Robust three-dimensional type-II Dirac semimetal state in SrAgBi

Topological semimetals such as Dirac, Weyl or nodal line semimetals are widely studied for their peculiar properties including high Fermi velocities, small effective masses and high magnetoresistance. When the Dirac cone is tilted, exotic phenomena could emerge whereas materials hosting such states are promising for photonics and plasmonics applications. Here we present evidence that SrAgBi is a spin-orbit coupling-induced type-II three-dimensional Dirac semimetal featuring tilted Dirac cone at the Fermi energy. Near charge compensation and Fermi surface characteristics are not much perturbed by 7% of vacancy defects on the Ag atomic site, suggesting that SrAgBi could be a material of interest for observation of robust optical and spintronic topological quantum phenomena.

Topological Crystalline Insulator Candidate ErAsS with Hourglass Fermion and Magnetic-Tuned Topological Phase Transition

Topological crystalline insulators (TCIs) with hourglass fermion surface state have attracted a lot of attention and are further enriched by crystalline symmetries and magnetic order. Here, the emergence of hourglass fermion surface state and exotic phases in the newly discovered, air-stable ErAsS single crystals are shown. In the paramagnetic phase, ErAsS is expected to be a TCI with hourglass fermion surface state protected by the nonsymmorphic symmetry. Dirac-cone-like bands and nearly linear dispersions in large energy range are experimentally observed, consistent well with theoretical calculations. Below T N ≈ 3.27 K, ErAsS enters a collinear antiferromagnetic state, which is a trivial insulator breaking the time-reversal symmetry. An intermediate incommensurate magnetic state appears in a narrow temperature range (3.27–3.65 K), exhibiting an abrupt change in magnetic coupling. Overall, the results reveal that ErAsS is an experimentally available TCI candidate and provide a unique platform to understand the formation of hourglass fermion surface state and explore magnetic-tuned topological phase transitions.

Investigation and Suppression of Oxygen Release by LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 Cathode under Overcharge Conditions

The safety issue of lithium-ion batteries is a crucial factor limiting their large-scale application. Therefore, it is of practical significance to evaluate the impact of their overcharge behavior because of the severe levels of oxygen release of cathode materials during this process. Here, by combining a variety of in situ techniques of spectroscopy and electron microscopy, this work studies the structural degradation of LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 (NCM811) accompanying the oxygen release in the overcharge process. It is observed that a small amount of O 2 evolves from the initial surface at ≈4.7V. When charging to a higher voltage (≈5.5V), a large amount of O 2 evolves on the newly formed surface due to the occurrence of microcracks. Based on experimental results and theoretical calculations, it is determined that the oxygen release mainly occurs in the near-surface regions, where the remaining oxygen vacancies accumulate to create voids. To suppress the oxygen release, single-crystalline NCM811 with integrated structure is introduced and serves as a cathode, which can effectively inhibit morphology destruction and reduce the activation of lattice oxygen in the surface region. These findings provide a theoretical basis and effective strategy for improving the safety performance of Ni-rich cathode materials in practical applications.

Issues in Bi-Directional Interoperability between BIM and BEM

The state-of-the-art interoperability between Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Building Energy Modeling (BEM) is mainly one-way. BEM software like EnergyPlus takes design input from BIM and simulates the energy consumption of the building. BIM, however, is unable to leverage energy simulation results from BEM smoothly. This lack of bi-directional interoperability between BIM and BEM prevents buildings from seeking more energy-efficient design options and limits BIM applications in optimal generative design. In this research, the authors have conducted the following activities related to two-way interoperability between BIM and BEM: (1) surveyed its current status through literature review, (2) investigated barriers to the bi-directional interoperability, and (3) suggested possible approaches to enable bi-directional interoperability and research outlook in the field. As a result, the authors have identified three main barriers to BIM BEM interoperability, namely, inefficient collaboration, limited scope in information transformation, and lack of BEM to BIM transformation. Future directions are suggested to address these barriers.
