A Pyrrole Modified 3,4‐Propylenedioxythiophene Conjugated Polymer as Hole Transport Layer for Efficient and Stable Perovskite Solar Cells

Despite the outstanding electric properties and cost-effectiveness of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) and its derivatives, their performance as hole transport layer (HTL) materials in conventional perovskite solar cells (PSCs) has lagged behind that of widely used spirobifluorene-based molecules or poly(triaryl amine). This gap is mainly from their poor solubility and energy alignment mismatch. In this work, the design and synthesis of a pyrrole-modified HTL (PPr) based on 3,4-propylenedioxythiophene (ProDOT) are presented for efficient and stable PSCs. As a result of the superior defects passivation ability, excellent contact with perovskite, enhanced hole extraction, and high hydrophobicity, the unencapsulated PPr-based PSCs showed the peak PCE of 21.49% and outstanding moisture stability (over 4000 h). This work highlights the potential application of ProDOT-based materials as HTL for PSCs and underscores the importance of the rational design of PEDOT and its derivatives.

Triplet Management at Ligand-Perovskite Interface to Enhanced Photovoltaics Performance

Aromatic organic molecules are widely used as passivators in perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Efforts have been devoted to improving the energy alignments, band edge states, and defect passivation functionalities. However, potential energy loss through triplet states in such conjugated molecules has not been investigated in the past. Here, we report the observation of charge transfer from FAPbI 3 to the triplet state of a pyrene (Pyr)-based cationic ligand. Such a potential loss channel can be suppressed via delicate triplet management in polycyclic aromatic compounds. Interestingly, a subtle structural modification from Pyr to the triphenylene (TP) core gave rise to shallower triplets that prohibit electron transfer from perovskites. This strategy has led to TP-passivated PSCs achieving an enhanced power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 24.69% from 23.10% in Pyr-passivated counterparts. Moreover, the devices retained above 80% initial PCE after 4000 h of light soaking, which likely benefited from the reduced triplet electron trapping at the ligand-perovskite interface.

One-Step Solution Patterning for Two-Dimensional Perovskite Nanoplate Arrays

Two-dimensional perovskite crystals have attracted significant attention for their diverse optoelectronic characteristics, owing to their superior semiconducting properties. However, the majority of studies to date have focused on single crystals, which pose challenges for integration into device arrays due to their incompatibility with selective growth or conventional lithography techniques. Here, a facile one-step solution process for synthesizing 2D perovskite crystal arrays is proposed through meniscus-guided coating on patterned substrates. Here we further utilized this method for the synthesis of lateral heterostructure nanoplate arrays. Six different 2D perovskite nanoplate arrays, including epitaxial heterostructures, are successfully realized. Optical and crystallographic characterizations show the high optical performance and crystallinity of the nanoplates. Moreover, this method is further employed to prepare high-performance 2D perovskite nanoplate photosensor arrays. This strategy can be utilized as a guideline for the fundamental investigation of optical properties and the development of high-performance optoelectronics of perovskite materials including photosensors and displays.

Reduced Energetic Disorders in Dion–Jacobson Perovskites for Efficient and Spectral Stable Blue LEDs

Metal halide perovskites have witnessed great success in green, red, and near-infrared light-emitting diodes (LEDs), yet blue LEDs still lag behind. Reducing undesired energetic disorders – broad n -phases and halide segregation – is considered as the most critical strategy to further improve the performances. Here, the study reports a newly designed and synthesized di-ammonium ligand with rigid π -conjugated rings and additional methyl groups to construct Dion–Jacobson (DJ) structure. Augmented coordination from the extra ammonium site and increased effective bulkiness from methyl groups lead to better distribution control over conventional mono-ammonium ligands. This enhances the radiative recombination of blue emissions in the film with homogeneous energy landscape and improved surface morphology, as evidenced by a series of imaging and mapping techniques. As a result, it demonstrates DJ perovskite LEDs (PeLEDs) with peak external quantum efficiencies of ≈4% at 484 nm and ≈11% at 494 nm, which are among the top reported for pure DJ phase-based PeLEDs in the corresponding wavelength regions. The results deepen the understanding of regulating energetic disorders in perovskite materials via molecular engineering.

Tailoring Molecular-Scale Contact at Perovskite/Polymeric Hole Transporting Material Interface for Efficient Solar Cells

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have delivered more than 25% of power conversion efficiency (PCE) and incorporating polymers as hole transporting layers (HTLs) can further enhance the stability of devices towards the goal of commercialization. Among various polymeric hole transporting materials, poly(triaryl amine) (PTAA) is one of the promising HTL candidates with good stability; however, the hydrophobicity of PTAA causes problematic interfacial contact with perovskite, limiting the device performance. Using molecular side-chain engineering, we successfully constructed a uniform two-dimensional (2D) perovskite interlayer with conjugated ligands, between three-dimensional (3D) perovskites and PTAA. Further, employing conjugated ligands as cohesive elements, perovskite/PTAA interfacial adhesion was significantly improved. As a result, the thin and lateral extended 2D/3D heterostructure enabled the as-fabricated PTAA-based PSCs to achieve a PCE of 23.7%, improved from the 18% of reference devices. Owing to the increased ion migration energy barrier and conformal 2D coating, unencapsulated devices with the new ligands exhibited both superior thermal stability under 60°C heating and moisture stability in ambient conditions.
