The primary mechanism of optical memoristive devices relies on phase transitions between amorphous and crystalline states. The slow or energy-hungry amorphous–crystalline transitions in optical phase-change materials are detrimental to the scalability and performance of devices. Leveraging an integrated photonic platform, nonvolatile and reversible switching between two layered structures of indium selenide (In 2 Se 3 ) triggered by a single nanosecond pulse is demonstrated. The high-resolution pair distribution function reveals the detailed atomistic transition pathways between the layered structures. With interlayer “shear glide” and isosymmetric phase transition, switching between the α- and β-structural states contains low re-configurational entropy, allowing reversible switching between layered structures. Broadband refractive index contrast, optical transparency, and volumetric effect in the crystalline–crystalline phase transition are experimentally characterized in molecular-beam-epitaxy-grown thin films and compared to ab initio calculations. Finally, the nonlinear resonator transmission spectra measure of incremental linear loss rate of 3.3 GHz, introduced by a 1.5 µm-long In 2 Se 3 -covered layer, resulted from the combinations of material absorption and scattering.
The nano-structural evolution of the inner product of ground granulated blast furnace slag in blended cement at 7, 14, 28 56 and 180d was revealed. Three distinct layered inner hydration product region were observed because of the spatial zonation of hydrotalcite-like phase, C-A-S-H gel and Ca-Al LDH phase. The zonation of inner hydration product explains the presence of the multi-rims features of the slag grains with a relatively high reaction degree at very late ages. Diffusion of dissolved ion from slag grains and the effect of pore space on the reorganization of hydration products play a key role in forming the spatial zonation of inner hydration product. The findings of the zonation of inner region argue that the lack of pore space in the inner region makes the continued dissolution of slag hard to complete.
High-efficiency self-healing cementitious materials using hydroxyapatites as healing product were described. Supramolecular hydrogels impregnated with phosphate and ammonium ions were designed. Morphology of the supramolecular hydrogel and its capability to release phosphate in solution, the structure of healing products and the self-healing efficiency were characterized with a range of analytical techniques. Cracks in the cementitious materials with width up to 1 mm are closed and completely healed. The healing product in the cracks without ammonium ions was brushite with a sponge-like morphology. Released ammonium ions reacted with calcium hydroxide in the cement matrix, increasing the concentration of soluble calcium ions up to 300 times that in reference pore solution. Ammonium ions facilitated the formation and aggregation of healing products which were converted into hydroxyapatites, improving the maximum healable crack width.
The early age hydration of ordinary Portland cement in 5 M borate solution, with or without the addition of NaAlO{sub 2} and/or NaOH, was investigated. Hydration was measured using calorimetry, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, {sup 11}B and {sup 27}Al magic angle spinning NMR analysis, and scanning transmission electron microscopy. The purpose of this study was to reveal the mechanisms behind the retardation caused by a high concentration borate solution and the restoration of hydration through the combined addition of NaOH and NaAlO{sub 2}. Amorphous ulexite, which formed on the surface of the cement particles and prevented the further dissolution of anhydrous phases, was identified as the retardation product. The mechanism of the combined addition of NaAlO{sub 2} and NaOH in overcoming retardation was to transform amorphous ulexite into B-AFt and gowerite (CaB{sub 6}O{sub 10}·5H{sub 2}O). Formation of gowerite is favorable because of the much higher boron immobilization capacity in weight percentage, comparing to usual boron-containing phases reported previously.
