Dispersed Nickel Phthalocyanine Molecules on Carbon Nanotubes as Cathode Catalysts for Li-CO 2 Batteries

The Li-CO 2 battery has great potential for both CO 2 utilization and energy storage, but its practical application is limited by low energy efficiency and short cycle life. Efficient cathode catalysts are needed to address this issue. Herein, this work reports on molecularly dispersed electrocatalysts (MDEs) of nickel phthalocyanine (NiPc) anchored on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as the cathode catalyst for Li-CO 2 batteries. The dispersed NiPc molecules efficiently catalyze CO 2 reduction, while the conductive and porous CNTs networks facilitate CO 2 evolution reaction, leading to enhanced discharging and charging performance compared to the NiPc and CNTs mixture. Octa-cyano substitution on NiPc (NiPc-CN) further enhances the interaction between the molecule and CNTs, resulting in better cycling stability. The Li-CO 2 battery with the NiPc-CN MDE cathode shows a high discharge voltage of 2.72 V and a small discharging–charging potential gap of 1.4 V, and can work stably for over 120 cycles. The reversibility of the cathode is confirmed by experimental characterizations. Finally, this work lays a foundation for the development of molecular catalysts for Li-CO 2 battery cathodes.

Searching water megamasers by using mid-infrared spectroscopy (I): Possible mid-infrared indicators

ABSTRACT Water megamasers at 22 GHz with a gas disc configuration in galaxies provide the most precise measurements of supermassive black hole masses, as well as independent constraints on the Hubble constant in the nearby universe. The existence of other maser types, such as jet or outflow masers, represents another tracer for AGN science. However, the detection rate of water megamasers in galaxies is extremely low. Over 40 yr, only ∼ 160 galaxies are found to harbour maser emission, and ∼30 per cent of them show features in their maser emission that indicate a disc-like geometry. Therefore, increasing the detection rate of masers is a crucial task to allow expanding on maser studies. We present a comparison of mid-infrared spectroscopic data between a maser galaxy sample and a Seyfert 2 control sample. We find that maser galaxies show significant peculiarities in their mid-infrared spectra: (1) Maser galaxies tend to present stronger silicate absorption at τ9.7 $\mu\mathrm{ m}$ than the control sample, (2) PAH 11.3 $\mu$m emission in maser galaxies is much weaker than in the control sample, (3) spectral indices at 20–30 $\mu$m are steeper in maser galaxies than in the control sample and tend to be mid-infrared enhanced population. We conclude that there may be good indicators in mid-infrared and far-infrared which could differentiate maser and non-maser Seyfert 2 galaxies. Upcoming infrared facilities, such as the James Webb Space Telescope, may be able to exploit these and other useful criteria and tracers for water megamaser observations.

In Situ Synchrotron X-ray Diffraction Investigations of the Nonlinear Deformation Behavior of a Low Modulus β -Type Ti36Nb5Zr Alloy

The low modulus β-type Ti alloys usually have peculiar deformation behaviors due to their low phase stability. However, the study of the underlying mechanisms is challenging since some physical mechanisms are fully reversible after the release of the load. In this paper, the deformation behavior of a low modulus β-type Ti36Nb5Zr alloy was investigated with the aid of in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction (SXRD) during tensile loading. The evolution of lattice strains and relative integrated diffraction peak intensities of both the β and α” phases were analyzed to determine the characteristics of the potential deformation mechanisms. Upon loading, the α” diffraction spots appeared at specific azimuth angles of the two-dimensional SXRD patterns due to the <110> fiber texture of original β grains and the selection of favorable martensitic variants. The nonlinear deformation behavior originated from a reversible stress-induced martensitic transformation (SIMT). However, the SIMT contributed a little to the large recoverable strain of over 2.0%, which was dominated by the elastic deformation of the β phase. Various deformation mechanisms were activated successively at different applied strains, including elastic deformation, SIMT and plastic deformation. Our investigations provide in-depth understandings of the deformation mechanisms in β-type Ti alloys with low elastic modulus.

Application of laser-driven capacitor-coil to target normal sheath acceleration

A laser-driven accelerator generates protons with tens of MeV in energy by a compact, strong, and transient accelerating electric field produced as a result of laser–plasma interactions at relativistic intensities. In previous studies, two- and three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations revealed that the application of a kT-level axial magnetic field results in an enhancement of proton acceleration via the target normal sheath acceleration mechanism due to reduced lateral electron divergence and improved electron heating efficiency. An experimental investigation of this scheme on the GEKKO-XII and the LFEX facilities found that the number and maximum energy of the accelerated protons decreased with increasing the temporal delay between the pulse driving the external magnetic-field and the pulse accelerating the protons, contrary to the theoretical and numerical expectations. Finally, we identify sources responsible for the degradation of the proton beam performance and we propose an alternative experimental setup to mitigate the degradation in future experiments.
