DOE HFTO H2IQ Hour: NREL ARIES Flatirons Campus MW-Scale Hydrogen System Research

This webinar will highlight the status and initial performance of the grid-integrated megawatt-scale hydrogen electrolysis, compression, storage, and fuel cell generator system at NREL's Flatirons campus. The presentation will also include information about on-going research using this capability as well as future areas of research asset development.

Hydrogen Production, Grid Integration, and Scaling for the Future

The project will explore near and long-term visions towards the commercialization of grid integrated electrolysis systems to inform deployment across the planning, procurement, and operation stages of hydrogen production on the grid. It will leverage NREL's state-of-the-art 1.25 MW polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) electrolyzer system to characterize system performance in relevant scenarios, also creating a digital twin for emulation in the Advanced Research on Integrated Energy Systems (ARIES) virtual environment and performing hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing of pilot scale, decentralized, and centralized hydrogen systems.

Megawatt-Scale Low Temperature Electrolyzer Research Capability

The development and installation of a flexible low-temperature electrolyzer research capability at the multi-MW scale with integrated renewables will help lower the cost barrier to entry for electrolyzer manufactures needing at scale system and stack evaluation and enable more electrolyzer manufactures to accelerate to commercialization with building block scale demonstration and validation. This NREL capability represents a DOE HFTO investment to support the $1B DOE Clean Hydrogen Electrolysis Program working to achieve the Hydrogen Shot goal of $1 for 1 kg hydrogen in 1 decade, lower greenhouse gas emissions and criteria pollutants, build clean energy infrastructure, and provide pathways to private sector uptake.

ARIES / Flatirons Facility - Hydrogen System Capability Buildout

Under the "Advanced Research on Integrated Energy Systems" (ARIES) initiative, hydrogen system capabilities including a MW-scale electrolyzer, storage system, and MW-scale fuel cell generator will be designed and commissioned at NREL's Flatirons Campus. This hydrogen infrastructure will support H2@Scale goals by enabling integrated systems R&D to study the science of scaling for hydrogen energy systems. The system is designed with flexibility to provide a testbed to demonstrate systems integration, grid services, energy storage, direct renewable hydrogen production, and innovative end use applications (e.g. HD transportation, natural gas blending, etc.).

Optimal Wind Turbine Design for H2 Production

This presentation covers the annual progress of the H2@Scale project "Optimal Wind Turbine Design for H2 Production". This project investigates the outcomes of designing a wind turbine for hydrogen focused objectives as opposed to the traditional minimization of cost or maximization of energy production. Preliminary results show that significant reductions in the levelized cost of hydrogen can be achieved using hydrogen-specific turbines.
