Fourfold Clusters of Rovibrational Energies in H2Te Studied With an Ab Initio Potential Energy Function

We report an ab initio investigation of the cluster effect (i.e., the formation of nearly degenerate, four member groups of rotation-vibration energy levels at higher J and K(sub a). values) in the H2Te molecule. The potential energy function has been calculated ab initio at a total of 334 molecular geometries by means of the CCSD(T) method where the (1s-4f) core electrons of Te were described by an effective core potential. The values of the potential energy function obtained cover the region up to around 10,000/cm above the equilibrium energy. On the basis of the ab initio potential, the rotation-vibration energy spectra of H2Te-130 and its deuterated isotopomers have been calculated with the MORBID (Morse Oscillator Rigid Bender Internal Dynamics) Hamiltonian and computer program. In particular, we have calculated the rotational energy manifolds for J less than or = 40 in the vibrational ground state, the upsilon(sub 2) state, the "first triad" (the upsilon(sub l)/upsilon(sub 3)/2upsilon(sub 2) interacting vibrational states), and the "second triad" (the upsilon(sub 1) + upsilon(sub 2/upsilon(sub 2) + upsilon(sub 3)/3upsilon(sub 2) states) of H2Te-130. We find that the cluster formation in H2Te is very similar to those of of H2Se and H2S, which we have studied previously. However, contrary to semiclassical predictions, we do not determine any significant displacement of the clusters towards lower J values relative to H2Se. Hence the experimental observation of the cluster states in H2Te will be at least as difficult as in H2Se.

The Molecular Structure of cis-FONO

The molecular structure of cis-FONO has been determined with the CCSD(T) correlation method using an spdf quality basis set. In agreement with previous coupled-cluster calculations but in disagreement with density functional theory, cis-FONO is found to exhibit normal bond distances. The quadratic and cubic force fields of cis-FONO have also been determined in order to evaluate the effect of vibrational averaging on the molecular geometry. Vibrational averaging is found to increase bond distances, as expected, but it does not affect the qualitative nature of the bonding. The CCSD(T)/spdf harmonic frequencies of cis-FONO support our previous assertion that a band observed at 1200 /cm is a combination band (upsilon(sub 3) + upsilon(sub 4)), and not a fundamental.

A Coupled-Cluster Study of the Molecular Structure, Vibrational Spectrum, and Relative Energies of the XCN and XNC (X=F, Cl) Isomers

The XCN and XNC (X=F, Cl) isomers have been investigated using the CCSD and CCSD(T) methods in conjunction with a TZ2P basis set. Equilibrium geometries, dipole moments, harmonic frequencies, IR intensities and relative energies have been evaluated. The CCSD(T) geometries and vibrational frequencies for the XCN isomers are in good agreement with the available experimental data. The CCSD(T) results for FCN and FNC are in good agreement with the CEPA calculations of Botshwina et al., with the exception of the energy difference, which the CEPA method underestimates by about 1.2 kcal/mol. FCN and CICN are shown to be lower in energy than the FNC and ClNC isomers by 69.511.0 and 42.711.0 kcal/mol (0 K), respectively.

Computed Minimum Energy Pathway for Isomerization in Ketene

A minimum energy pathway for interchange of the CH groups in ketene via a C2v structure has been obtained using complete active space self consistent field (CASSCF) derivative methods with a polarized valence double zeta basis set to define the reaction pathway followed by multi-reference internally contracted configuration interaction (ICCI) calculations with a [3s3p2d/3s2p] basis set to determine the energetics. Qualitatively, the C2v structure is found to be a shallow minimum on the potential energy surface separated from ketene by a small barrier (0.2 kcal/mol), a second minimum, and a larger barrier (3.0 kcal/mol). The minimum energy pathway leading from the C2v minimum to ketene starts by simultaneous rotation of the farther CH group out of the plane and away from the oxygen followed by increase of the CCO angle and subsequent 1,2-migration of the H of the nearer CH group toward the carbon of the farther CH group.

Ab Initio Calculations of Singlet and Triplet Excited States of Chlorine Nitrate and Nitric Acid

Ab initio calculations of vertical excitations to singlet and triplet excited states of chlorine nitrate and nitric acid are reported. The nature of the electronic transitions are examined by decomposing the difference density into the sum of detachment and attachment densities. Counterparts for the three lowest singlet excited states of nitric acid survive relatively unperturbed in chlorine nitrate, while other low-lying singlet states of chlorine nitrate appear to be directly dissociative in the ClO chromophore. These results suggest an assignment of the two main peaks in the experimental chlorine nitrate absorption spectrum. In addition, triplet vertical excitations and the lowest optimized triplet geometries of both molecules are studied.

The (FHCl)- molecular anion - Structural aspects, global surface, and vibrational eigenspectrum

State of the art ab initio electronic structure methods have been used to investigate the (FHCl)- molecular anion. It is proposed that the geometric structure and binding energies of the complex are r(e)(H-F) = 0.963 +/- 0.003 A, R(e)(H-Cl) = 1.925 +/- 0.015 A, and D0(HF + Cl(-)) = 21.8 +/- 0.4 kcal/mol. A Morokuma decomposition of the ion-molecular bonding give the following electrostatic, polarization, exchange repulsion, dispersion, and charge-transfer plus higher-order mixing components of the vibrationless complexation energy: -27.3, -5.2, +18.3, -4.5, and -5.0 kcal/mol, respectively. A couples cluster single and doubles global surface is constructed from 208 and 228 energy points for linear and bent configurations, respectively, these being fit to rms errors of only 3.9 and 9.3/cm, respectively, below 8000/cm. Converged J = 0 and J = 1 variational eigenstates of the (FHCl)- surface to near the HF + Cl(-) dissociation threshold are determined. The fundamental vibrational frequencies are found to be nu1 = 247/cm, nu2 = 876/cm, and nu3 = 2884/cm. The complete vibrational eigenspectrum is analyzed.

Accurate ab initio quartic force fields for the ions HCO(+) and HOC(+)

The quartic force fields of HCO(+) and HOC(+) have been computed using augmented coupled cluster methods and basis sets of spdf and spdfg quality. Calculations on HCN, CO, and N2 have been performed to assist in calibrating the computed results. Going from an spdf to an spdfg basis shortens triple bonds by about 0.004 A, and increases the corresponding harmonic frequency by 10-20/cm, leaving bond distances about 0.003 A too long and triple bond stretching frequencies about 5/cm too low. Accurate estimates for the bond distances, fundamental frequencies, and thermochemical quantities are given. HOC(+) lies 37.8 +/- 0.5 kcal/mol (0 K) above HCO(+); the classical barrier height for proton exchange is 76.7 +/- 1.0 kcal/mol.

Ab initio calculation of a global potential, vibrational energies, and wave functions for HCN/HNC, and a simulation of the (A-tilde)-(X-tilde) emission spectrum

A potential energy surface for the HCN/HNC system which is a fit to extensive, high-quality ab initio, coupled-cluster calculations is presented. All HCN and HNC states with energies below the energy of the first delocalized state are reported and characterized. Vibrational transition energies are compared with all available experimental data on HCN and HNC, including high CH-overtone states up to 23,063/cm. A simulation of the (A-tilde)-(X-tilde) stimulated emission pumping (SEP) spectrum is also reported, and the results are compared to experiment. Franck-Condon factors are reported for odd bending states of HCN, with one quantum of vibrational angular momentum, in order to compare with the recent assignment by Jonas et al. (1992), on the basis of axis-switching arguments of a number of previously unassigned states in the SEP spectrum.

Open-shell coupled-cluster theory

An efficient formulation of a recently proposed open-shell singles and doubles coupled-cluster (OCCSD) method is presented. This formulation is in terms of spatial orbital one- and two-electron integrals. Our new OCCSD method is based on 'symmetric spin orbitals' and is thus symmetric (or antisymmetric) in the spin indices. It therefore contains about half the number of independent parameters in the coupled-cluster wave function compared to other open-shell CCSD methods. It is shown that the formulation presented here contains less than half the number of n exp 6 steps (where n is the number of molecular orbitals) of other recently proposed open-shell CCSD methods. A new approach by which amplitudes in our method may be compared with amplitudes in a previous OCCSD method is examined.

The protonation of N2O reexamined - A case study on the reliability of various electron correlation methods for minima and transition states

The protonation of N2O and the intramolecular proton transfer in N2OH(+) are studied using various basis sets and a variety of methods, including second-order many-body perturbation theory (MP2), singles and doubles coupled cluster (CCSD), the augmented coupled cluster (CCSD/T/), and complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) methods. For geometries, MP2 leads to serious errors even for HNNO(+); for the transition state, only CCSD/T/ produces a reliable geometry due to serious nondynamical correlation effects. The proton affinity at 298.15 K is estimated at 137.6 kcal/mol, in close agreement with recent experimental determinations of 137.3 +/- 1 kcal/mol.

Accurate Quartic Force Fields and Vibrational Frequencies for HCN and HNC

The quartic force fields of HCN and HNC are determined using atomic natural orbital one-particle basis sets of spdf/spd and spdfg/spdf quality in conjunction with the CCSD(T) electron correlation method (singles and doubles coupled-cluster theory plus a perturbational estimate of the effects of connected triple excitations). The HCN force field is in good agreement with a recent experimentally derived force field and also with the force field recently computed by Wong and Bacskay. On the basis of the good agreement obtained for HCN, it is argued that the ab initio quartic force field for HNC is superior to a prior force field derived from experiment. The harmonic frequencies of HNC are predicted to be 3822 +/- 10,472 +/- 5, and 2051 +/-10/cm for omega1, omega2, and omega3, respectively; the experimentally derived values are above these values and fall outside the estimated uncertainties. Using the quartic force field, spectroscopic constants are predicted for HNC based on a vibrational second-order perturbation theory analysis. It is also asserted that the gas-phase fundamental v(sub 3) for HNC is slightly lower than the matrix isolation value. The range of validity of the quartic force fields is investigated by comparison of variational vibrational energies computed with the quartic force fields to those obtained from our recently reported global HCN/HNC potential energy surface and also to experimental data.

An open-shell restricted Hartree-Fock perturbation theory based on symmetric spin orbitals

A new open-shell perturbation theory is formulated in terms of symmetric spin orbitals. Only one set of spatial orbitals is required, thereby reducing the number of independent coefficients in the perturbed wavefunctions. For second order, the computational cost is shown to be similar to a closed-shell calculation. This formalism is therefore more efficient than the recently developed RMP, ROMP or RMP-MBPT theories. The perturbation theory described herein was designed to have a close correspondence with our recently proposed coupled-cluster theory based on symmetric spin orbitals. The first-order wavefunction contains contributions from only doubly excited determinants. Equilibrium structures and vibrational frequencies determined from second-order perturbation theory are presented for OH, NH, CH, 02, NH2 and CH2.

Ab initio study of the chlorine nitrate protonation reaction - Implications for loss of ClONO2 in the stratosphere

Ab initio quantum mechanical methods, including coupled-cluster theory, are used to determine the equilibrium geometries, dipole moments, and harmonic vibrational frequencies of ClONO2, NO2(+), and four isomers of protonated ClONO2. It was found that, for the equilibrium structures and harmonic frequencies of ClONO2, HOCl, and NO2(+), the highest-level theoretical predictions are consistent with the available experimental information concerning the reactions of ClONO2 and HOCl with HCl on the surface of polar stratospheric clouds (PSCs). The study supports a recent hypothesis that the reaction of ClONO2 on the surface of PSCs is proton catalyzed, although the mechanism is different.

Ab initio characterization of ClOOH - Implications for atmospheric chemistry

The equilibrium structure, dipole moment, harmonic vibrational frequencies, and infrared intensities of ClOOH are determined using the CCSD(T) (singles and doubles coupled-cluster theory plus a perturbational estimate of the effects of connected triple excitations) electronic structure method in conjunction with a TZ2P (triple xi plus double polarization) basis set. The heat of formation of CIOOH is determined (using two different isodesmic reactions) to be +1.5 +/- 1 kcal/mol at 0 K or +0.2 +/- 1 kcal/mol at 298.15 K. Using the computed heat of formation, we examined the stability of ClOOH with respect to the ClO + OH, ClOO + H, and HOO + Cl dissociation limits. Since ClOOH is found to be quite stable, it is argued that the chemistry of ClOOH should be included in any accurate modeling of the stratosphere.

Accurate Quartic Force Fields and Vibrational Frequencies for HCN and HNC

The quartic force fields of HCN and HNC are determined using atomic natural orbital one-particle basis sets of spdf/spd and spdfg/spdf quality in conjunction with the CCSD(T) electron correlation method (singles and doubles coupled-cluster theory plus a perturbation estimate of the effects of connected triple excitations). On the basis of the good agreement obtained for HCN, it is argued that the ab initio quartic force field for HNC is superior to a prior force field derived from experiment. Using the quartic force field, spectroscopic constants are predicted for HNC based on a vibrational second-order perturbation theory analysis. It is also asserted that the gas-phase fundamental nu(sub 3) for HNC is slightly lower than the matrix isolation value. The range of validity of the quartic force fields is investigated by comparison of variational vibrational energies computed with the quartic force fields to those obtained from our recently reported global HCN/HNC potential energy surface and also to experimental data.

Accurate ab initio quartic force fields for borane and BeH2

The quartic force fields of BH3 and BeH2 have been computed ab initio using an augmented coupled cluster (CCSD(T)) method and basis sets of spdf and spdfg quality. For BH3, the computed spectroscopic constants are in very good agreement with recent experimental data, and definitively confirm misassignments in some older work, in agreement with recent ab initio studies. Using the computed spectroscopic constants, the rovibrational partition function for both molecules has been constructed using a modified direct numerical summation algorithm, and JANAF-style thermochemical tables are presented.

An accurate ab initio quartic force field for ammonia

The quartic force field of ammonia is computed using basis sets of spdf/spd and spdfg/spdf quality and an augmented coupled cluster method. After correcting for Fermi resonance, the computed fundamentals and nu 4 overtones agree on average to better than 3/cm with the experimental ones except for nu 2. The discrepancy for nu 2 is principally due to higher-order anharmonicity effects. The computed omega 1, omega 3, and omega 4 confirm the recent experimental determination by Lehmann and Coy (1988) but are associated with smaller error bars. The discrepancy between the computed and experimental omega 2 is far outside the expected error range, which is also attributed to higher-order anharmonicity effects not accounted for in the experimental determination. Spectroscopic constants are predicted for a number of symmetric and asymmetric top isotopomers of NH3.

The form of spin orbitals for open-shell restricted Hartree-Fock reference functions

A new set of spin orbitals is proposed for single-reference correlation procedures based on an open-shell restricted Hartree-Fock (RHF) reference function. The spatial parts of the new spin orbitals are from an open-shell RHF calculation. These spin orbitals form a complete, orthonormal set. The RHF single determinant based on these spin orbitals is an S sub 2 eigenfunction, but a linear combination of S sub z eigenfunctions. The advantage of these spin orbitals is that equations for perturbation theory or coupled-cluster theory are symmetric in the spin indices and hence the number of independent parameters to be determined is dramatically reduced.
