Collisionless relativistic magnetic reconnection driven by electron vortices in laser-plasma interaction

Magnetic reconnection (MR) is a fundamental process in space and laboratory plasmas. The appearance of high power lasers opens a new way to investigate MR under the relativistic condition. In this paper, relativistic collisionless MR driven by two ultra-intense lasers and a pair of asymmetric targets is studied numerically via the kinetic simulations. The static magnetic fields produced by the electron vortex structures with opposite magnetic polarities approach each other driven by the magnetic pressure and the density gradient. The antiparallel magnetic fields annihilate accompanied with the topological variation and the corresponding magnetic field energy is being dissipated to the kinetic energy of the nonthermal charged particles. Besides the outflows along the current sheet, a fast particle bunch is accelerated perpendicularly contributed by the displacement current.

Focusability in the multi-pump Raman amplification of short laser pulses

Spatially combining multiple strong laser beams is a promising concept for achieving ultrahigh laser intensities. Proof-of-principle experiments have been conducted at the National Ignition Facility to report a combination of up to 20 pulses with high energy conversion efficiency. However, the combination process might damage the seed focusability due to mismatch of the seed and pump wavefronts. Here, we investigate the effect of the finite pump beam size on the focusability of the seed pulse. We propose an approach to retain and even improve the seed focusability by specifically arranging multiple pump beams. The results are demonstrated by the numerical solution of coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations. Our findings also apply to seed amplification by filamented pump pulses.

Ion Acceleration in Driven Magnetic Reconnection during High-energy–Density Plasma Interaction

Strongly driven magnetic reconnection occurs in astrophysical events and also in laboratory experiments with laser-produced plasma. We have performed 2.5D particle-in-cell simulations of collisions of two high-energy–density plasmas resulting in strongly driven magnetic reconnection that demonstrates significant non-thermal ion acceleration. Such acceleration is significant only when the plasma beta is sufficiently low that the Alfvén speed at the reconnection inflow exceeds the thermal speed. Under these conditions, the most energetic ions are primarily accelerated by the Hall electric field in the reconnection outflow, especially at the trailing edge of an emerging plasmoid in the outflow. Here, laboratory experiments in the near future should be able to confirm these predictions and their applicability to astrophysical situations.
