Solid-State Syntheses, Crystallographic Spatial Disorders, Thermal Behaviors, and Bandgaps of Hybrid Organic-Inorganic Manganese Halides: A2Mn(Cl/Br)4 (A = NH4+, C(NH2)3+, & C3H4N2+)

By systematically optimizing solid-state synthesis via the concerted use of differential scanning calorimetry and in-situ variable-temperature X-ray diffraction, we report the discovery of four new hybrid organic-inorganic manganese halides A2Mn(Cl/Br)4 (A = NH4+, C(NH2)3+, C3H4N2+), with emphasis on how the organic fragment geometry, polarity, and electron-donating properties influence crystallographic spatial disorders, thermal behaviors, and optical band gaps. With a nonpolar tetrahedral cation, as in (NH4)2MnCl4 (P21/c, mP30) or (NH4)2MnBr4 (C2/c, mC180), the direct optical bandgaps (4.36–4.28 eV) are wider than those with an organic nonpolar planar geometry, as in (C(NH2)3)2MnBr4 (P21/c, mP300, 4.07 eV), or an organic polar planar geometry, as in (C3H4N2+)2MnBr4 (I41/a, tI384, 4.05 eV). Furthermore, the organic components affect the spatial arrangement and dimensionality of the resulting inorganic frameworks comprised of Mn(Cl/Br)6 octahedra, with varying distortions, or spatially disordered MnBr4 tetrahedra. These resulting trends, coupled with the systematic investigation into synthesis, and the motivation behind elucidating the nuanced role of the organic cation, altogether expand upon the phase-space of hybrid materials beyond perovskites and demonstrate the potential for a rational design of hybrid materials with tailored optoelectronic functionalities for advanced energy applications.

Application of Ibuprofen Sodium Dihydrate for Thermochemical Energy Storage

Thermochemical energy storage (TCES) offers a transformative approach to address grid instability by harnessing reversible chemical reactions for efficient heat storage and release. Here, we introduce pharmaceutical organic salt hydrates as a class of materials with exceptional performance for low-grade waste heat recovery. We demonstrate ibuprofen sodium dihydrate (ISD) as an example organic hydrate exhibiting a dehydration temperature range of 60-110 °C and a remarkable dehydration enthalpy of up to 59.5 kJ/mol of water, ideally suited for capturing industrial and residential waste heat. Using rigorous multimodal characterization, including thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, in-situ FTIR, in-situ PXRD, and NMR, we demonstrate ISD's superior thermal, chemical, and structural stability over 150 hydration-dehydration cycles, achieving an unprecedented cycling efficiency of ~99.9%. Compared to conventional inorganic salt hydrates like strontium chloride hexahydrate and calcium oxalate monohydrate, ISD showcases enhanced durability without deliquescence or pulverization, even under high-humidity conditions. In-situ analyses confirm the transition from ISD to ibuprofen sodium anhydrous (ISA) proceeds with structural reorganization, thereby combining the dehydration mechanism with phase transitions, resulting in higher energy storage capacity. Microstructural analyses reveal that repeated water intercalation and structural transitions aid in creating significant porosity that enhances water transport kinetics, further improving the hydration/dehydration performance. By combining the phase change and chemical dehydration mechanisms, ISD paves the way for designing a new class of organic salt hydrates, offering tunable properties to meet diverse thermal energy storage demands and supporting sustainable grid resilience.

FeSi 4 P 4 and CoSi 3 P 3 : Hidden Gems of Ternary Tetrel Pnictides with Outstanding Nonlinear Optical Properties

Metal silicon phosphides have shown promise as nonlinear optical materials. To be practically useful and cheap, earth-abundant 3d transition metals are preferred over their scarcer and more expensive 4d and 5d counterparts. Here, we developed a synthetic method to produce polycrystalline bulk powders and millimeter-sized single crystals of ternary compounds FeSi 4 P 4 and CoSi 3 P 3 . Both studied compounds have noncentrosymmetric and chiral crystal structures with ordered Si/P arrangements as was confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and solid-state NMR. Despite the presence of the transition metal, FeSi 4 P 4 and CoSi 3 P 3 are semiconductors with direct band gaps of 1.3 and 1.6 eV, respectively, indicating low-spin d 6 electronic configuration for octahedral Fe 2+ and Co 3+ . Relative to reported sulfide materials, FeSi 4 P 4 and CoSi 3 P 3 small band gap semiconductors demonstrate an outstanding combination of second-harmonic generation (SHG) activity and laser damage threshold (LDT). Both studied materials are phase-matchable with a 2.09 μm laser and not only exhibit 2.5–3.0 times stronger SHG signal than that of the state-of-the-art AgGaS 2 standard but also demonstrate an LDT response of 2.3–2.5 times higher than that of AgGaS 2 (at 1.09 μm laser with a pulse width of 10 ns)-which is unprecedented for small band gap semiconductors.

Accelerating Computational Materials Discovery with Machine Learning and Cloud High-Performance Computing: from Large-Scale Screening to Experimental Validation

High-throughput computational materials discovery has promised significant acceleration of the design and discovery of new materials for many years. Despite a surge in interest and activity, the constraints imposed by large-scale computational resources present a significant bottleneck. Furthermore, examples of large-scale computational discovery carried through experimental validation remain scarce, especially for materials with product applicability. In this paper, we demonstrate how this vision became reality by first combining state-of-the-art artificial intelligence (AI) models and traditional physics-based models on cloud high performance computing (HPC) resources to quickly navigate through more than 32 million candidates and predict around half a million potentially stable materials. Focusing on solid-state electrolytes for battery applications, our discovery pipeline further identified 18 promising candidates with new compositions and rediscovered a decade’s worth of collective knowledge in the field as a byproduct. By employing around one thousand virtual machines in the cloud, this process took less than 80 hours. We then synthesized and experimentally characterized the structures and conductivities of our top candidates, the Na x Li 3-x YCl 6 (0.5 ≤ x ≤ 2.5) series, demonstrating the potential of these compounds to serve as solid electrolytes. Additional candidate materials are currently under experimental investigation that could offer more examples of the computational discovery of new phases of Li- and Na-conducting solid electrolytes. We believe this unprecedented approach of synergistically integrating AI models and cloud HPC not only accelerates materials discovery but also showcases the potency of AI-guided experimentation in unlocking transformative scientific breakthroughs with real-world applications.

Probing of the Noninnocent Role of P in Transition-Metal Phosphide Hydrogen Evolution Reaction Electrocatalysts via Replacement with Electropositive Si

Transition-metal phosphides (TMP) have been identified as promising electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Despite recent computational investigations identifying P sites as being crucial for hydrogen adsorption, the main mode of optimization for TMPs has been focused on changing the metal sites. Here, to experimentally verify computational hypotheses and provide a route for HER electrocatalyst optimization via ternary compounds, we performed systematic experimental studies of structurally related NiSi 1–x P x phases, namely, Ni 2 SiP, Ni 5 Si 2 P 3 , Ni 3 SiP 2 , and Ni 7 Si 2 P 5 , which are ordered derivatives of the NiSi structure (Pnma, oP-8, MnP structure type). We found that P played a significant role in modulating HER activity in an acidic electrolyte because the incorporation of P in NiSi reduced the overpotential at current density j = 10 mA/cm 2 from η 10 = 529 mV (NiSi) to η 10 = 97 mV (Ni 2 SiP). Ni 2 SiP outperformed the current state-of-the-art Ni5P4 electrocatalyst prepared and studied in identical conditions both in terms of activity and stability, which is attributed to the presence of covalent Ni–Si bonding in the structure. Within the family of ternary Ni–Si–P compounds, electrocatalytic activity correlates with the number of Ni-3d states at the Fermi energy.

Pseudo-Polymorphism in Layered FeS Intercalates: A Competition between Charged and Neutral Guest Species

Systematic synthesis studies of the formation of tetrahedral FeS-ethylenediamine intercalates resulted in the synthesis of a new compound, [Fe 9.4(2) S 10 ][Fe(en) 3 ] 0.6(1) ·en 0.9 ( 3 ). The composition and complex crystal structure were determined based on a synergistic combination of elemental composition, decomposition behavior, high-resolution synchrotron X-ray diffraction and total scattering, 57 Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy, and electron diffraction. The structural model was derived based on a systematic comparison to the previously reported structures [Fe 8 S 10 ][Fe(en) 3 ] 1 ·en 0.5 and tetragonal FeS. The new compound has flat Fe 9.4 S 10 layers, analogous to those in superconducting binary FeS. In the crystal structure of [Fe 9.4 S 10 ][Fe(en) 3 ] 0.6 ·en 0.9 , the interlayer space is occupied by [Fe(en) 3 ] 2+ complexes and neutral ethylenediamine molecules in a ~2:3 ratio. Interlayer species are not randomly oriented but ordered as evidenced by superstructural diffraction peaks in both high-resolution X-ray diffraction and electron diffraction patterns. Magnetic studies reveal no superconducting transition down to 2 K, indicating that the presence of minute amounts (~6%) of iron vacancies at the Fe-S layer in [Fe 9.4 S 10 ][Fe(en) 3 ] 0.6 ·en 0.9 is still sufficient to shift the position of the Fermi level resulting in an adjustment of the properties. Here, our work shows the importance of detailed characterization of the crystal structure of intercalated compounds to understand the origin of the observed properties and develop proper structure–property relationships.

Two-Dimensional and Three-Dimensional Tetrel-Arsenide Frameworks Templated by Li and Cs Cations

Two new ternary tetrel pnictide phases, Li 1.08 Ge 4.92 As 7 and Cs 0.11 Zn 0.05 Si 0.95 As, have been synthesized. Both compounds crystallize in new structure types, which demonstrate the flexibility of Ge(Si)–As layers when accommodating electropositive cations of various sizes. Li 1.08 Ge 4.92 As 7 displays a Ge-As layer motif that has not been observed in ternary Ge-As systems, while Cs 0.11 Zn 0.05 Si 0.95 As exhibits a 3D framework composed of fragments of the 2D parent-phase SiAs. For Li 1.08 Ge 4.92 As 7 , a combination of computational modeling and solid-state 7 Li MAS NMR was used to establish the correct crystal structure with one mixed occupied Ge/Li site. The compositions of the phases were confirmed through energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Transport properties and UV–Vis spectroscopy reveal both reported compounds to be semiconductors. Cs 0.11 Zn 0.05 Si 0.95 As shows high thermal stability with congruent melting at 1300 K and an exceptionally low thermal conductivity of 0.5 W m –1 K –1 at 300 K. Temperature-dependent Li-ion hopping dynamics in Li 1.08 Ge 4.92 As 7 was characterized using 7 Li solid-state NMR.

Cover Feature: New Noncentrosymmetric Tetrel Pnictides Composed of Square-Planar Gold(I) with Peculiar Bonding (Chem. Eur. J. 26/2021)

Compared to common types of Au(I) coordination, such as linear, trigonal planar, and tetrahedral units observed in extended solids, the square planar coordination is rare. Au(I)relia, shown in the cover image, exhibits the 3-centered bonding of Au-Tt-Au and Au-Pn-Au (on her feathers), square planar cis-[AuTt2Pn2] units (her pendant), and linear …-Au-Au-Au-… chains (her legs) that are characteristic of the novel equiatomic AuSiAs, AuGeP, and AuGeAs compounds. The image was created by designer Grant Luhmann.

Crystal Structure and Properties of Layered Pnictides BaCuSi2Pn3 (Pn = P, As)

Two novel layered compounds BaCuSi 2 Pn 3 (Pn = P, As) adopting new structure types are reported. As revealed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, both compounds are composed of unique Cu–Si–Pn layers featuring CuPn 3 and Si 2 Pn 6 structural motifs found in other archetypal pnictide materials. The stacking of the isostructural Cu–Si–Pn layers is different for phosphide and arsenide compounds. Synthesis from elements aided by in situ synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction resulted in the obtainment of bulk powders with a minimized amount of admixtures. Experimentally measured physical properties of BaCuSi 2 As 3 unexpectedly showed metal-like behavior at temperatures above 15 K, despite the fact that density functional theory calculations predict a small band gap of 0.4 eV. BaCuSi 2 As 3 exhibits ultralow thermal conductivity, which can be explained by the combination of a layered crystal structure with alternating covalent and ionic bonding, which feature rattling of Cu atoms similar to that in tetrahedrites.

New Noncentrosymmetric Tetrel Pnictides Composed of Square‐Planar Gold(I) with Peculiar Bonding

Abstract Three novel isostructural equiatomic gold tetrel pnictides, AuSiAs, AuGeP, and AuGeAs, were synthesized and characterized. These phases crystallize in the noncentrosymmetric (NCS) monoclinic space group Cc (no. 9), featuring square‐planar Au within cis ‐[AuTt 2 Pn 2 ] units (Tt=tetrel, Si, Ge; Pn=pnictogen, P, As). This is in drastic contrast to the structure of previously reported AuSiP, which exhibits typical linear coordination of Au with Si and P. Chemical bonding analysis through the electron localization function suggests covalent two‐center two‐electron Tt−Pn bonds, and three‐center Au−Tt−Au and Au−Pn−Au bonds with 1.6 e − per bond. X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies support the covalent and nonionic nature of Au−Pn and Au−Tt bonds. The title materials were found to be n ‐type narrow‐gap semiconductors or semimetals, with nearly temperature‐independent electrical resistivities and low thermal conductivities. A combination of the semimetallic properties with tunable NCS structure provides opportunities for the development of materials based on gold tetrel pnictides.
