United States manned spacecraft reliability experience

Attention is given to the reliability controls in manned spacecraft programs, taking into account the project Mercury, the Gemini program, the Apollo program, the Skylab program, and the Apollo-Soyuz test project. Reliability controls used in these programs are related to reliability management, parts and materials control, failure mode and effects analysis, reliability quantitative analysis, problem reporting and corrective action control, test control, limited-life control, and milestone reviews. A summary is presented of the major reliability tasks and innovations being used on the Space Shuttle program. Examples of these innovations include improved management techniques and an early identification of specific certification tests.

Apollo experience report: Certification test program

A review of the Apollo spacecraft certification (qualification) test program is presented. The approach to devising the spectrum of dynamic and climatic environments, the formulation of test durations, and the relative significance of the formal certification test program compared with development testing and acceptance testing are reviewed. Management controls for the formulation of test requirements, test techniques, data review, and acceptance of test results are considered. Significant experience gained from the Apollo spacecraft certification test program which may be applicable to future manned spacecraft is presented.

Manned spacecraft nonmetallic-materials flammability selection criteria and requirements

The criteria and requirements governing the selection and use of nonmetallic materials in manned spacecraft to control potential fire hazards are reviewed. The development of flammability requirements is discussed and traced through the historical evolution. Events that dictated the changes that have taken place are discussed. The current nonmetallic material requirements are presented. Significant features of a nonmetallic materials handbook are included.
