Establishing Co‐Continuous Network of Conjugated Polymers and Elastomers for High‐Performance Polymer Solar Cells with Extreme Stretchability

High power conversion efficiency (PCE) and mechanical robustness are prerequisites for wearable applications of organic solar cells (OSCs). However, stretchability of present active systems (i.e., crack-onset strain (COS) < 30%) should be improved. While introducing elastomers into active systems is considered a simple method for improving stretchability, the inclusion of elastomers typically results in a decrease in PCE of the OSC with a limited enhancement in the stretchability due to lack of interconnected electrical and mechanical pathways. In this study, it is developed efficient and intrinsically stretchable (IS)-OSCs with exceptional mechanical robustness, by constructing co-continuous networks of conjugated polymers (D18) and elastomers (SEBS) within active layers. It is demonstrated that the blend film with a specific ratio (40:60 w/w) of D18:SEBS is crucial for forming co-continuous structures, establishing well-connected mechanical and electrical channels. Consequently, D18 0.4 :SEBS 0.6 /L8-BO OSCs achieve 16-times higher stretchability (COS = 126%) than the OSCs based on D18/L8-BO (COS = 8%), while achieving 4-times higher PCE (12.13%) compared to the OSCs based on SEBS-rich active layers (D18 0.2 :SEBS 0.8 /L8-BO, PCE = 3.15%). Furthermore, D18 0.4 :SEBS 0.6 -based IS-OSCs preserve 86 and 90% of original PCEs at 50% strain and after 200 stretching/releasing cycles with 15% strain, respectively, demonstrating the highest mechanical robustness among reported IS-OSCs.

Aqueous Processed All-Polymer Solar Cells with High Open-Circuit Voltage Based on Low-Cost Thiophene–Quinoxaline Polymers

Eco-friendly solution processing and the low-cost synthesis of photoactive materials are important requirements for the commercialization of organic solar cells (OSCs). Although varieties of aqueous-soluble acceptors have been developed, the availability of aqueous-processable polymer donors remains quite limited. In particular, the generally shallow highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy levels of existing polymer donors limit further increases in the power conversion efficiency (PCE). Here, we design and synthesize two water/alcohol-processable polymer donors, poly[(thiophene-2,5-diyl)-alt-(2-((13-(2,5,8,11-tetraoxadodecyl)-2,5,8,11-tetraoxatetradecan-14-yl)oxy)-6,7-difluoroquinoxaline-5,8-diyl)] (P(Qx8O-T)) and poly[(selenophene-2,5-diyl)-alt-(2-((13-(2,5,8,11-tetraoxadodecyl)-2,5,8,11-tetraoxatetradecan-14-yl)oxy)-6,7-difluoroquinoxaline-5,8-diyl)] (P(Qx8O-Se)) with oligo(ethylene glycol) (OEG) side chains, having deep HOMO energy levels (~–5.4 eV). The synthesis of the polymers is achieved in a few synthetic and purification steps at reduced cost. The theoretical calculations uncover that the dielectric environmental variations are responsible for the observed band gap lowering in OEG-based polymers compared to their alkylated counterparts. Notably, the aqueous-processed all-polymer solar cells (aq-APSCs) based on P(Qx8O-T) and poly[(N,N'-bis(3-(2-(2-(2-methoxyethoxy)-ethoxy)ethoxy)-2-((2-(2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethoxy)ethoxy)-methyl)propyl)naphthalene-1,4,5,8-bis(dicarboximide)-2,6-diyl)-alt-(2,5-thiophene)] (P(NDIDEG-T)) active layer exhibit a PCE of 2.27% and high open-circuit voltage (V OC ) approaching 0.8 V, which are among the highest values for aq-APSCs reported to date. This study provides important clues for the design of low-cost, aqueous-processable polymer donors and the fabrication of aqueous-processable OSCs with high V OC .

Colloidal InAs Quantum Dot-Based Infrared Optoelectronics Enabled by Universal Dual-Ligand Passivation

Solution-processed low-bandgap semiconductors are crucial to next-generation infrared (IR) detection for various applications, such as autonomous driving, virtual reality, recognitions, and quantum communications. In particular, III–V group colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) are interesting as nontoxic bandgap-tunable materials and suitable for IR absorbers; however, the device performance is still lower than that of Pb-based devices. Herein, a universal surface-passivation method of InAs CQDs enabled by intermediate phase transfer (IPT), a preliminary process that exchanges native ligands with aromatic ligands on the CQD surface is presented. IPT yields highly stable CQD ink. In particular, desirable surface ligands with various reactivities can be obtained by dispersing them in green solvents. Furthermore, CQD near-infrared (NIR) photodetectors are demonstrated using solution processes. Careful surface ligand control via IPT is revealed that enables the modulation of surface-mediated photomultiplication, resulting in a notable gain control up to ≈10 with a fast rise/fall response time (≈12/36 ns). Considering the figure of merit (FOM), EQE versus response time (or –3 dB bandwidth), the optimal CQD photodiode yields one of the highest FOMs among all previously reported solution-processed nontoxic semiconductors comprising organics, perovskites, and CQDs in the NIR wavelength range.

Regiospecific Incorporation of Acetylene Linker in High‐Electron Mobility Dimerized Acceptors for Organic Solar Cells with High Efficiency (18.8%) and Long 1‐Sun Lifetime (> 5000 h)

Abstract The commercialization of organic solar cells (OSCs) requires both high power conversion efficiency (PCE) and long‐term stability. However, the lifetime of the OSCs containing small‐molecule acceptors (SMA) should be significantly enhanced. In this study, a series of planarity‐controlled is developed, high electron mobility dimerized SMAs (DSMAs) and realize OSCs with high‐performance (PCE = 18.8%) and high‐stability ( t 80% lifetime = 5380 h under 1‐Sun illumination). An acetylene linker with a planar triple bond is designed for dimerization of SMA units to afford the high backbone planarity necessary to achieve high crystallinity and electron mobility. To further engineer the molecular conformation and electron mobility of the DSMAs, different regioisomers of a Y‐based SMA are dimerized to yield three regioisomerically distinct DSMAs, denoted as DYA‐I, DYA‐IO, and DYA‐O, respectively. It is found that the crystallinity, electron mobility, and glass transition temperature of the DSMAs gradually increase in the order of DYA‐O, DYA‐IO, and DYA‐I, which, in turn, enhance the PCE and device stability of the resulting OSCs; DYA‐O (PCE = 16.45% and t 80% lifetime = 3337 h) < DYA‐IO (PCE = 17.54% and t 80% lifetime = 4255 h) < DYA‐I (PCE = 18.83% and t 80% lifetime = 5380 h).

Polythiophene-based terpolymers with modulated aggregation behaviors for high-performance organic solar cells with 16.6% efficiency

Polythiophenes (PTs) are an attractive class of polymer donors (PDs) for organic solar cells (OSCs) owing to their relatively simple structures and scalable synthesis. Herein, a series of chlorinated thiazole-incorporated PT terpolymers are designed and high-performance OSCs with a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 16.6% are demonstrated. By incorporating two different units, 3,3'-difluoro-2,2'-bithiophene (T2F2) and thieno[3,2-b]thiophene (TT), the aggregation properties of the terpolymers (PTz-FX; X = 0, 30, 50, 70, and 100, where X represents the mole percentage of T2F2 to total T2F2 +TT) are modulated. Among the PTz-FX series, PTz-F70 is found to be the optimal P D because its suitably tuned aggregation property leads to an optimized blend morphology with well-developed crystalline structures and donor–acceptor intermixed domains. The balanced morphology not only promotes charge generation/transport but also suppresses charge recombination in OSC devices. Thus, the PTz-F70-based OSCs achieve the highest PCE (16.6%), outperforming the OSCs based on PTz-FX with extremely strong (PTz-F100, PCE = 14.7%) or weak (PTz-F0, PCE = 12.0%) aggregation properties. The PCE of the PTz-F70-based OSCs is one of the highest performances among PT-based binary OSCs. Finally, this study highlights the importance of controlling the aggregation property of PTs for achieving high-performance PT-based OSCs.

Fast Near-Infrared Photodetection Using III–V Colloidal Quantum Dots

Colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) are promising materials for infrared (IR) light detection due to their tunable bandgap and their solution processing; however, to date, the time response of CQD IR photodiodes is inferior to that provided by Si and InGaAs. It is reasoned that the high permittivity of II–VI CQDs leads to slow charge extraction due to screening and capacitance, whereas III–Vs—if their surface chemistry can be mastered—offer a low permittivity and thus increase potential for high-speed operation. In initial studies, it is found that the covalent character in indium arsenide (InAs) leads to imbalanced charge transport, the result of unpassivated surfaces, and uncontrolled heavy doping. Surface management using amphoteric ligand coordination is reported, and it is found that the approach addresses simultaneously the In and As surface dangling bonds. The new InAs CQD solids combine high mobility (0.04 cm 2 V -1 s -1 ) with a 4× reduction in permittivity compared to PbS CQDs. Finally, the resulting photodiodes achieve a response time faster than 2 ns—the fastest photodiode among previously reported CQD photodiodes—combined with an external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 30% at 940 nm.

Effect of the Selective Halogenation of Small Molecule Acceptors on the Blend Morphology and Voltage Loss of High-Performance Solar Cells

Herein, the impacts of the selective halogenation at two different positions of dicyanomethylene-3-indanone (IC) end groups and inner side chains of small molecular acceptors (SMAs) on the P D :SMA interfacial interactions, blend morphology, and resulting photovoltaic properties are described. In this study, four different SMAs (A1, A2, A3, and A4) with the same molecular backbone, but with different degrees of halogenation, are synthesized. The IC end groups on the backbones of the A1 and A3, and A2 and A4 SMAs are chlorinated and fluorinated, respectively; in addition, 6-phenoxyhexyl inner side chains of the A3 and A4 are chlorinated. The SMAs are paired with a chlorinated PBDT-Cl PD to construct organic solar cells (OSCs). The PBDT-Cl:A4-based OSC exhibits the highest power conversion efficiency of 17.2%, outperforming the PBDT-Cl:A1-(13.3%), PBDT-Cl:A2-(15.6%), and PBDT-Cl:A3-based OSC (16.5%). The Cl atoms on the side chains in the A3 and A4 SMAs enhance the molecular/energetic interactions at the P D :SMA interfaces and improve the blend morphology in terms of domain purity and spacing. These effects lead to the improved fill factors and reduced voltage loss of the PBDT-Cl:A3- and PBDT-Cl:A4-based OSCs. This study demonstrates the importance of appropriate halogenation of SMAs in optimizing the blend morphology, reducing voltage loss, and improving OSC performance.
