Model Formulations: Integrating Distributed Energy Resources (DER) using Advanced Unit Commitment Models and DER Aggregation Methodologies

A distribution energy resource aggregator (DERA) constitutes a group of distribution energy resources with small generation capacities which meet the threshold to participate in the electricity wholesale market. This document provides the proposed DERA model formulation that will be implemented in the SCUC simulation’s architecture for the SCUC-DER project. Different economical assessment methodologies have been developed to incorporated bids for individual distributed resources, which include solar cost dispatch and cost model, BESS opportunity cost offer algorithm, and price sensitive demand response model. Detailed methods are proposed to aggregate individual cost offers to a DERA cost curve to bid in SCUC market while three methods are proposed to simulate DER actual dispatch. Based on the DERA models in this document, the SCUC-DER project will be able to assess the impacts of DERA on the distribution system’s operation and reliability.

Wholesale Electricity Analysis via Simulation & Learning Experiments (WEASLE): Platform Development and Pilot Competition

This document reports the development of the Wholesale Electricity Analysis via Simulation and Learning Experiments (WEASLE) platform and the pilot competition that was conducted to test the platform. Due to the increasing reliance on variable renewable energy resources for bulk power, the pilot competition, called the Energy Storage Participation Algorithm Competition (ESPA-Comp), was used to test the effect of various market designs on storage utilization and market efficiency. Basic details of the platform are provided, including an overview of the market clearing engine, the battery dispatch and degradation models, electric grid topology and resource mix, and software architecture. Two market designs were tested: a two-settlement market analogous to typical ISO design today, and a multi-settlement market that allows additional forward-trading periods during the real-time market. Results from the pilot competition show that the storage bidding problem is nontrivial and is well suited for future challenges. We find that: 1) all four teams utilized different approaches to the bidding problem, 2) different methodological approaches led to substantially different offer behaviors, 3) resource profits are clustered by team and methodological approach, 4) simulated offers reduced market surplus by about 0.5%, 5) substantially different prices between two-settlement and multi-settlement markets albeit minimal difference in overall market surplus.

Engineering Active Surface Oxygen Sites of Cubic Perovskite Cobalt Oxides toward Catalytic Oxidation Reactions

Unraveling the role of surface oxygen sites in transition metal oxides during catalytic reactions has always been the focus of environmental and energy chemistry research. For this work, active surface oxygen sites of cubic perovskite cobalt oxide were engineered to comprehend their crucial role and catalytic mechanism at the molecular level. By removing those inert Sr/La–O termination layers, active oxygen sites were exposed on the Co terminated surface of Sr 0.6 La 0.4 CoO 3–δ that furnished the dominant catalytic process of CO oxidation via the Mars–van Krevelen (MvK) mechanism. The fabrication of five-coordinate cobalt ions and the enhanced covalency of Co–O bonds not only optimize the surface electronic structure of Co 3d–O 2p, but also supply active surface oxygen sites, which effectively oxidizes CO to CO 2 with a significantly improved oxidation performance and stability as evidenced by soft/hard XAS, XPS, and O 2 -TPD. Furthermore, online isotopic 18 O 2 mass spectrometry, in situ DRIFTS, and theoretical simulation demonstrate that the activity of surface oxygen sites enhances the kinetics of the MvK reaction, while unsaturated coordination sites from five-coordinate cobalt ions primarily contribute to the activated oxygen molecules and the stable catalytic cycle. The results reported here provide a deep insight into the comprehension of the relationships among active oxygen sites, surface electronic structure, and the reaction mechanism of transition metal oxides necessary for catalytic oxidation reactions.

Atomic-Scale Insights into Surface Lattice Oxygen Activation at the Spinel/Perovskite interface of Co 3 O 4 /La 0.3 Sr 0.7 CoO 3

Surface lattice oxygen in transition-metal oxides plays a vital role in catalytic processes. Mastering activation of surface lattice oxygen and identifying the activation mechanism are crucial for the development and design of advanced catalysts. A strategy is now developed to create a spinel Co 3 O 4 /perovskite La 0.3 Sr 0.7 CoO 3 interface by in situ reconstruction of the surface Sr enrichment region in perovskite LSC to activate surface lattice oxygen. XAS and XPS confirm that the regulated chemical interface optimizes the hybridized orbital between Co 3d and O 2p and triggers more electrons in oxygen site of LSC transferred into lattice of Co 3 O 4 , leading to more inactive O 2- transformed into active O 2-x . Furthermore, the activated Co 3 O 4 /LSC exhibits the best catalytic activities for CO oxidation, oxygen evolution, and oxygen reduction. This work would provide a fundamental understanding to explain the activation mechanism of surface oxygen sites.
