Programmable bionanocomposite coated fertilizers for prolonged controlled release of nitrogen

Controlled-release fertilizers (CRFs) present a promising solution for alleviating food and nutrient scarcity. However, their development has been mainly hindered by both rapid and unsynchronized nutrient release and unsustainable coating materials. In this study, we address this issue by developing a new coating layer for CRFs using a programmable biopolyurethane nanocomposite. This nanocomposite is prepared from diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI)-functionalized bentonite nanoclay (BNT-MDI) and a biopolyol from biomass waste. The results show that the BNT-MDI-doped CRFs (BCRFs) exhibit an impressive nitrogen (N)-release longevity of approximately 120 days at a 4 wt% coating ratio, surpassing previous CRF formulations. In a 30-day snap bean cultivation study, BCRF significantly improved root length (1000%), leaf length (257%), leaf width (400%), and plant height (1400%) compared to the control. The superior performance of BCRF is attributed to the PU-nanoclay biocomposite film, with full nano-exfoliation, controllable porosity, and high crosslinking density. Furthermore, we introduce a new dynamic release mechanism and establish a quantitative relationship between the nanostructure, property, and release performance of BCRF by combining the multiplicative and diffusion models for porous materials. Finally, this study provides a theoretical framework and a straightforward methodology for designing programmable nanocomposite structures for future biobased CRFs.

Scalable Synthesis of 2D Mo 2 C and Thickness‐Dependent Hydrogen Evolution on Its Basal Plane and Edges

Abstract 2D transition metal carbides (2D TMCs and MXenes) are promising candidates for applications of energy storage and catalysis. However, producing high‐quality, large 2D flakes of Mo2C MXene has been challenging. Here, a new salt‐assisted templating approach is reported that enables the direct synthesis of 2D Mo 2 C with low defect concentrations. KCl acts as a template to form an intermediate 2D product, facilitating Mo 2 C formation without coarsening upon melting. The thickness of the flakes produced can range from monolayer (0.36 nm) to 10 layers (4.55 nm), and the electrocatalytical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity of 2D Mo 2 C is inversely proportional to its thickness. The monolayer Mo 2 C shows remarkable HER performance with a current density of ≈6800 mA cm − 2 at 470 mV versus reversible hydrogen electrode and an ultrahigh turnover frequency of ≈17 500 s − 1 . This salt‐assisted synthesis approach can also produce WC and V 8 C 7 nanosheets, expanding the family of 2D carbides. The new pathway eliminates the need for layered ceramic precursors, making it a versatile approach to direct synthesis of MXene‐like 2D carbides.

Effect of Low Frequency Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) Combined with Hyperbaric Oxygen (HBO) on Awakening of Coma Patients with Traumatic Brain Injury

Coma caused by craniocerebral injury is a common condition of neurosurgical acute injury. There is no specific method to promote awakening in a clinic. Early comprehensive treatment may be helpful to patients. The common methods are hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) and low-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS). However, the application effect and mechanism of rTMS combined with HBO on coma patients with traumatic brain injury need to be further studied. The brain stem auditory evoked potential (BAEP) is examined by the Kennedy coma recovery scale (CRS-R), the recovery of brain function and the state of consciousness are evaluated, and the therapeutic effect is evaluated by the Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS). Cerebrospinal fluid NE level, MCA blood flow velocity, and left brainstem and right brainstem auditory evoked potential are used to evaluate brain rehabilitation. RTMS combined with HBO could shorten the wake-up time, improve the wake-up rate, improve the GCS score and CRS-R score, shorten the brain wave latency time of the left and right brainstem, increase the NE level of cerebrospinal fluid, and decrease the blood flow velocity of MCA. RTMS combines with HBO can improve the nerve excitability of brain cells, reduce the disturbance of consciousness, promote the functional recovery of brain injury, and has a certain role in promoting the awakening of patients with traumatic brain injury coma.

Compositional patterning in irradiated alloys: Effective potentials and effective interfacial energy

Compositional patterning (CP) in binary alloys during energetic particle irradiation is studied using a kinetic model that considers two competing kinetic processes, a thermally activated one promoting macroscopic phase separation (MPS) of the concentration field c(r,t) and a forced one resulting in finite-range random atomic mixing. The forced mixing is modeled by a Gaussian relocation distribution with a characteristic distance R. A series of approximate kinetic models are introduced by expanding the mixing function into a series of n terms, thus replacing the non-local evaluations of the concentration field c(r'-r,t) by local derivatives of c(r,t). This approach makes it possible to obtain exact effective potentials and build steady-state diagrams for each order-n model. Phase field (PF) simulations using these order-n models reveal that near the onset of patterning, phase evolution is accurately described using an order-3 model, which changes smoothly from an extended Cahn-Hilliard free energy in the MPS regime to a one-mode Swift-Hohenberg functional in the CP regime. Deeper into the patterning regime, higher-order models are required to achieve convergence, yielding square-like concentration profiles characteristic of a strong segregation regime. These higher-order effective free energies are analogous to multimodal Swift-Hohenberg functionals. Here, a new definition for the effective interfacial energy is proposed in the CP regime, since the interfacial area is no longer an excess quantity in that regime, precluding the use of the standard thermodynamic definition of interfacial energy.
