Imaging quantum melting in a disordered 2D Wigner solid

Two-dimensional strongly interacting electrons crystalize into a solid phase known as the Wigner crystal at low densities and form a Fermi liquid at high densities. At intermediate densities, the two-dimensional solid evolves into a strongly correlated liquid phase around a critical density. We observed this quantum melting of a disordered Wigner solid in bilayer molybdenum diselenide (MoSe2) using a noninvasive scanning tunneling microscopy imaging technique. At low densities, the Wigner solid forms nanocrystalline domains pinned by local disorder. It exhibits a quantum densification behavior with increased densities in the solid phase. Above a threshold density, the Wigner solid melts locally and enters a mixed phase in which solid and liquid regions coexist. The liquid regions expand and form a percolation network at even higher densities.

Mapping charge excitations in generalized Wigner crystals

Transition metal dichalcogenide-based moiré superlattices exhibit strong electron-electron correlations, thus giving rise to strongly correlated quantum phenomena such as generalized Wigner crystal states. Evidence of Wigner crystals in transition metal dichalcogenide moire superlattices has been widely reported from various optical spectroscopy and electrical conductivity measurements, while their microscopic nature has been limited to the basic lattice structure. Theoretical studies predict that unusual quasiparticle excitations across the correlated gap between upper and lower Hubbard bands can arise due to long-range Coulomb interactions in generalized Wigner crystal states. However, the microscopic proof of such quasiparticle excitations is challenging because of the low excitation energy of the Wigner crystal. Here, in this study, we describe a scanning single-electron charging spectroscopy technique with nanometre spatial resolution and single-electron charge resolution that enables us to directly image electron and hole wavefunctions and to determine the thermodynamic gap of generalized Wigner crystal states in twisted WS 2 moiré heterostructures. High-resolution scanning single-electron charging spectroscopy combines scanning tunnelling microscopy with a monolayer graphene sensing layer, thus enabling the generation of individual electron and hole quasiparticles in generalized Wigner crystals. We show that electron and hole quasiparticles have complementary wavefunction distributions and that thermodynamic gaps of ~50 meV exist for the 1/3 and 2/3 generalized Wigner crystal states in twisted WS 2 .

Imaging moiré excited states with photocurrent tunnelling microscopy

Moiré superlattices provide a highly tuneable and versatile platform to explore novel quantum phases and exotic excited states ranging from correlated insulators to moiré excitons. Scanning tunnelling microscopy has played a key role in probing microscopic behaviours of the moiré correlated ground states at the atomic scale. However, imaging of quantum excited states in moiré heterostructures remains an outstanding challenge. In this report we develop a photocurrent tunnelling microscopy technique that combines laser excitation and scanning tunnelling spectroscopy to directly visualize the electron and hole distribution within the photoexcited moiré exciton in twisted bilayer WS 2 . The tunnelling photocurrent alternates between positive and negative polarities at different locations within a single moiré unit cell. This alternating photocurrent originates from the in-plane charge transfer moiré exciton in twisted bilayer WS 2 , predicted by our GW-Bethe–Salpeter equation calculations, that emerges from the competition between the electron–hole Coulomb interaction and the moiré potential landscape. Our technique enables the exploration of photoexcited non-equilibrium moiré phenomena at the atomic scale.

Magnetic Field-Stabilized Wigner Crystal States in a Graphene Moiré Superlattice

ABC-stacked trilayer graphene on boron nitride (ABC-TLG/hBN) moiré superlattices provides a tunable platform for exploring Wigner crystal states in which the electron correlation can be controlled by electric and magnetic fields. Here, in this work, we report the observation of magnetic field-stabilized Wigner crystal states in a ABC-TLG/hBN. We show that correlated insulating states emerge at multiple fractional and integer fillings corresponding to ν = 1/3, 2/3, 1, 4/3, 5/3, and 2 electrons per moiré lattice site under a magnetic field. These correlated insulating states can be attributed to generalized Mott states for the integer fillings and generalized Wigner crystal states for the fractional fillings. The generalized Wigner crystal states are stabilized by a vertical magnetic field and are strongest at one magnetic flux quantum per three moiré superlattices. The ν = 2 insulating state persists up to 30 T, which can be described by a Mott–Hofstadter transition at a high magnetic field.

Spectroscopy signatures of electron correlations in a trilayer graphene/hBN moiré superlattice

ABC-stacked trilayer graphene/hexagonal boron nitride moiré superlattice (TLG/hBN) has emerged as a playground for correlated electron physics. Here, we report spectroscopy measurements of dual-gated TLG/hBN using Fourier transform infrared photocurrent spectroscopy. We observed a strong optical transition between moiré minibands that narrows continuously as a bandgap is opened by gating, indicating a reduction of the single-particle bandwidth. At half-filling of the valence flat band, a broad absorption peak emerges at ~18 milli–electron volts, indicating direct optical excitation across an emerging Mott gap. Similar photocurrent spectra are observed in two other correlated insulating states at quarter- and half-filling of the first conduction band. Our findings provide key parameters of the Hubbard model for the understanding of electron correlation in TLG/hBN.

Tunable Orbital Ferromagnetism at Noninteger Filling of a Moiré Superlattice

Here, the flat bands resulting from moiré superlattices exhibit fascinating correlated electron phenomena such as correlated insulators, ( Nature 2018, 556 (7699), 80–84), ( Nature Physics 2019, 15 (3), 237) superconductivity, ( Nature 2018, 556 (7699), 43–50), ( Nature 2019, 572 (7768), 215–219) and orbital magnetism. ( Science 2019, 365 (6453), 605–608), ( Nature 2020, 579 (7797), 56–61), ( Science 2020, 367 (6480), 900–903) Such magnetism has been observed only at particular integer multiples of n 0 , the density corresponding to one electron per moiré superlattice unit cell. Here, we report the experimental observation of ferromagnetism at noninteger filling (NIF) of a flat Chern band in a ABC-TLG/hBN moiré superlattice. This state exhibits prominent ferromagnetic hysteresis behavior with large anomalous Hall resistivity in a broad region of densities centered in the valence miniband at n = -2.3n 0 . We observe that, not only the magnitude of the anomalous Hall signal, but also the sign of the hysteretic ferromagnetic response can be modulated by tuning the carrier density and displacement field. Rotating the sample in a fixed magnetic field demonstrates that the ferromagnetism is highly anisotropic and likely purely orbital in character.

Imaging two-dimensional generalized Wigner crystals

The Wigner crystal has fascinated condensed matter physicists for nearly 90 years. Signatures of two-dimensional (2D) Wigner crystals were first observed in 2D electron gases under high magnetic field, and recently reported in transition metal dichalcogenide moiré superlattices. Direct observation of the 2D Wigner crystal lattice in real space, however, has remained an outstanding challenge. Conventional scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) has sufficient spatial resolution but induces perturbations that can potentially alter this fragile state. Here we demonstrate real-space imaging of 2D Wigner crystals in WSe 2 /WS 2 moiré heterostructures using a specially designed non-invasive STM spectroscopy technique. This employs a graphene sensing layer held close to the WSe 2 /WS 2 moiré superlattice. Local STM tunnel current into the graphene layer is modulated by the underlying Wigner crystal electron lattice in the WSe 2 /WS 2 heterostructure. Different Wigner crystal lattice configurations at fractional electron fillings of n = 1/3, 1/2 and 2/3, where n is the electron number per site, are directly visualized. The n = 1/3 and n = 2/3 Wigner crystals exhibit triangular and honeycomb lattices, respectively, to minimize nearest-neighbour occupations. The n = 1/2 state spontaneously breaks the original C3 symmetry and forms a stripe phase. Here our study lays a solid foundation for understanding Wigner crystal states in WSe 2 /WS 2 moiré heterostructures and provides an approach that is generally applicable for imaging novel correlated electron lattices in other systems.

Imaging local discharge cascades for correlated electrons in WS 2 /WSe 2 moiré superlattices

Transition metal dichalcogenide moiré heterostructures provide an ideal platform to explore the extended Hubbard model, where long-range Coulomb interactions play a critical role in determining strongly correlated electron states. This has led to experimental observations of Mott insulator states at half filling as well as a variety of extended Wigner crystal states at different fractional fillings. However, a microscopic understanding of these emerging quantum phases is still lacking. Here we describe a scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) technique for the local sensing and manipulation of correlated electrons in a gated WS 2 /WSe 2 moiré superlattice, which enables the experimental extraction of fundamental extended Hubbard model parameters. We demonstrate that the charge state of the local moiré sites can be imaged by their influence on the STM tunnelling current. In addition to imaging, we are also able to manipulate the charge state of correlated electrons. When we ramp the bias on the STM tip, there is a local discharge cascade of correlated electrons in the moiré superlattice, which allows us to estimate the nearest-neighbour Coulomb interaction. Two-dimensional mapping of the moiré electron charge states also enables us to determine the on-site energy fluctuations at different moiré sites. Furthermore, our technique should be broadly applicable to many semiconductor moiré systems, offering a powerful tool for the microscopic characterization and control of strongly correlated states in moiré superlattices.

Imaging moiré flat bands in three-dimensional reconstructed WSe 2 /WS 2 superlattices

Moiré superlattices in transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) heterostructures can host novel correlated quantum phenomena due to the interplay of narrow moiré flat bands and strong, long-range Coulomb interactions. However, microscopic knowledge of the atomically reconstructed moiré superlattice and resulting flat bands is still lacking, which is critical for fundamental understanding and control of the correlated moiré phenomena. Here we quantitatively study the moiré flat bands in three-dimensional (3D) reconstructed WSe 2 /WS 2 moiré superlattices by comparing scanning tunnelling spectroscopy (STS) of high-quality exfoliated TMD heterostructure devices with ab initio simulations of TMD moiré superlattices. A strong 3D buckling reconstruction accompanied by large in-plane strain redistribution is identified in our WSe 2 /WS 2 moiré heterostructures. STS imaging demonstrates that this results in a remarkably narrow and highly localized K-point moiré flat band at the valence band edge of the heterostructure. A series of moiré flat bands are observed at different energies that exhibit varying degrees of localization. Our observations contradict previous simplified theoretical models but agree quantitatively with ab initio simulations that fully capture the 3D structural reconstruction. Furthermore, our results reveal that the strain redistribution and 3D buckling in TMD heterostructures dominate the effective moiré potential and the corresponding moiré flat bands at the Brillouin zone K points.

Tunable correlated Chern insulator and ferromagnetism in a moiré superlattice

Studies of two-dimensional electron systems in a strong magnetic field revealed the quantum Hall effect, a topological state of matter featuring a finite Chern number C and chiral edge states. Haldane later theorized that Chern insulators with integer quantum Hall effects could appear in lattice models with complex hopping parameters even at zero magnetic field. The ABC-trilayer graphene/hexagonal boron nitride (ABC-TLG/hBN) moiré superlattice provides an attractive platform with which to explore Chern insulators because it features nearly flat moiré minibands with a valley-dependent, electrically tunable Chern number. In this work, we report the experimental observation of a correlated Chern insulator in an ABC-TLG/hBN moiré superlattice. We show that reversing the direction of the applied vertical electric field switches the moiré minibands of ABC-TLG/hBN between zero and finite Chern numbers, as revealed by large changes in magneto-transport behaviour. For topological hole minibands tuned to have a finite Chern number, we focus on quarter filling, corresponding to one hole per moiré unit cell. The Hall resistance is well quantized at h/2e 2 (where h is Planck’s constant and e is the charge on the electron), which implies C = 2, for a magnetic field exceeding 0.4 tesla. The correlated Chern insulator is ferromagnetic, exhibiting substantial magnetic hysteresis and a large anomalous Hall signal at zero magnetic field. Finally, our discovery of a C = 2 Chern insulator at zero magnetic field should open up opportunities for discovering correlated topological states, possibly with topological excitations, in nearly flat and topologically nontrivial moiré minibands.

Visualization of the flat electronic band in twisted bilayer graphene near the magic angle twist

Bilayer graphene was theorized to host a moire miniband with flat dispersion if the layers are stacked at specific twist angles known as the magic angles. Recently, such twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG) with the first magic angle twist was reported to exhibit correlated insulating state and superconductivity, where the presence of the flat miniband in the system is thought to be essential for the emergence of these ordered phases in the transport measurements. Tunneling spectroscopy and electronic compressibility measurements in tBLG have revealed a van Hove singularity that is consistent with the presence of the flat miniband. However, a direct observation of the flat dispersion in the momentum-space of such moire miniband in tBLG is still elusive. Here, we report the visualization of the flat moire miniband by using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with nanoscale resolution (nanoARPES). The high spatial resolution in nanoARPES enabled the measurement of the local electronic structure of the tBLG. We clearly demonstrate the existence of the flat moire band near the charge neutrality for tBLG close to the magic angle at room temperature.
