Towards a new generation of solid total-energy detectors for neutron-capture time-of-flight experiments with intense neutron beams

Challenging neutron-capture cross-section measurements of small cross sections and samples with a very limited number of atoms require high-flux time-of-flight facilities. In turn, such facilities need innovative detection setups that are fast, have low sensitivity to neutrons, can quickly recover from the so-called γ-flash, and offer the highest possible detection sensitivity. In this paper, we present several steps towards such advanced systems. Specifically, we describe the performance of a high-sensitivity experimental setup at CERN n_TOF EAR2. It consists of nine sTED detector modules in a compact cylindrical configuration, two conventional used large-volume C 6 D 6 detectors, and one LaCl 3 (Ce) detector. The performance of these detection systems is compared using 93 Nb(n, γ) data. We also developed a detailed G EANT small4 Monte Carlo model of the experimental EAR2 setup, which allows for a better understanding of the detector features, including their efficiency determination. This Monte Carlo model has been used for further optimization, thus leading to a new conceptual design of a γ detector array, STAR, based on a deuterated-stilbene crystal array. Finally, the suitability of deuterated-stilbene crystals for the future STAR array is investigated experimentally utilizing a small stilbene-d12 prototype. The results suggest a similar or superior performance of STAR with respect to other setups based on liquid-scintillators, and allow for additional features such as neutron-gamma discrimination and a higher level of customization capability.

Na 22 activation level measurements of fused silica rods in the LHC target absorber for neutrals compared to simulations

The Target Absorbers for Neutrals (TANs) are located in a high intensity radiation environment inside the tunnel of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). TANs are positioned about 140 m downstream from the beam interaction points. Seven 40-cm long fused silica rods with different dopant specifications were irradiated in the TAN by the Beam RAte of Neutrals (BRAN) detector group during p + p data taking from 2016 to 2018 at the LHC. The peak dose delivered to the fused silica rods was 18 MGy. We report measurements of the 22 Na activation of the fused silica rods carried out at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Argonne National Laboratory. At the end of the irradiation campaign, the maximum 22 Na activity observed was A = 21 kBq/cm 3 corresponding to a density, ρ = 2.5 x 10 12 /cm 3 , of 22 Na nuclei. FLUKA Monte Carlo simulations have been performed by the CERN FLUKA team to estimate 22 Na activities for the irradiated BRAN rod samples. The simulations reproduce the 22 Na activity profile measured along the rods, with a 35% underestimation of the experimental measurement results.

Radio astronomy Explorer-B postlaunch attitude operations analysis

The attitude support activities of the Radio Astronomy Explorer-B are reported. The performance of the spacecraft hardware and software are discussed along with details of the mission events, from launch through main boom deployment. Reproductions of displays are presented which were used during support activities. The interactive graphics proved the support function by providing the quality control necessary to ensure mission success in an environment where flight simulated ground testing of spacecraft hardware cannot be performed.
