Further investigation on the fusion of 6 Li with 209 Bi target at near-barrier energies

The complete and incomplete fusion cross sections for 6 Li+ 209 Bi were measured using the in-beam γ-ray method around the Coulomb barrier. The cross sections of (deuteron captured) incomplete fusion (ICF) products were re-quantified experimentally for this reaction system. Here, the results reveal that the ICF cross section is equivalent to that of complete fusion (CF) above the Coulomb barrier and dominant near or below the Coulomb barrier. A theoretical calculation based on the continuum discretized coupled channel (CDCC) method was performed for the aforementioned CF and ICF cross sections; the result is consistent with the experiments. The universal fusion function (UFF) was also compared with the measured CF cross section for different barrier parameters, demonstrating that the CF suppression factor is significantly influenced by the choice of potential, which can reflect both dynamic and static effects of breakup on the fusion process.

High-Precision Spectroscopy of 20 O Benchmarking Ab Initio Calculations in Light Nuclei

The excited states of unstable 20 O were investigated via γ-ray spectroscopy following the 19 O(d, p) ⁢20 O reaction at 8 A⁢ MeV. By exploiting the Doppler shift attenuation method, the lifetimes of the $2^+_2$ and $3^+_1$ states were firmly established. From the γ-ray branching and E⁢2/M⁢1 mixing ratios for transitions deexciting the $2^+_2$ and $3^+_1$ states, the B⁡(E⁢2) and B⁡(M⁢1) were determined. Various chiral effective field theory Hamiltonians, describing the nuclear properties beyond ground states, along with a standard USDB interaction, were compared with the experimentally obtained data. Such a comparison for a large set of γ-ray transition probabilities with the valence space in medium similarity renormalization group ab initio calculations was performed for the first time in a nucleus far from stability. It was shown that the ab initio approaches using chiral effective field theory forces are challenged by detailed high-precision spectroscopic properties of nuclei. Finally, the reduced transition probabilities were found to be a very constraining test of the performance of the ab initio models.

Shape evolution in even-mass 98-104 Zr isotopes via lifetime measurements using the $\gamma \gamma $-coincidence technique

The Zirconium (Z = 40) isotopic chain has attracted interest for more than four decades. The abrupt lowering of the energy of the first 2 + state and the increase in the transition strength B(E2; 2$^+_1$ →0$^+_1$) going from 98 Zr to 100 Zr has been the first example of “quantum phase transition” in nuclear shapes, which has few equivalents in the nuclear chart. Although a multitude of experiments have been performed to measure nuclear properties related to nuclear shapes and collectivity in the region, none of the measured lifetimes were obtained using the Recoil Distance Doppler Shift method in the γγ-coincidence mode where a gate on the direct feeding transition of the state of interest allows a strict control of systematical errors. Here this work reports the results of lifetime measurements for the first yrast excited states in 98-104 Zr carried out to extract reduced transition probabilities. The new lifetime values in γγ-coincidence and γ-single mode are compared with the results of former experiments. Recent predictions of the Interacting Boson Model with Configuration Mixing, the Symmetry Conserving Configuration Mixing model based on the Hartree–Fock–Bogoliubov approach and the Monte Carlo Shell Model are presented and compared with the experimental data.

An alternative viewpoint on the nuclear structure towards 100 Sn: Lifetime measurements in 105 Sn

This work aims at presenting an alternative approach to the long standing problem of the B(E2) values in Sn isotopes in the vicinity of the N=Z double-magic nucleus 100 Sn, until now predominantly measured with relativistic and intermediate-energy Coulomb excitation reactions. The direct measurement of the lifetime of low-lying excited states in odd-even Sn isotopes provides a new and precise guidance for the theoretical description of the nuclear structure in this region. Lifetime measurements have been performed in 105 Sn for the first time with the coincidence Recoil Distance Doppler Shift technique. The lifetime results for the $7/2^+_1$ first excited state and the $11/2^+_1$ state, $2^+ (^{104}$Sn) Ⓧ $v1g_{7/2}$ multiplet member, are discussed in comparison with state-of-the-art shell model and mean field calculations, highlighting the crucial contribution of proton excitation across the core of 100 Sn. The reduced transition probability B(E2) of the $11/2^+_1$ core-coupled state points out an enhanced staggering with respect to the B(E2; $2^+_1$ → $0^+_1$) in the even-mass 104 Sn and 106 Sn isotopes.

Level scheme study of Mo 91 : Weak-coupling approximation in the N = 50 region

The level scheme of 91 Mo has been studied using the GALILEO γ-ray spectrometer at Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro, INFN. Five transitions together with four levels are identified for the first time by the γ-γ coincidence measurement, considerably enriching the negative band in 91 Mo. Furthermore, the discrepancy in the previous parity assignments for the states higher than 3807.5 keV has been clarified with the help of new experimental results. A shell-model calculation employing the JUN45 interaction is performed in order to get a further understanding of the level structure of 91 Mo. Being close to N=50 shell closure, the weak-coupling approximation between the valence g 9/2 neutron-hole with the even-even core ( 92 Mo) is discussed in 91Mo.

First Evidence of Axial Shape Asymmetry and Configuration Coexistence in Zn 74 : Suggestion for a Northern Extension of the N = 40 Island of Inversion

The excited states of N=44 74 Zn were investigated via γ-ray spectroscopy following 74 Cu β decay. By exploiting γ-γ angular correlation analysis, the 2$_2^+$, 3$_1^+$, 0$_2^+$, and 2$_3^+$ states in 74 Zn were firmly established. The γ-ray branching and E2/M1 mixing ratios for transitions deexciting the 2$_2^+$, 3$_1^+$, and 2$_3^+$ states were measured, allowing for the extraction of relative B(E2) values. In particular, the 2$_3^+$→0$_2^+$ and 2$_3^+$→4$_1^+$ transitions were observed for the first time. Here the results show excellent agreement with new microscopic large-scale shell-model calculations, and are discussed in terms of underlying shapes, as well as the role of neutron excitations across the N=40 gap. Enhanced axial shape asymmetry (triaxiality) is suggested to characterize 74 Zn in its ground state. Furthermore, an excited K=0 band with a significantly larger softness in its shape is identified. A shore of the N=40 "island of inversion" appears to manifest above Z=26, previously thought as its northern limit in the chart of the nuclides.

In-beam $$\gamma $$-ray spectroscopy of $$^{94}$$Ag

Abstract A recoil-beta-tagging experiment has been performed to study the excited $$T=0$$ T = 0 and $$T=1$$ T = 1 states in the odd–odd $$N=Z$$ N = Z nucleus $$^{94}$$ 94 Ag, populated via the $$^{40}$$ 40 Ca( $$^{58}$$ 58 Ni,1p3n) $$^{94}$$ 94 Ag reaction. The experiment was conducted using the MARA recoil separator and JUROGAM3 array at the Accelerator Laboratory of the University of Jyväskylä. Through correlating fast, high-energy beta decays at the MARA focal plane with prompt $$\gamma $$ γ rays emitted at the reaction target, a number of transitions between excited states in $$^{94}$$ 94 Ag have been identified. The timing characteristics of these transitions confirm that they fall within decay sequences that feed the short-lived $$T=1$$ T = 1 ground state of $$^{94}$$ 94 Ag. The transitions are proposed to proceed within and between the sets of states with $$T=0$$ T = 0 and $$T=1$$ T = 1 . Possible correspondence between some of these transitions from analog states in $$^{94}$$ 94 Pd has been discussed, and shell-model calculations including multipole and monopole electromagnetic effects have been presented, in order to enable predictions of the decay patterns between the $$T=0$$ T = 0 and $$T=1$$ T = 1 states and to allow a theoretical set of Coulomb energy differences to be calculated for the $$A = 94$$ A = 94 $$T=1$$ T = 1 analog states.

Spectroscopic quadrupole moments in 124 $\mathrm{Xe}$

The Xe isotopic chain with four valence protons above the Z=50 shell closure is an ideal laboratory for the study of the evolution of nuclear deformation. At the N=82 shell closure, 136 Xe presents all characteristics of a doubly closed shell nucleus with a spherical shape. In the very neutron-deficient isotopes close to N=50, the α-decay chain of Xe was investigated to probe the radioactive decay properties near the drip-line and the magicity of 100 Sn. Additionally, the Xe isotopes present higher order symmetries in the nuclear deformation such as the octupole degree of freedom near N=60 and N=90 or O(6) symmetry in stable isotopes. The relevance of the O(6) symmetry has been investigated by measuring the spectroscopic quadrupole moment of the first excited states in 124 Xe. In the O(6) symmetry limit, the spectroscopic quadrupole moment of collective states is expected to be null. A stable 124 Xe beam with energies of 4.03A MeV and 4.11 A MeV was used to bombard a nat W target at the GANIL facility. Excited states were populated via the safe Coulomb excitation reaction. The collision of the heavy ions with a large Z at low energy make this reaction sensitive to the diagonal E2 matrix element of the excited states. The recoils were detected in the VAMOS++ magnetic spectrometer and the γ rays in the AGATA tracking array. The least squares fitting code gosia was used for the analysis to extract both E2 and M1 transitional and E2 diagonal matrix elements. The rotational ground state band was populated up to the 8$^{+}_{1}$ state as well as the 2$^{+}_{2}$ and 4$^{+}_{2}$ states. Using high precision spectroscopic data to constrain the gosia fit, the spectroscopic quadrupole moments of the 2$^{+}_{1}$, 4$^{+}_{1}$, and 6$^{+}_{1}$ states were determined for the first time. The spectroscopic quadrupole moments were found to be negative, large, and constant in the ground state band underlining the prolate axially deformed ground state band of 124 Xe. Here, the present experimental data confirm that the O(6) symmetry is substantially broken in 124 Xe .

Level scheme study of 92 Mo: Searching for evidence of core excitation

Excited states in 92 Mo are populated via the 89 Y( 6 Li, 3$\textit{n}$) 92 Mo reaction at the tandem of XTU, INFN-LNL. The level scheme of 92 Mo is revised and expanded considerably by the γ-γ coincidence measurement. The newly observed level structures are compared with different shell-model calculations performed in various model spaces. In this work, the results show that the several high-energy (≈2 MeV) transitions, observed for the first time in the current work, could be a presumable signature of $\textit{N}$ = 50 core-breaking effect. The measured strengths of $\textit{E}$1 transitions between the low-lying positive and negative bands indicate an important contribution from $\textit{Z}$ = 28 proton core-excitation

Spectroscopy of the T = 2 mirror nuclei 48 Fe/ 48 Ti using mirrored knockout reactions

A sequence of excited states has been established for the first time in the proton-rich nucleus 48 Fe (Z=26, N=22). The technique of mirrored (i.e. analogue) one-nucleon knockout reactions was applied, in which the T z = ±2 mirror pair, 48 Fe/ 48 Ti were populated via one-neutron/one-proton knockout from the secondary beams 49 Fe/ 49 V, respectively. The analogue properties of the reactions were used to help establish the new level scheme of 48 Fe. The inclusive and exclusive cross sections were determined for the populated states. Large differences between the cross sections for the two mirrored reactions were observed and have been interpreted in terms of different degrees of binding of the mirror nuclei and in the context of the recent observations of suppression of spectroscopic strength as a function of nuclear binding, for knockout reactions on light solid targets. Mirror energy differences (MED) have been determined between the analogue T = 2 states and compared with the shell model predictions. MED for this mirror pair, due to their location in the shell, are especially sensitive to excitations out of the f 7/2 shell, and present a stringent test of the shell-model prescription.

Complete set of bound negative-parity states in the neutron-rich nucleus 18 N

High-resolution γ -ray spectroscopy of N 18 is performed with the Advanced GAmma Tracking Array, following deep-inelastic processes induced by an O 18 beam on a Ta 181 target. Six states are newly identified, which together with the three known excitations exhaust all negative-parity excited states expected in N 18 below the neutron threshold. Spin and parities are proposed for all located states on the basis of decay branchings and comparison with large-scale shell-model calculations performed in the p-sd space, with the YSOX interaction. Of particular interest is the location of the 0 1 - and 1 2 - excitations, which provide strong constrains for cross-shell p-sd matrix elements based on realistic interactions and help to simultaneously reproduce the ground and first-excited states in N 16 and N 18 , for the first time. Overall, understanding the N 18 structure may also have significant impact on neutron-capture cross-section calculations in r-process modeling including light neutron-rich nuclei.

Shell model analysis of the B ( E 2,2 + → 0 + ) values in the A = 70, T = 1 triplet 70 Kr, 70 Br, and 70 Se

The B(E2, 2 + → 0 + ) transition strengths of the T=1 isobaric triplet 70 Kr, 70 Br, 70 Se, recently measured at the RIKEN Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory (RIBF), are discussed in terms of state-of-the-art large scale shell model calculations using the JUN45 and JUN45 + LNPS plus Coulomb interactions. In this Letter we argue that, depending on the effective charges used, the calculations are either in line with the experimental data within statistical uncertainties, or the anomaly happens in 70 Br, rather than 70 Kr. In the latter case, we suggest that it can be due to the presence of a hitherto undetected 1 + T = 0 state below the yrast 2 + T = 1 state. Furthermore, our results do not support a shape change of 70 Kr with respect to the other members of the isobaric multiplet.

GALILEO, a new 4 pi high-resolution gamma-detection array, based on HPGe detectors, has been developed and installed at the Legnaro National Laboratories. The GALILEO array greatly benefits from a fully-digital readout chain, customized DAQ, and a variety of complementary detectors to improve the resolving power by the detection of particles, ions or high-energy gamma-ray transitions. In this paper, a full description of the array, including electronics and DAQ, is presented together with its complementary instrumentation.

Accessing tens-to-hundreds femtoseconds nuclear state lifetimes with low-energy binary heavy-ion reactions

A novel Monte Carlo technique has been developed to determine lifetimes of excited states in the tens-to-hundreds femtoseconds range in products of low-energy heavy-ion binary reactions, with complex velocity distributions. The method is based on a detailed study of Doppler-broadened γ-ray lineshapes. Its relevance is demonstrated in connection with the 18 O(7.0MeV/u)+ 181 Ta experiment, performed at GANIL with the AGATA+VAMOS+PARIS setup, to study neutron-rich O, C, N, ... nuclei. Excited states in 17 O and 19 O, with known lifetimes, are used to validate the method over the ~20-400fs lifetime-sensitivity range. Emphasis is given to the unprecedented position resolution provided by γ-tracking arrays, which turns out to be essential for reaching the required accuracy in Doppler-shift correction. The technique is anticipated to be an important tool for lifetime investigations in exotic neutron-rich nuclei, produced with intense ISOL-type beams.

In-beam γ-ray spectroscopy of 62,64 Cr

The region of neutron-rich Cr isotopes has garnered much attention in recent years due to a rapid onset of collectivity near neutron number N = 40. We report here on the first γ-ray spectroscopy beyond the ($4$ $^{+}_{1}$) state in 62,64 Cr, using nucleon removal reactions from several projectiles within a rare-isotope beam cocktail. A candidate for the 6 + state in 64 Cr is presented as well as one for, possibly, the second excited 0 + state in 62 Cr. The results are discussed in comparison to the LNPS shell-model predictions that allow for neutron excitations across the N = 40 harmonic oscillator gap into the g 9/2 and d 5/2 orbitals. Here, the calculated level schemes for 62,64 Cr reveal intriguing collective structures. From the predicted neutron particle-hole character of the low-lying states in these Cr isotopes, 62 Cr emerges as a transitional system on the path to the center of the N = 40 island of inversion.

Lifetime measurements of excited states in neutron-rich 53 Ti: Benchmarking effective shell-model interactions

Level lifetimes of the yrast (5/2 - ) to 13/2 - states in the neutron-rich nucleus 53 Ti, produced in a multinucleon-transfer reaction, have been measured for the first time. The recoil distance Doppler-shift method was employed and lifetimes of the excited states were extracted by a lineshape analysis aided by GEANT4-based Monte-Carlo simulations. The experiment was performed at the Grand Accelerateur National d'Ions Lourds facility in Caen, France, by using the Advanced Gamma Tracking Array for the gamma-ray detection coupled to the large-acceptance variable mode spectrometer for an event-by-event particle identification and the Cologne plunger for deep-inelastic reactions. Reduced transition probabilities, deduced from the lifetimes, give new information on the nuclear structure of 53 Ti, and are used to benchmark different shell-model calculations using established interactions in the fp shell.

Isospin symmetry breaking in the mirror pair 73 Sr- 73 Br

The recent experimental observation of isospin symmetry breaking (ISB) in the ground states of the T=3/2 mirror pair 73 Sr- 73 Br is theoretically studied using large-scale shell-model calculations. The large valence space and the successful PFSDG-U effective interaction used for the nuclear part of the problem capture possible structural changes and provide a robust basis to treat the ISB effects of both electromagnetic and nonelectromagnetic origin. The calculated shifts and mirror-energy differences are consistent with the inversion of the I π =1/2 - ,5/2 - states between 73 Sr- 73 Br and suggest that the role played by the Coulomb interaction is dominant. Finally, an isospin breaking contribution of nuclear origin is estimated to be ≈25keV.
