The XFV-12A Thrust-Augmented Wing (TAW) prototype aircraft

The XFV-12A, a unique V/STOL technology prototype aircraft being developed for the Navy, is described. The innovative design features a thrust augmented wing and a canard ejector. Structural, functional, and control test performances are discussed. Static tether test results are also discussed. Assessment of test results are given along with projections for future modification areas.

An innovative technique for static and dynamic V/STOL testing

Initial hover testing of the Navy's XFV-12A V/STOL technology prototype aircraft is being conducted in the former Lunar Lander Research Facility at the NASA Langley Research Center. The aircraft incorporates a unique lift/control concept for V/STOL flight. A key element in the development of this aircraft has been the application of existing hardware and facilities to conserve program funds. Adaptation of the NASA Gantry has created a V/STOL aircraft test facility with unique capability and flexibility. Static lift and control measurements can be obtained and dynamic hover flight can be conducted over a wide range of realistic test conditions.

Broadening of the D lines and the relaxation of the resonance levels of sodium due to collisions with helium.

Calculated potentials for the NaHe molecule are used to obtain collision-induced widths and shifts for the sodium D lines together with cross sections for fine-structure transitions and the relaxation of the multipole polarizations of the resonance levels. The atomic collision is treated in an adiabatic approximation in which the colliding atoms form a molecular system which rotates during the collision. We find the resonance lines to be broadened equally and to be approximately 70% wider, and with associated shifts of an order of magnitude smaller, than expected on the basis of van der Waals forces. The dependence of the cross sections for relaxation of the multipole polarizations of the resonance levels on the molecular-coupling conditions and the rotation of the system during collision is discussed and indicates a limitation of the sum rule for these cross sections.
