Starshade Design for Occulter Based Exoplanet Missions

We present a lightweight starshade design that delivers the requisite profile figure accuracy with a compact stowed volume that permits launching both the occulter system (starshade and spacecraft) and a 1 to 2m-class telescope system on a single existing launch vehicle. Optimal figure stability is achieved with a very stiff and mass-efficient deployable structure design that has a novel configuration. The reference design is matched to a 1.1m telescope and consists of a 15m diameter inner disc and 24 flower-like petals with 7.5m length. The total tip-to-tip diameter of 30m provides an inner working angle of 75 mas. The design is scalable to accommodate larger telescopes and several options have been assessed. A proof of concept petal is now in production at JPL for deployment demonstrations and as a testbed for developing additional elements of the design. Future plans include developing breadboard and prototype hardware of increasing fidelity for use in demonstrating critical performance capabilities such as deployed optical edge profile figure tolerances and stability thereof.

Aquarius Reflector Surface Temperature Monitoring Test and Analysis

The presentation addresses how to infer the front side temperatures for the Aquarius L-band reflector based upon backside measurement sites. Slides discussing the mission objectives and design details are at the same level found on typical project outreach websites and in conference papers respectively. The test discussion provides modest detail of an ordinary thermal balance test using mockup hardware. The photographs show an off-Lab vacuum chamber facility with no compromising details.

Effect of particle size in composite materials on radiative properties

A numerical model for the radiative properties of a composite material composed of ceramic oxide fibers and particles was developed and used to determine the effect of the size parameters of the two components. Results include the computed phase functions for the zirconia and silica composite materials, showing the location and strength of the strong forward-scattering peak. The phase function and the optical properties of the composite are strongly influenced by the particle size parameter through the fiber or particle diameter and the wavelength, the material, and the mixture fraction.

Advanced particulate fibrous composite for thermal control of re-entry vehicles

Combining the selectively reflective properties of particulate reflective coatings with the low density and high temperature capability of ceramic fibrous materials results in a novel composite material with useful optical properties. Numerical predictions of the radiative properties of zirconia and silica composites for a range of mixture fractions and wavelengths show the improvements attainable by dispersing spheres throughout a fiber matrix. The radiation conductance is controlled by the percentage of spheres in the composite. Results show that specific wavelength domains are controlled by either the spheres or the fibers, so the optical properties can be tailored for reentry applications.
