Equation of state of matter at supernuclear densities.

The qualitative features of the equation of state of matter at supernuclear densities are deduced through a careful examination of the nature of particle interactions at short distances and by the introduction of an 'effective baryon mass spectrum.' It is found that the equation of state begins to take on a particularly simple form (the 'asymptotic form') at a relatively low matter density of 100,000 teragrams per cu cm.

Minimum mass of a neutron star.

The equation of state at subnuclear densities is considered together with the average binding energy per nucleon and the possibilities for a conversion of a neutron star into a white dwarf. It is found that the stable minimum mass with a core of pure neutron gas is equal to 0.067 units in terms of the solar mass, and with a core clustered with heavy nuclei equals 0.093 units. The real minimum mass is probably somewhere between these two numbers.

Properties of hadron matter. II - Dense baryon matter and neutron stars.

In this article we have provided certain details of a nuclear-matter computation, based on the Brueckner-Bethe-Goldstone theory of nuclear reaction, which leads to an equation of state for matter in the density region of 10 to 500 trillion g/cu cm. We also explore the possibilities that at very high baryon densities or for very short baryon separations, the net baryon-baryon interaction may be negligible so that the results of dynamical models, like the statistical bootstrap model and the dual-resonance model, may be applicable to the study of dense baryon matter. Several plausible equations of state are constructed, and their effect on the limiting mass of the neutron star is examined.
