichalcogenides, with large exciton binding energies and the ability to form various van der Waals heterostructures. Here, an oxide system consisting of a single unit cell of Mg 2 TiO 4 on MgO (001) is proposed as a platform for hosting interlayer excitons. Using a combination of density functional theory (DFT) calculations, molecular beam epitaxy growth, and in situ crystal truncation rod measurements, it is shown that the Mg 2 TiO 4 ‐MgO interface can be precisely controlled to yield an internal electric field suitable for hosting interlayer excitons. The atoms in the polar Mg 2 TiO 4 layers are observed to be displaced to reduce polarity at the interface with the non‐polar MgO (001) surface. Such polarity‐driven atomic displacements strongly affect electrostatics of the film and the interface, resulting in localization of filled and empty band‐edge states in different layers of the Mg 2 TiO 4 film. The DFT calculations suggest that the electronic structure is favorable for localization of photoexcited electrons in the bottom layer and holes in the top layer, which may bind to form interlayer exciton states.

High-order replica bands in monolayer FeSe/SrTiO3 revealed by polarization-dependent photoemission spectroscopy

Abstract The mechanism of the enhanced superconductivity in monolayer FeSe/SrTiO 3 has been enthusiastically studied and debated over the past decade. One specific observation has been taken to be of central importance: the replica bands in the photoemission spectrum. Although suggestive of electron-phonon interaction in the material, the essence of these spectroscopic features remains highly controversial. In this work, we conduct angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements on monolayer FeSe/SrTiO 3 using linearly polarized photons. This configuration enables unambiguous characterization of the valence electronic structure with a suppression of the spectral background. We consistently observe high-order replica bands derived from various Fe 3 d bands, similar to those observed on bare SrTiO 3 . The intensity of the replica bands is unexpectedly high and different between d xy and d yz bands. Our results provide new insights on the electronic structure of this high-temperature superconductor and the physical origin of the photoemission replica bands.

Electronic properties of epitaxial La 1- x Sr x RhO 3 thin films

Here, we report on the synthesis and electronic properties of epitaxial perovskite La 1- x Sr x RhO 3 thin films. Thin films with a Sr content ranging from $\textit{x}$ = 0 to 0.5 have been grown using molecular beam epitaxy. Transport and x-ray photoemission spectroscopy data reveal an insulator-metal-insulator transition, accompanied by a $\textit{p-}$ to $\textit{n}-$ type carrier change observed in Hall measurements. Combined with theoretical calculations, we find that the addition of Sr does not directly dope carriers into the conduction band, but rather induces localized Rh 4$\textit{d}$ states within the LaRhO 3 band gap. The bandwidth of the impurity band increases with Sr content, eventually causing the valence band (VB) and the localized Rh 4$\textit{d}$ band to overlap, which explains the first insulator-to-metal transition occurring at $\textit{x}$ = 0.35. For Sr content $\textit{x}$ > 0.4, possible cation ordering results in an increase of the gap between the VB and the Rh 4$\textit{d}$ band, leading to the second metal-to-insulator transition. We map out the electronic phase diagram of the Sr-doped LaRhO 3 system and suggest strategies to engineer the electronic states in rhodate systems via delocalizing the Rh 3+ states.

Tuning spin excitations in magnetic films by confinement

Spin excitations of magnetic thin films are the founding element for novel transport concepts in spintronics, magnonics, and magnetic devices in general. While spin dynamics have been extensively studied in bulk materials, their behaviour in mesoscopic films is less known due to experimental limitations. Here, we employ Resonant Inelastic X-Ray Scattering to investigate the spin excitation spectrum in mesoscopic Fe films, from bulk-like down to 3 unit cells thick. In bulk-like samples, we find isotropic, dispersive ferromagnons consistent with the dispersion observed by neutron scattering in bulk single crystals. As the thickness is reduced, these ferromagnons survive and evolve anisotropically: renormalising to lower energies along the out-of-plane direction while retaining their dispersion in the in-plane direction. This thickness dependence is captured by simple Heisenberg model calculations accounting for the confinement in the out-of-plane direction through the loss of Fe bonds. Overall, our findings highlight the effects of mesoscopic scaling on spin dynamics and identify thickness as a knob for fine-tuning and controlling magnetic properties in films.

Single-crystalline epitaxial TiO film: A metal and superconductor, similar to Ti metal

Titanium monoxide (TiO), an important member of the rock salt 3d transition-metal monoxides, has not been studied in the stoichiometric single-crystal form. It has been challenging to prepare stoichiometric TiO due to the highly reactive Ti 2+ . We adapt a closely lattice-matched MgO(001) substrate and report the successful growth of single-crystalline TiO(001) film using molecular beam epitaxy. This enables a first-time study of stoichiometric TiO thin films, showing that TiO is metal but in proximity to Mott insulating state. We observe a transition to the superconducting phase below 0.5 K close to that of Ti metal. Density functional theory (DFT) and a DFT-based tight-binding model demonstrate the extreme importance of direct Ti–Ti bonding in TiO, suggesting that similar superconductivity exists in TiO and Ti metal. Our work introduces the new concept that TiO behaves more similar to its metal counterpart, distinguishing it from other 3d transition-metal monoxides.

A comprehensive ARPES study on the type-II Dirac semimetal candidate Ir 1-x Pt x Te 2

The transition metal dichalcogenide Ir 1-x Pt x Te 2 displays both superconductivity and a topological band structure. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we obtain a comprehensive understanding of the three-dimensional electronic structure in the normal state of Ir 1-x Pt x Te 2 for doping levels from x = 0.1 to 0.4, which spans the composition range of a superconducting state to a non-superconducting state. Many features of the electronic structure can be attributed to strong Te–Te interactions between the layers of the layered crystal structure and can be resolved by photon energy dependent measurements. We demonstrate that the type-II Dirac fermions can be successfully tuned via Pt doping, where the Dirac point lies close to the Fermi level for x = 0.1. The band evolution vs doping provides a clearer understanding of the relationship between the superconductivity and electronic structure. In addition, the β band in the superconducting samples locates the system close to a type-II van Hove singularity, where spin triplet paring symmetry has been predicted. Our results provide a comprehensive understanding of the band structure of Ir 1-x Pt x Te 2 , and we discuss the possibilities of the existence of topological superconductivity in this system.

Surface-induced thickness limit of conducting La-doped SrTiO 3 thin films

In this paper, we report on a surface-induced, insulating, electrically dead layer in ultrathin conducting La-doped SrTiO 3 thin films. Systematic studies on electrical properties as a function of film thickness and La-doping levels reveal that the insulating layer has a constant thickness and traps a constant amount of electron density regardless of La-doping levels. Growing an additional capping layer on top of the La-doped SrTiO 3 surface counteracts the reduced conductivity, indicating a strong relationship between the insulating layer and the surface structure. Our results emphasize the importance of surface state studies for functional oxides in the thin film limit and provide a guiding principle for the fabrication of La-doped SrTiO 3 -based oxide nanoscale devices.
