Hybrid polymer network cathode-enabled soluble-polysulfide-free lithium–sulfur batteries

Among the emerging 'beyond lithium-ion' technologies for maximized sustainability, lithium-sulfur (Li-S) is a favoured chemistry because of its exceptional energy density from the conversion of sulfur, an element in abundant supply. However, the dissolution of several intermediate polysulfides formed during conversion leads to rapid performance degradation over cycling. Here, in this study, we address this issue by sulfurizing a hybrid polymer network with polyphosphazene and carbon as a cathode for Li-S batteries. With rich sites to re-bond and adsorb dissociative sulfur species, this hybrid polymer network circumvents the formation of soluble polysulfides and enables a unique, reversible inserting conversion reaction. Thus, our cathode delivers both high capacity (~900 mAh g -1 cathode ) and excellent cycling stability in Li-S coin cells, with a pouch cell demonstration of projected energy density of ~300 Wh kg -1 and 84.9% capacity retention after 150 cycles. The strategy can be extended to other cost-effective, recyclable polymers, advancing sulfur-based batteries towards practical energy storage application.

Chloride electrolyte enabled practical zinc metal battery with a near-unity Coulombic efficiency

Rechargeable aqueous zinc batteries are finding their niche in stationary storage applications where safety, cost, scalability and carbon footprint matter most. However, harnessing this reversible two-electron redox chemistry is plagued by major technical issues, notably hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) at the zinc surface, whose impacts are often not revealed under typical measurement conditions. Here we report a concentrated electrolyte design that eliminates this parasitic reaction and enables a Coulombic efficiency (CE) of 99.95% for Zn plating/stripping measured at a low current density of 0.2 mA cm -2 . With extra chloride salts and dimethyl carbonate in concentrated ZnCl 2 electrolyte, the hybrid electrolyte with a unique chemical environment features low Hammett acidity and facilitates the in situ formation of a dual-layered solid electrolyte interphase, protecting zinc anodes from HER and dendrite growth. Benefiting from the near-unity CE, the pouch cell with a VOPO 4 ·2H 2 O cathode sustains 500 deep cycles without swelling or leaking and delivers an energy density of 100 Wh kg -1 under practical conditions. Finally, our work represents a critical step forward in accelerating the market adoption of zinc batteries as an energy storage system with higher sustainability.

Multifunctional Li-ion Conducting Interfacial Materials for Lithium Metal Batteries”

The overall approach will focus on the development and optimization of synthesis methods and precursors for multifunctional Li-ion conducting interfacial materials, protective layer composition, and protective layer fabrication methods. This will be accompanied by property measurement and characterization (conductivity, mechanical properties, etc.) for the protective layer on Li metal, along with cell testing.

High Interfacial-Energy and Lithiophilic Janus Interphase Enables Stable Lithium Metal Anodes

The stability of solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layers is critical for developing lithium (Li) metal batteries. However, the fabrication of stable SEI layers is plagued by un-controlled structures, properties, and functions. In this work a controllable design of an ordered LiF-rich and lithiophilic hybrid Janus interphase (LiF-HJI) is reported using organic fluorination reagent as a functional SEI precursor. The LiF-HJI with a lower crystalline LiF layer and an upper Li organosulfide layer provides high interfacial energy with the Li metal and strong Li-ion affinity, allows homogenous Li-ion distribution, fast and uniform Li-ion transport, and excellent mechanical and passivation properties, enabling stable Li metal anodes under harsh conditions, such as high deposition capacities (6 mA h cm -2 ), current densities (10 mA cm -2 ), and rates (5 C). Stable LiF-HJI@Li greatly improves cycling stability and capacity retention (80.1% after 300 cycles) of Li||LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 cells at a commercial-level areal capacity (≈4.2 mA h cm -2 ). Even under a lean-electrolyte condition of 3 g Ah -1 , 80% capacity retention can be maintained after 100 cycles, demonstrating excellent cycling performance under such harsh conditions.
