Lewis Acid‐Activated Charge Trapping in Dielectric Polymers for Superior High‐Temperature Electrostatic Energy Storage

Dielectric polymer capacitors are essential for electrostatic energy storage but suffer from charge transport-induced energy losses, particularly at elevated temperatures where thermally activated charge carriers exacerbate conduction. Conventional mitigation strategies rely on introducing heterogeneous interfaces to create charge traps, complicating scalable film fabrication. A homogeneous molecular trapping mechanism would circumvent these complexities, yet remains underexplored. Herein, a charge trapping strategy is devised by modifying the lowest occupied molecular orbitals of dielectric polymers through Lewis acid-base adduct formation. The use of tris(pentafluorophenyl)boron (BCF) as a Lewis acidic molecular additive introduces deeper charge traps in commercial polyetherimide (PEI) while retaining homogeneity. With only 0.5 wt.% loading, the PEI-BCF film exhibits greatly improved breakdown strength, achieving an ultrahigh discharged energy density of 7.3 J cm-3 with excellent cycle stability at 200 °C. This work establishes a facile molecular approach to decoupling charge trapping from heterogeneous interfaces, enabling high-energy-density polymer capacitors operable under extreme thermal conditions.

Recent trends in all-organic polymer dielectrics for high-temperature electrostatic energy storage capacitors

Electrostatic energy storage (EES) capacitors are critical for renewable energy and high-power systems, driving the search for dielectric materials that combine superior electrical insulation, mechanical flexibility, low density, cost-effectiveness, and processability. Polymer-based dielectrics have emerged as leading candidates, particularly for high electric field applications. However, conventional polymers often fail to meet the demands of high-temperature environments due to increased electrical conductivity and reduced discharged energy density at elevated temperatures, resulting in energy loss and reduced performance. High glass transition temperature (T g) polymers show promise but require further optimization to enhance their energy storage capabilities under thermal and electrical stress. This review provides a comprehensive update on recent advancements in high-T g polymer-based dielectrics for EES capacitors, focusing on both intrinsic polymers and all-organic composites. It outlines key design principles, critical performance parameters, and innovative strategies—such as nanofiller doping, layered architectures, physical blending, and chemical crosslinking—to improve electrical, thermal, and mechanical properties. The review also highlights emerging trends, including the integration of machine learning algorithms to explore novel polymer structures and expand the chemical design space. By bridging the gap between academic research and industrial application, this review aims to accelerate the development of next-generation dielectric materials capable of balancing multiple performance metrics for high-temperature EES capacitors.

Machine learning-accelerated discovery of heat-resistant polysulfates for electrostatic energy storage

The development of heat-resistant dielectric polymers that withstand intense electric fields at high temperatures is critical for electrification. Balancing thermal stability and electrical insulation, however, is exceptionally challenging as these properties are often inversely correlated. A traditional intuition-driven polymer design approach results in a slow discovery loop that limits breakthroughs. Here we present a machine learning-driven strategy to rapidly identify high-performance, heat-resistant polymers. A trustworthy feed-forward neural network is trained to predict key proxy parameters and down select polymer candidates from a library of nearly 50,000 polysulfates. The highly efficient and modular sulfur fluoride exchange click chemistry enables successful synthesis and validation of selected candidates. A polysulfate featuring a 9,9-di(naphthalene)-fluorene repeat unit exhibits excellent thermal resilience and achieves ultrahigh discharged energy density with over 90% efficiency at 200 °C. Its exceptional cycling stability underscores its promise for applications in demanding electrified environments.

The seventh blind test of crystal structure prediction: structure generation methods

A seventh blind test of crystal structure prediction was organized by the Cambridge Crystallographic Data Centre featuring seven target systems of varying complexity: a silicon and iodine-containing molecule, a copper coordination complex, a near-rigid molecule, a cocrystal, a polymorphic small agrochemical, a highly flexible polymorphic drug candidate, and a polymorphic morpholine salt. In this first of two parts focusing on structure generation methods, many crystal structure prediction (CSP) methods performed well for the small but flexible agrochemical compound, successfully reproducing the experimentally observed crystal structures, while few groups were successful for the systems of higher complexity. A powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) assisted exercise demonstrated the use of CSP in successfully determining a crystal structure from a low-quality PXRD pattern. The use of CSP in the prediction of likely cocrystal stoichiometry was also explored, demonstrating multiple possible approaches. Crystallographic disorder emerged as an important theme throughout the test as both a challenge for analysis and a major achievement where two groups blindly predicted the existence of disorder for the first time. Additionally, large-scale comparisons of the sets of predicted crystal structures also showed that some methods yield sets that largely contain the same crystal structures.

Direct ladderization of cyclooctatetraene-containing, processable conjugated ladder polymers from annulated bis-zirconacyclopentadienes

Conjugated ladder polymers (CLPs) are difficult yet captivating synthetic targets due to their fully unsaturated fused backbones. Inherent challenges associated with their synthesis often lead to low yields, structural defects, and insoluble products. Here a new method to form CLPs is demonstrated, utilizing a high-yielding dimerization of annulated zirconacyclopentadienes to form cyclooctatetraene (COT) monomer units. The resulting COT-containing polymers form rapidly in a single ladderization step from the bis-zirconacyclopentadiene precursors and display M n up to 29.7 kg mol -1 . The polymers represent rare examples of CLPs with negatively curved rings, resulting in the observation of unusual properties. The rigid tub-shaped COT units embedded in the backbone imbue the polymers with microporosity, exhibiting BET surface areas up to 555 m 2 g -1 . Additionally, the remarkable solubility of these CLPs in organic solvents enables the fabrication of thin films showcasing high dielectric performance with a discharged energy density as high as 6.54 J cm -3 at 650 MV m -1 .

The seventh blind test of crystal structure prediction: structure ranking methods

A seventh blind test of crystal structure prediction has been organized by the Cambridge Crystallographic Data Centre. The results are presented in two parts, with this second part focusing on methods for ranking crystal structures in order of stability. The exercise involved standardized sets of structures seeded from a range of structure generation methods. Participants from 22 groups applied several periodic DFT-D methods, machine learned potentials, force fields derived from empirical data or quantum chemical calculations, and various combinations of the above. In addition, one non-energy-based scoring function was used. Results showed that periodic DFT-D methods overall agreed with experimental data within expected error margins, while one machine learned model, applying system-specific AIMnet potentials, agreed with experiment in many cases demonstrating promise as an efficient alternative to DFT-based methods. For target XXXII, a consensus was reached across periodic DFT methods, with consistently high predicted energies of experimental forms relative to the global minimum (above 4 kJ mol −1 at both low and ambient temperatures) suggesting a more stable polymorph is likely not yet observed. The calculation of free energies at ambient temperatures offered improvement of predictions only in some cases (for targets XXVII and XXXI). Several avenues for future research have been suggested, highlighting the need for greater efficiency considering the vast amounts of resources utilized in many cases.

Direct ab initio calculation of the 4 He nuclear electric dipole polarizability

The calculation of nuclear electromagnetic sum rules by directly diagonalizing the nuclear Hamiltonian in a large basis is numerically challenging and has not been performed for A>2 nuclei. With the significant progress of high performance computing, we show that calculating sum rules using numerous discretized continuum states obtained by directly diagonalizing the ab initio no-core shell model Hamiltonian is achievable numerically. Specifically, we calculate the 4 He electric dipole (E1) polarizability, that is an inverse energy weighted sum rule, employing the Daejeon16 NN interaction. We demonstrate that the calculations are numerically tractable as the dimension of the basis increases and are convergent. Our results for the 4 He electric dipole polarizability are consistent with the most recent experimental data and are compared with those of other theoretical studies employing different techniques and various interactions.

Multilaminate Energy Storage Films from Entropy‐Driven Self‐Assembled Supramolecular Nanocomposites

Abstract Composite materials comprising polymers and inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) are promising for energy storage applications, though challenges in controlling NP dispersion often result in performance bottlenecks. Realizing nanocomposites with controlled NP locations and distributions within polymer microdomains is highly desirable for improving energy storage capabilities but is a persistent challenge, impeding the in‐depth understanding of the structure–performance relationship. In this study, a facile entropy‐driven self‐assembly approach is employed to fabricate block copolymer‐based supramolecular nanocomposite films with highly ordered lamellar structures, which are then used in electrostatic film capacitors. The oriented interfacial barriers and well‐distributed inorganic NPs within the self‐assembled multilaminate nanocomposites effectively suppress leakage current and mitigate the risk of breakdown, showing superior dielectric strength compared to their disordered counterparts. Consequently, the lamellar nanocomposite films with optimized composition exhibit high energy efficiency (>90% at 650 MV m −1 ), along with remarkable energy density and power density. Moreover, finite element simulations and statistical modeling have provided theoretical insights into the impact of the lamellar structure on electrical conduction, electric field distribution, and electrical tree propagation. This work marks a significant advancement in the design of organic–inorganic hybrids for energy storage, establishing a well‐defined correlation between microstructure and performance.

Interfacial Engineering Using Covalent Organic Frameworks in Polymer Composites for High‐Temperature Electrostatic Energy Storage

Abstract The use of inorganic nanofillers has been an effective method to improve high‐temperature capacitive performance of dielectric polymers, though there are unmet challenges such as undesirable organic–inorganic compatibility, and low efficiencies and energy densities. Herein, a surface functionalization strategy using covalent organic frameworks (COFs) is employed to address such challenges in realizing high‐performing polymer composites. Specifically, core–shell structured nanoparticles, where ZrO 2 nanoparticles act as the core and a COF material forms the shell, are constructed and composited with the polyetherimide (PEI) matrix. The design leverages the high electron affinity ( E A ) of the outer COF shell to create energy traps, thereby capturing free charges and limiting electrical conduction. Concurrently, the low E A and wide bandgap of the ZrO 2 core introduce energy barriers to impede charge injection and migration. This orchestrated “energy level cascade” results in a marked reduction of leakage current and energy loss. The resulting polymer composite showcases an impressive discharged energy density of 6.21 J cm −3 at an efficiency above 90%, with a maximum discharged energy density reaching 7.43 J cm −3 at 150 °C. These performance metrics position the PEI/ZrO 2 @COF polymer composite to surpass or be on par with state‐of‐the‐art high‐temperature PEI composites and other advanced polymer dielectrics.

Functional composites by programming entropy-driven nanosheet growth

Here, nanomaterials must be systematically designed to be technologically viable. Driven by optimizing intermolecular interactions, current designs are too rigid to plug in new chemical functionalities and cannot mitigate condition differences during integration. Despite extensive optimization of building blocks and treatments, accessing nanostructures with the required feature sizes and chemistries is difficult. Programming their growth across the nano-to-macro hierarchy also remains challenging, if not impossible. To address these limitations, we should shift to entropy-driven assemblies to gain design flexibility, as seen in high-entropy alloys, and program nanomaterial growth to kinetically match target feature sizes to the mobility of the system during processing. In tis report, following a micro-then-nano growth sequence in ternary composite blends composed of block-copolymer-based supramolecules, small molecules and nanoparticles, we successfully fabricate high-performance barrier materials composed of more than 200 stacked nanosheets (125 nm sheet thickness) with a defect density less than 0.056 µm -2 and about 98% efficiency in controlling the defect type. Contrary to common perception, polymer-chain entanglements are advantageous to realize long-range order, accelerate the fabrication process (<30 min) and satisfy specific requirements to advance multilayered film technology. This study showcases the feasibility, necessity and unlimited opportunities to transform laboratory nanoscience into nanotechnology through systems engineering of self-assembly.
