Updates of MERRA-2 Data and Services at NASA GES DISC

Over40 years of NASA climate reanalysis datasets from the Modern-Era Retrospective analysis for Research and Applications, Version 2 (MERRA-2) are available at the NASA Goddard Earth Sciences Data and Information Services Center (GES DISC). In addition to being used in traditional weather and climate research, MERRA-2 is also widely used in application studies of, e.g., wind and solar energy, air quality and health, food and drought, and heat waves. Two new MERRA-2 datasets were recently added at the GES DISC: (1) climate statistics derived fromMERRA-2 daily data to assist in the analysis of extreme temperature and precipitation events and of large-scale meteorological patterns from 1980 to the present and (2) gridded satellite and conventional observations processed in the MERRA-2 system, along with key statistics derived from the data assimilation, to help better understand how the quality of observations directly affect there analysis data. The GES DISC focuses its efforts on continually improving existing data services and to develop new data tools to satisfy various user communities. The newly added features include the following: Time series service: This is a new service for MERRA-2 data, which enables the easy and fast access of long-term hourly or daily time series at a location for popular parameters. The data is saved in a single le in Ascii format with a user- friendly structure. New analytic functions in the subsetter interface: Options for downloading daily minimum and maximum values have been added into the subsetter interface, in addition to the existing daily mean option, for all MERRA-2 and MERRA sub-daily products. Data format conversion to GeoTIFF has been implemented. New variables in Giovanni: Most monthly variables have been integrated into Giovanni, GESDISC’s online visualization and analysis tool. Due to the large data volume, hourly variables were selected based on user requests. More online information: New MERRA-2 documentation has been added: Data How-To, Data in Action, and FAQ. This presentation overviews two new MERRA-2 datasets and illustrates the new features of data services through a number of case studies. MERRA-2 data and services can be found at: https://disc.gsfc.gov/datasets?

Atmospheric Infrared Sounder Version 7 Near-Real-Time Product and Imagery Released by NASA GES DISC

The NASA Goddard Earth Sciences Data and Information Services Center (GES DISC) has been the home of data processing, archive, and distribution services for data from the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) mission since its launch in 2002. The GES DISC provides service to both AIRS routine and Near Real-Time (NRT) products. The AIRS NRT products are an important element in the Land, Atmosphere Near real-time Capability for EOS (LANCE). In collaboration with AIRS Project, the GES DISC has just released products from the Version 7 algorithm. The new version algorithm provides significant improvements over the previous version. The most substantial advances are: improved consistency between day and night water vapor; improved total column ozone and temperature; improved infrared-only (IR-only) retrievals, especially in high latitude regions; an improved Stochastic Cloud Clearing Neural Network used as a first guess at the initial value in the iterative retrieval process; and removal of ambiguity in surface classification in the IR-only retrieval algorithm. In addition, the GES DISC produces AIRS NRT imagery. The AIRS NRT imagery are generated by mosaicking and mapping the available AIRS 6-minute retrieval granules to a global projection. The images are constantly refreshed when new granules are produced. The AIRS NRT Viewer and LANCE Worldview provide visualization services to online users for AIRS NRT imagery. The data products used to generate this imagery include atmospheric temperature, humidity, precipitation, cloud, Dust Score, CO, and SO2. In this presentation, we will demonstrate visualization of the AIRS NRT imagery from the new Version 7, and demonstrate some improvements over the previous version. Progress on improving the AIRS NRT imagery, a collaboration project with the AIRS Applications Development Team at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), will also be presented.

Senteniel-6 Radio Occultation Product Released by NASA GES DISC to Supplement Satellite Remote Sensing Datasets for PBL Study

The NASA Goddard Earth Sciences Data and Information Services Center (GES DISC) curates hyperspectral atmospheric sounder remote sensing and numerical model reanalysis datasets which have been utilized in the Planetary Boundary Layer (PBL) research and applications. The hyperspectral sounder remote-sensing datasets include the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) on the Aqua satellite to the Cross-track Infrared Sounder (CrIS) on Suomi--National Polar- orbiting Partnership (NPP) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration -20 (N NOAA-20)/ Joint Polar-orbiting Satellite System -1 (JPSS-1). The Modern-Era Retrospective analysis for Research and Applications Version 2 (MERRA-2) global reanalysis product provides a data record commencing in 1980. The sounder remote sensing and reanalysis datasets include temperature, water vapor, and trace gas profile down to the PBL, and also have a derived PBL height as well. A nearly 10-year (June 2006 to December 2015) seasonal and annual PBL height climatology dataset from COSMIC Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) radio occultation (RO) measurement is also available from the GES DISC. In collaboration with Sentinel-6 Project, the GES DISC is implementing curation activities for GNSS RO products from the Sentinel-6A/Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich satellite launched on November 21, 2020. Sentinel-6A RO products provide refractivity, temperature, and humidity profile with finer vertical resolution, leveraging PBL research and application as a supplement to the hyperspectral sounder remote sensing and reanalysis products. The public release of Sentinel- 6A RO products is scheduled for mid-October of 2021. In this presentation, we will introduce all Senitnel-6A products and services, and demonstrate use cases studying the PBL by combining these products with other GES DISC archived data products.

An Update on the Hydrological Land Surface Data and Services at NASA GES DISC

"The NASA Goddard Earth Sciences Data and Information Services Center (GES DISC) is one of twelve NASA Earth Observing System data centers that document, process, archive and distribute data from Earth science missions and related projects. The GES DISC hosts many hydrological land surface data products including North American Land Data Assimilation System (NLDAS), Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS), the Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET) Land Data Assimilation System (FLDAS), and assimilated-Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE). The Land Surface Model (LSM) products contain model output, including heat fluxes, rain, snow, soil temperature, soil moisture and runoff; and observational forcing data, including surface pressure, temperature, precipitation, downward shortwave and longwave radiation, humidity, and wind. The temporal resolution of the hydrology data at the GES DISC ranges from hourly to monthly and the spatial resolution 0.1 degree to 1.0 degree. The variability of Earth’s water and energy cycles can be characterized with these spatially and temporally consistent, and quality controlled hydrological land surface data. These data could support ongoing modeling activities, and help improve our understanding of land-surface-atmosphere interactions and their impact on climate. Over the years, new data is added, and older data is reprocessed and updated. This presentation provides a summary table of the hydrological data and discusses recent updates to the data and data services at the GES DISC. New data products include (1) GRACE Global Version 3.0 drought indicators and (2) FLDAS monthly global and Central Asia daily data. Reprocessed and updated products include (1) NLDAS Version 2.0 and (2) GRACE United States Version 4.0 drought indicators. Lastly, this presentation will discuss the opportunities for accessing some of our hydrology data from the cloud. As the hydrology land surface data is moved to the cloud, users can expect faster service for longer time series, notably the hydrology data rods time series service."

Multi-Decadal Nitrogen Dioxide and Derived Products from Satellites (MINDS) Datasets Released by NASA GES DISC and Their Applications for Air Quality

Nitrogen dioxide (NO2), a pervasive air pollutant, comes from vehicles, power plants, industrial emissions, and off-road sources such as construction or lawn and gardening equipment. The NASA Goddard Earth Sciences Data and Information Services Center (GES DISC) curates many remote sensing datasets with NO2 retrievals, which have been utilized for air quality research and applications. The remotely-sensed datasets include those generated by the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) on the Aura satellite, the TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) onboard the Copernicus Sentinel-5 Precursor (S5P), and the Ozone Mapping and Profiling Suite (OMPS) Nadir-Mapper (NM) instrument on the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (S- NPP). In collaboration with the NASA Making Earth System Data Records for Use in Research Environments (MEaSUREs) Multi-Decadal Nitrogen Dioxide and Derived Products from Satellites (MINDS) project, the GES DISC recently released MINDS datasets. The NASA MEaSUREs MINDS project aims to develop long-term NO2 global data records by adapting a consistent retrieval algorithm to multiple instrument measurements. Long-term data records will be achieved by applying consistent retrieval approaches to multiple satellite instruments, including OMI (2004 - ); the Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment (GOME, 1995-2011) onboard the second European Remote Sensing satellite (ERS-2); the Scanning Imaging Spectrometer for Atmospheric Cartography (SCIAMACHY, 2002-2012) onboard the ENVIronmental SATellite (ENVISAT); GOME-2 on the Meteorological Operational satellites (MetOp-A and MetOp-B, 2006 - ); and TROPOMI onboard the Copernicus S5P (2017 - ). The long-term record (1995 to present) of MINDS datasets makes them very useful for air quality trend studies. Some MINDS datasets with high spatial resolution of only a few kilometers can be used for air quality research and applications at regional scales. In this presentation, we will introduce all of the MINDS products and services, and demonstrate use cases of MINDS data for studying air quality. We will also present a few other NO2 datasets acquired from NASA’s Health and Air Quality Applied Sciences Team (HAQAST), to be archived and distributed by the GES DISC, and highlight some of their applications for air quality and health.

An Oveview of TROPESS Data Products and Services at the NASA GES DISC

The TRopospheric Ozone and Precursors from Earth System Sounding (TROPESS) project generates Earth System Data Records (ESDRs) of ozone, and other atmospheric constituents (CH4,CO, H2O, HDO, NH3, PAN and temperature) by processing data from multiple satellites through a common retrieval algorithm and ground data system. Satellite Level-1B input data used in generating the TROPESS L2 data products include CrIS NOAA-20 (JPSS-1), CrIS SNPP, AIRS Aqua, OMI Aura, and TROPOMI S5P. The common retrieval framework is known as the MUlti-SpEctra, MUlti-SpEcies, Multi-SEnsors (MUSES) science data processing system (MUSES-SDPS). Several of the TROPESS data products are now available from the NASA Goddard Earth Sciences Data and Information Service Center (GES DISC) for users to download. In this presentation we provide an overview of the various TROPESS data products. These data products can be divided into the following Forward Stream types: Standard Products, Summary Products, and Full-Archival Products. Standard Products are for users that are doing full analysis with avenging kernel and covariance corresponding to retrieved vertical profiles. Summary products have a smaller file size and are more convenient for first-look and rapid analysis, include total and partial columns, as well as column averaging kernels. The Full-Archival Products will contain all information used in creating the data. TROPESS also creates Special Products, provided on an as-needed and as-available basis to support NASA field missions and individual-investigator requests over specific regions. Eventually, TROPESS will also produce and deliver a set of Reanalysis Stream products. Data at the GES DISC are being transitioned into the "Cloud". This will allow users with "Cloud” access to perform data analysis directly on the data without downloading the data to their system. Services, such as subsetting and data visualization, will also be provided for TROPESS data products at the GES DISC.

The NASA Merra-2 Reanalysis Products: Data and Tools Used for Aerosol and Air Quality Studies

The NASA Modern-Era Retrospective analysis for Research and Applications Version 2 (MERRA-2) is atmospheric reanalysis data spanning 1980 to present. It has been produced by the NASA Global Modeling and Assimilation Office (GMAO) and is distributed by the NASA Goddard Earth Sciences Data and Information Services Center (GES DISC). MERRA-2 data includes 100 collections of Earth system variables, mainly from the atmospheric model, such as aerosol fields and meteorological fields, radiation fields, and aerosol fields, guided by the assimilation of as many as six million observations every six hours. MERRA-2 has been one of the most popular datasets from NASA and is widely used in interdisciplinary research and applications, with increasing numbers of new users. For example, at least 7000 users accessed MERRA-2 data at GES DISC in the year 2021, ~1000 more users than in the year 2020. In this presentation, we will introduce the MERRA-2 datasets associated with aerosol and air quality studies and use a wildfire case study to demonstrate the data tools developed at GES DISC to analyze and visualize MERRA-2 data, such as Giovanni and the level 3 and level 4 subsetter, and Jupyter Python notebook. We will also update the status of cloud migration of the MERRA-2 data to Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Have Heat Waves Become More Intense and Frequent in North America in the Past 40 Years?

Extreme events, especially heat waves, have seemingly become more frequent and intense in the past decades worldwide, likely associated with global warming. This study uses the extreme detection indices product derived from the NASA Modern-Era Retrospective analysis for Research and Applications version 2 (MERRA-2) data to address whether heat waves have become more intense and frequent in North America in the past 40 years. We also examine in-depth the recent heat wave in June 2023 in Canada and the associated drought and wildfire events and compare them with previous years. We use additional data products in this study for cross-validation, including surface temperature from Phase 2 of the North American Land Data Assimilation System (NLDAS 2.0) and Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) version 7, with a shorter data latency, only a few days. In addition, we will demonstrate how to efficiently conduct long-term time-series data analysis, which involves a large volume of data, using data services developed at NASA GES DISC, such as Giovanni, datarod, and Thematic Real-time Environmental Distributed Data Services (THREDDS) Data Server (TDS). These services can be used to visualize and explore extreme events, and to download only the data that is of interest.

Enabling Cloud Services and Enhanced Data Discovery With Earthdata-Varinfo

NASA’s Earth Observing System Data and Information System (EOSDIS) contains thousands of Earth science datasets from satellites, models, and field campaigns. Each of these collections can contain hundreds of variables that describe each measurement within the dataset, therefore an automated method for generating UMM-Var records is necessary. The Unified Metadata Model for Variables (UMM-Var) provides a framework for variable metadata records in NASA’s Common Metadata Repository (CMR). The Python tool, earthdata-varinfo, was developed to solve this problem of automating the curation of UMM-Var records. Given either a collection DMR file or a netCDF-4 file, earthdata-varinfo can scrape variable metadata and return a CMR compliant UMM-Var record. Earthdata-varinfo can generate thousands of UMM-Var records in a matter of seconds, thus enabling subsetting capabilities and enhancing data discovery.
