Actuators Help Correct For Gravitational Bending Of Antenna

Force-actuator scheme devised to help correct for decrease, caused by gravitational bending, in gain of 34-m-diameter paraboloidal microwave antenna reflector used for tracking distant spacecraft and observing celestial radio sources. Also applicable to other antennas bending significantly under own weight, with consequent degradation of performance.

Computing Vibration-Mode Matrices From Finite-Element Output

Postprocessing algorithms devised to facilitate vibrational-mode analyses of dynamics of complicated structures. Yields inertia matrices and elastic/rigid-coupling matrices. Such analyses important in simulation and control in active suppression of vibrations in large building or in precise aiming of large antenna.

Analyzing Large Reflector Antenna Structures

Iterative Design of Antenna Structures (IDEAS) computer program performs finite-element analysis and optimization of design, with special features for analysis and design of microwave antennas and associated structural components. Primary feature to perform root-mean-square-best-fitting path-length-error and boresight-pointing-error analyses for Cassegrain microwave antenna structure loaded by gravity, wind, or other environmental effects. Flexible and easy to use. Written in ATHENA FORTRAN and ASSEMBLER.

Fast Approximate Analysis Of Modified Antenna Structure

Abbreviated algorithms developed for fast approximate analysis of effects of modifications in supporting structures upon root-mean-square (rms) path-length errors of paraboloidal-dish antennas. Involves combination of methods of structural-modification reanalysis with new extensions of correlation analysis to obtain revised rms path-length error. Full finite-element analysis, usually requires computer of substantial capacity, necessary only to obtain responses of unmodified structure to known external loads and to selected self-equilibrating "indicator" loads. Responses used in shortcut calculations, which, although theoretically "exact", simple enough to be performed on hand-held calculator. Useful in design, design-sensitivity analysis, and parametric studies.

Structural optimization and recent large ground antenna installations

Within the past several years, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory has designed and built major ground antenna structures in Spain, Australia, and California. One of the antennas at each location is a 70 meter-diameter structure that is a retrofit of the existing 64 meter antenna. The 64 meter existing antennas were first stripped back to a 34 meter interior and then completely new construction with deeper trusses was added to extend the interior to 70 meters. The 70 meter project included the rare opportunity to collect field data to compare with predictions of the finite-element analytical models. The new quadripod design was tested for its lower mode natural frequencies and the main reflector was measured by theodolite to determine deflections of subsets of the backup-structure deformations under load. The emphasis here is to examine measurement results and possibly provide some appreciation of the relationship of predictions made from the design model to actual measurements.
