A practical approach for identifying various polarization behaviors of redox-stable electrodes in symmetrical solid oxide fuel cells

In symmetrical solid oxide fuel cells, comprehensively understanding the elementary reaction processes and the polarization behaviors of redox-stable electrode materials is critical for further optimization of the electrode performance. In this work, a systematical and practical approach, based on electrochemical impedance spectroscopy technology, is applied to identify the rate-limiting elementary reactions of the redox-stable electrodes. The feasibility of this proposed method is demonstrated in symmetrical solid oxide fuel cells with Sr 2 Fe 1.5 Mo 0.5 O 6-σ -Ce 0.9 Gd 0.1 O 1.95 as electrodes. Based on the characteristic frequency ranges and the experimental results tested under various fuel gas components, operating temperatures, and discharge current densities, the rate-limiting steps of the cathode are associated with the formation of adsorbed oxygen ions and the combination of oxygen ions and oxygen vacancies, while the rate-limiting steps of the anode are ascribed to the hydrogen dissociated adsorption and the steam desorption processes. This experimental and analysis framework can be straightforwardly extended to other electrode materials to unravel their electrochemical performance in detail.

Novel structured Sm 0.5 Sr 0.5 CoO 3-δ cathode for intermediate and low temperature solid oxide fuel cells

The performance of solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) can be significantly enhanced using nanostructured cathode obtained by infiltration/impregnation method. However, this method has been limited due to multi-step preparation process and instability of the obtained nanoscale catalyst under long-term operation. We report here a simple, cost-effective and reproducible approach to fabricate nanostructured Sm 0.5 Sr 0.5 CoO 3-δ (SSC) cathode with enhanced performance and stability. The SSC powders were prepared by a freeze-drying method through a combustion route using Pluronic F-127 as the template. The SSC freeze-drying powders have unique morphology and a significant phase change at 750 °C. The oxygen non-stoichiometry (δ) of the SSC powders is 0.18 at room temperature, while the δ values are 0.66, 0.75 and 0.90 at 600 °C, 700 °C and 800 °C, respectively. The novel structured SSC cathode was prepared by screen-printing and one-step sintering process using the freeze-drying SSC powders. Maximum cell power densities of 0.83 and 1.13 W cm -2 are achieved at 550 °C and 600 °C, respectively for single cells with the novel structured SSC cathode. Moreover, single cells show excellent stability at 600 °C under a current density of 600 mA cm -2 over 250 h. This work expands opportunities to exploit nanotechnology in a wide range of intermediate and low temperature energy conversion devices.

A novel equivalent circuit for GDC-based solid oxide cells considering the variations of cell resistances under load

Regarding the mixed ionic-electronic conductive electrolytes, there are several constant assumptions about cell resistances and transference numbers. In this work, the charge transport frameworks of mixed conductive SOCs are comprehensively illustrated. And the independent external current density is introduced into the equivalent circuit for considering the variations of cell resistances under load. The updated expressions of cell resistances together with transference numbers are deduced rigorously based on the equivalent circuit. Electrolyte-supported NiO-GDC/GDC/LSCF cells are tested, and the experimental results validate the variations of cell resistances, especially for the polarization resistance. The comparisons show that electron hole resistances together with transference number calculated by the updated expressions are larger than those obtained by Liu’s method. More accurate transference number and cell resistances under load can be achieved by using the proposed method in this study.
