Use of the JPL Electronic Nose to detect leaks and spills in an enclosed environment

An electronic nose to be used as an air quality monitor in human habitats in space has been developed at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. This device is capable of detecting, identifying and quantifying several organic and inorganic chemical species which might be present as contaminants in spacecraft air. The complete portable device, including sensors, electronics, and software for data analysis, has been extensively tested.

Effect of structure and morphology on thermal and electrical properties of polycarbonate film capacitors

Research is reported to identify polycarbonate (PC) film characteristics and fabrication procedures which extend the reliable performance range of PC capacitors to 125 C without derating, and establish quality control techniques and transfer technology to US PC film manufacturers. The approach chosen to solve these problems was to develop techniques for fabricating biaxially oriented (BX) 2 microns or thinner PC film with a low dissipation factor up to 140 C; isotropic dimensional stability; high crystallinity; and high voltage breakdown strength. The PC film structure and morphology was then correlated to thermal and electrical capacitor behavior. Analytical techniques were developed to monitor film quality during capacitor fabrication, and as a result, excellent performance was demonstrated during initial capacitor testing.

High-efficiency AlGaAs-GaAs Cassegrainian concentrator cells

AlGaAs-GaAs heteroface space concentrator solar cells have been fabricated by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition. AMO efficiencies as high as 21.1% have been observed both for p-n and np structures under concentration (90 to 100X) at 25 C. Both cell structures are characterized by high quantum efficiencies and their performances are close to those predicted by a realistic computer model. In agreement with the computer model, the n-p cell exhibits a higher short-circuit current density.

Magnesium doping of efficient GaAs and Ga(0.75)In(0.25)As solar cells grown by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition

Magnesium has been substituted for zinc in GaAs and Ga(0.75)In(0.25)As solar cells grown by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). Bis(cyclopentadienyl)magnesium (Cp2Mg) is used as the MOCVD transport agent for Mg. Full retention of excellent material quality and efficient cell performance results. The substitution of Mg for Zn would enhance the abruptness and reproducibility of doping profiles, and facilitate high temperature processing and operation, due to the much lower diffusion coefficient of Mg, relative to Zn, in these materials.

Development of a 30 percent efficient 3-junction monolithic cascade solar cell

The individual subcells of the 3-junction monolithic cascade concentrator cell are grown lattice mismatched with respect to each other, if appropriate grading layers are inserted between the mismatched layers. Under these conditions, negligible degradation of the properties of either underlying or overlying material results, and high-efficiency subcells are produced by this technique.

OM-VPE growth of Mg-doped GaAs

The epitaxial growth of Mg-doped GaAs by the organometallic vapor phase epitaxial process (OM-VPE) has been achieved for the first time. The doping is controllable over a wide range of input fluxes of bis (cyclopentadienyl) magnesium, (C5H5)2Mg, the organometallic precursor to Mg.
